Tata says EVs will now contribute 30% of total volumes by 2030, not 50% as earlier said

Tata Motors has revised its EV sales target due to the slowing growth in the segment. During a recent event, the company said that EVs will now contribute 30% of total volumes by 2030 and not 50% as forecasted earlier.

Tata Motors estimates the Indian passenger vehicle market will breach the 6-million-unit mark by FY2030. The carmaker is aiming for a market share of 18-20%, which is about 1-1.2 million annual sales. EVs will make up 3-4 lakh units, which is still 4 times higher than the current annual sales of 73,000 units.

Tata Motors’ EV sales have been hovering around 5,500-7,500 units for the last few quarters. The carmaker sold fewer EVs in April and May of FY2025 compared to the previous fiscal. This could be an indication of a slowing market.

On the other hand, CNG vehicle sales are estimated to grow in the years to come. At present, CNG contributes 15% of the total passenger vehicle sales. Tata expects this to reach 25% by the end of this decade.

The share of EVs is also expected to rise from the current 2% to 20%, which is why Tata plans to increase its investment in its EV business. The carmaker plans to invest Rs 16,000-18,000 crore by FY2030.

Currently, Tata Motors’ EV range includes the Tiago.ev, Tigor.ev, Punch.ev and Nexon.ev. The company has also lined up two new models – the Curvv EV and Harrier EV.

The problem with EV adoption and for that matter any new technology that is inherently costly but is being fueled using fiscal driven subsidy, is that the moment subsidies are reduced, consumption decreases rapidly, unless you reach state where there is no viable alternative left. In this case, there is a perfectly viable alternative of ICE cars.

I believe EVs will make a major dent in city cars as they make a lot more sense and charging infrastructure is accessible (read medium powered chargers). The moment you start talking about high battery capacities, you need really fast chargers to make them feasible. That's where the buck stops currently.

Additionally, most Indian cities have affluent population staying in apartments where charging infrastructure setups have not been very easy, owing to government / DISCOM rules. Mostly have slow chargers that won't always suit large capacity EVs.

Nonetheless, Tata has it's game cut out with a formidable EV investment made earlier than most competitors. They will continue to reap first movers advantage for long. Only if they could get their power partners to set up better and reliable charging network.

I'd expect this number to go down even more, as we inch closer to 2030.

A consumer, while buying any vehicle, buys it, keeping every use case in the mind. EVs are good and efficient for city commute, a single use case, that too if the consumer has parking/provision to charge his/her vehicle overnight. Any other deviation from this simple use case makes maintaining an EV, a very big hassle.
Market will realise this sooner or later and EV sales will hit a plateau in the near feature. Infact, this plateauing can already be observed in the global markets.

It's high time our govts and companies realise this, and in order the curb the pollution in our overly congested cities, they should come up with real plans like redistributing the population to tier 2/3 cities by developing them and investing in R&D in ICE/Hybrid, which increases the fuel efficiency and coming out with vehicles, which will last smoothly for 2 decades.

I just don't understand why they give such stupid statements of predicting sales after 6 years rather than taking care of their dwindling sales. The 30% target also seems impossible (2 years down the line they will make it to 20%). Tata Motors doesn't even have adequate number of IC engines for their product lineup.

Just compare them with Mahindra. Mahindra has invested in both the EVs as well as ICE. They have retained the 2.2 litre diesel engine and also made a petrol one from it. Whereas Tata depends on fiat and pays good premium for it. The instability of Management at Tata motors is affecting them in the long run and by the end of this year I'm expecting Mahindra to become the number 2 Car manufacturer of India.

The government should give a level playing field to hybrids also with GST of 18-28% and no registration fees since the EVs will mostly benefit Chinese in long run since they are miles ahead of us and we will be depending on them for batteries and tech.

With the current slowdown of EV sales globally only a cheap battery technology can save this segment.
