According to a media report, the number of electric vehicle charging stations in the USA might soon overtake the number of fuel stations. As per a study, this change is expected to happen within the next eight years.



The study found that "charging deserts" - an area with few to no charging stations are fast disappearing. Various networks across the USA have reportedly added up to 704 new EV charging stations during the early half of 2024, bringing the current total to almost 9,000 fast-charging sites. This means that EV chargers now have a stronger growth rate than fuel stations.

Also, the study states that the spending on EV charging stations is expected to surpass $6 billion by the end of 2024. This amount though, is projected to double by 2030, thanks to strong consumer demand.

Apart from the regular networks, private businesses have also invested in the industry, with banks and other companies also installing chargers at various locations. The increase in EV chargers should, in turn, spur new vehicle developments in the market.

This is something to ponder about. Looks like EV charging stations need lots of space, unlike a petrol fuel station. That is, a fuel station on a 100 ft x 100 ft property might be able to fuel 500 vehicles (number taken out of my hat) a day.

Below is my calculation, the answer is 210ft×100ft to service 500cars, with 36 stations, each car arriving 1min 15 secs apart.

Unlike ICE cars, EVs can also be charged at home, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, IKEA etc. If there is a need to service 500 ICE cars, the need will reduce to probably 100 EVs.

My observation is, 100ft × 100ft petrol station are usually small stations which usually don't serve trucks, some CoCo stations use 500ft× 200ft. Such CoCo stations on the highways can easily serve 3-4 cars per min.


You can fit more than 14 stations if it is smartly designed.

That is the beauty of it. Charging doesn't need dedicated space like a petrol station. It can be setup in any parking lot. There are newer chargers which have a very sleek form factor. Recently Glida installed chargers in DLF Cyberpark, Gurugram. It is 200 KW charger with 6 satellite guns. Details in the article on this link

Today there is a need of dedicated EV charging spots because EV cars are lesser in number.

India also needs a massive number of EV chargers to fuel the growth of the EV sector, if we had charging stations at every petrol bunk, I am sure we would see a whole lot more EVs selling, faster charging and better battery tech also need to be implemented along with more charging stations so that EVs can become the go-to option for new car buyers.
