MG Motor India to launch 5 new models by end-2025

According to Rajeev Chaba, President & Managing Director of MG Motor India, five new models have been approved for the Indian market, which will be launched by the end of 2025.

Without going into the specifics, Chaba said that the first among the five new models planned is a crossover. It will be launched around September-October 2024 and will be positioned in the Rs 10-20 lakh segment. We expect this to be the Cloud EV that has already been spotted testing in India.

The second model is likely to be the Bingo hatchback. The carmaker has already filed a patent for the small electric hatchback in India. It shares its underpinnings with the MG Comet EV.

According to media reports, MG is also planning to launch a new D-segment SUV in India. It could be based on the Wuling Starlight S and will be positioned alongside the Gloster. It might be offered with plug-in hybrid and pure electric powertrains.

It is said that MG plans to introduce two premium offerings as well. While the exact details are unknown, it's been speculated that the carmaker might bring the MG Cyberster electric sports car and the R7 SUV coupe to India.

I really hope the hybrid Astor is one of them. We need more hybrids or even PHEVs on Indian soil. They make so much more sense over a BEV

Plugin hybrids are a bad idea. This post sums up my opinion and that of many EV folks very well.
Plug-in Hybrids for India?

Strong hybrids (Toyota Innova HyCross, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder) are superior to PHEVs.

Quote:
A PHEV will cut your running costs, compared to a traditional combustion engine, if you regularly drive in town within the battery's range.
This means you need to keep it charged, otherwise the combustion engine will kick in - and not only will it have to power your car, but it's also having to carry the weight of a heavy hybrid system.
If you can easily keep it charged, consider an electric car as it will likely be cheaper and cleaner to run overall.
Plug-in hybrid cars use more fuel than official figures claim

Re: MG Motor India to launch 5 new models by end-2025

Almost every vehicle uses more fuel than official figures, similar to ARAI mileage in India and that is nothing new.

The test quoted above specifically states that PHEVs are more efficient than hybrids when there is access to regular charging, which is exactly how it is meant to be used. It looks worse only if you don't make use of the ev mode properly, thus defeating the whole purpose of the system.

Sure if you are using the car only for city drives then a BEV is better and for only long routes a strong hybrid is better. But the PHEV fills that middle ground for those who don't need more than 50km for 90% of the time, yet still require occasional long drives without the complexities and range anxiety that a BEV brings.

It doesn't have to be seen a better or worse solution, but just another powertrain option that expands our choices.

Why not two cars ? A small BEV for city and a ICE for Highway. One can argue that may be there is only space for a single car. So now we are talking about a family that has enough money to buy one a big expensive car, has dedicated parking (with a plug mind you) for that big car but not for an additional small car. Look at how limited that market is.

I am not a big fan of hybrids, smart/unsmart/strong/weak/plug in/plug out you name it. Plug in hybrids would be the worst of the lot. They are expensive, complicated, inefficient and most importantly horrible from the emission stand point. No wonder there are no plugin hybrids in India. It will not work out.

It's great that MG is bringing in PHEVs. India needs them more. Simplicity of an ICE with added bonus of electric motor for those daily city rides. Brilliant.

We need Hyundai/ Kia and others to get there PHEVs to India too.

Not everyone needs or have space for two cars. And whatever extra premium a PHEV commands over a regular hybrid will be only a fraction of the cost of buying a second well equipped car.

Regular hybrids themselves have just started to gain foothold in India. Give some time for PHEVs to launch and it could be just the right product for many customers for whom it'll give the best of both worlds.
