USA: Cybertruck claims to have become the best-selling electric pickup for the first time

According to reports, the Tesla Cybertruck has become the best-selling electric pickup in the USA for the first time. The Cybertruck is said to have outsold the popular F-150 Lightning which has been on top of the sales chart ever since its arrival in the market.

As per reports, Tesla registered approximately 443,956 vehicles in Q2 of 2024, of which 21,551 units were from other models like the Model X, Model Y, Semi and Cybertruck. While there is no information regarding the sales numbers of the Cybertruck itself, several official accounts suggest it is the best-selling electric pickup truck in America.

Wes Morrill, Lead Engineer at Tesla also shared a post from Sawyer Merritt, confirming the same. He stated, "Let's go! Best-selling electric pickup is also made in America. And very likely, the most American-made pickup, too." The news was also up on the Cybertruck's official social media page.

Tesla began deliveries of the Cybertruck on November 30, 2023, and later had to recall all of them back in April this year. This recall revealed that, at that time, there were a little under 4,000 examples delivered. The Ford F-150 Lightning takes the second position, having sold 7,902 units.

Clickbait? I don't see the number of cyber trucks sold anywhere in the report.

Unless I am missing something, there appears to be an error in this post; it does not include Model S. The source says the following -

There were also 21,551 other Tesla models sold, with the number including the Model X, Model S, Semi, and Cybertruck.

This caught my eye since I read the other day that Model S/ X sales are crashing. Tesla does this funky thing where it breaks down deliveries into two categories: Model 3/Y and ‘other models’. I am not sure how they get away with this in their earnings calls. Source: Electrek

If you torture the data long enough, it will tell the story you want.

Ford sells about 180K--200K trucks per qtr, out of which barely 5% are Lightning. Sharing this that Lightning were never popular nor the market leader by any length. Further the clientele for these 2 brands is very different. So its wrong at multiple levels to compare the sales of these two.

Tesla EV sales are declining, while market itself for EV's seems to be doing better. I dont really follow EV's, but this is what quick google search seems to point to.

Probably I am over reacting, but its tough to hide how much i dislike this thing. Its quite ugly in person. wonder why would anyone even put their hard earned money in these things.

How do you torture the data as simple as sales numbers? There is no need to resort to conspiracy theories for minor things like this. The NY Times and Register articles are more sensationalist by design to get more clicks.

Coming to Tesla's overall sales, it's a miracle that they are still selling so many vehicles with such a tiny and boring product lineup despite many options from the competition. Cybertruck is Tesla's biggest mistake. It would have been a best seller like Model 3 and Model Y if they had gone with conventional design instead. They also need more models at different segments to garner more sales. Their current lineup is essentially 2 models. They need to stop worrying about aero dynamics and efficiency and build proper SUVs and trucks with slightly bigger batteries.

This in fact is very surprising stats to see cybertruck on the top eating into the F150's pie.
The cybertruck has turned out to become a status symbol and a must have in the garage to flaunt. The utility of this truck has always been questioned.

Tesla is selling the aspirational value it has created rather than their cars.

Absolutely! Posting a similar design without the aspirational value attached and it becomes obvious how ugly that so called truck is!

Cybertruck as the best-selling EV truck may not be that significant as the overall EV market share in the truck segment is minuscule though growing.

But an interesting catch is that Tesla Cybertruck is America’s best-selling vehicle priced over $100,000 across the segments and fuel options.

The Tesla Cybertruck hasn't taken off yet. It was actually outsold by the F-150 Lightning!

And I sincerely hope it remains on the launch pad. Do not want to torture my eye by looking at it.

Current VIN numbers released are in 22000+

NY Times and other EV publishers are not fans of Elon Musk for his political standing. Most of the press is negative and it definitely adds to brainwashing syndrome. Most of the Tesla owners I know, including myself have complaints about fit/finish/NVH/interiors but boring is not one of them. There are Pro's and Con's like any other product in the market and opinions are always subjective.

Coming to Cybertruck, looks like a lot of hate here on the looks! It's a polarized design and people either love it or hate it. What I noticed in my 2 months of ownership is that kids and older people love it! Middle aged people have mixed feelings. I've many old/retired people walk up to me to check it out, sit inside and get a feel of it.

Driving experience is one of the best for such a big vehicle. Btw, I spent my hard earned money on this one, not to flaunt but to experience the next gen technology There are more expensive cars I own but this one gets crazy attention, more than I can handle.
