Parental controls on Tesla EVs; To get new 'night curfew' & speed control features

According to news reports, Tesla is likely to introduce parental control features on its EVs, as part of its rumoured upcoming software update.

The software update will introduce a feature called 'night curfew', which apparently will send parents a notification via the Tesla mobile app when the EV is driven past the curfew time of their teenagers.

In addition to this, the update will also allow parents to set a maximum speed limit and also reduce acceleration. The 'Chill' feature restricts the EV's horsepower and torque limiting the acceleration. The feature allows parents to set limitations for other drivers. Also, the parental control feature prevents teenagers from disabling the speed limit, collision warnings and automatic emergency braking on their own.

Tesla though is yet to announce when the 'night curfew' and other parental control features will be released.

This is a worthwhile update, as it allows parents to restrict the usage of cars by their children to an extent, and allows for a safer experience, reduce speeding and the like. With the way EVs are made, I wonder why it took this long for such an update.

10 missed calls from Porsche.

On a serious note, it looks like a stricter version of the existing valet mode. Night curfew sounds misleading for a feature that basically notifies you after your kid has sneaked out.

Absolutely, and it makes a lot of sense. Especially the limiting of the acceleration, in something as crazy quick as a Tesla.

I guess that's the beauty of these software updates, something like that could easily be added in -- and most Tesla owners seem extremely happy with the frequency and value that each software update brings.

There might however be some concerns about "locking" a car to only operate during certain times.... for example, headline reads: "19 year old could not take his friend to hospital at 1am due to Tesla's strict Curfew Mode. Friend bleeds to death"

It is a good gesture by Tesla to start thinking in this direction.
Hope the car manufacturers try to make use of the technology to stop/minimise accidents as a result of under-age/irresponsible/drunken driving.
This is what I was wishing on another thread

Looks like automobile culture is shifting from Detroit to California
