Jaguar Land Rover EVs to be based on Chery platforms

Future PHEVs and EVs from Jaguar Land Rover be based on platforms from the Chinese car brand, Chery. The cars will use modular platforms developed by Exeed, which is a subsidiary of Chery.

Yin Tongyao, Chairman of Chery, has said that JLR will adopt the Chinese manufacturer’s platforms for its upcoming plug-in hybrid and electric models. More specifically, JLR will use the Exeed M3X and E0X architectures that underpin models like the Chery Tiggo 9, Luxeed 7, Luxeed R7 and Exeed RX; among others.

The M3X platform supports both ICE and plug-in hybrid powertrains. It also forms the basis for Chery’s ‘Super Hybrid’ powertrain, which features a petrol engine paired with two electric motors.

Chery and Huawei partnered to develop the E0X platform. Designed for EVs, it supports an 800V high-voltage architecture. Models like the Exlantix ES, Exlantix ET, Luxeed S7 and Luxeed R7 are based on this platform.

A loss to the R&D in India strategy.

The maturity of the Chinese market in EV's have helped them in the same add to that the frugal Chinese engineering.

Hopefully JLR takes this as a stepping stone, rather than relying on the development of the cars fully on Chery.

Tata was depending on JLR for their Avinya EV platform and now JLR is depending on Chery for the same. Ergo, Avinya will be based on Chery EV tech?

JLR will resurrect the Freelander name for a new line of electric cars in China

Sold under the Freelander brand, these new models will be seen as "independent from both Chery’s existing portfolio and JLR’s modern luxury House of Brands".

they will be sold exclusively in China initially, JLR says they will be exported globally "over time

We believe that working together to develop new models of collaboration for the world’s largest and fastest-growing electric vehicle market, combined with the appeal of the Freelander brand, promises a very exciting future for CJLR.
Hope this move will revive the dwindling JLR sales in China. Chery is selling their cars in multiple brand names like Jetour, Exceed, Omoda, Jaecoo, Luxeed with Huawei and iCar. Some of these gained little traction in the middle-east with defender resemblance, tech and VFM offered, now stealing volume from Toyota. Chery's export sales in 2023 were close to 1M units.

Off topic, saw a Cherry Tiggo 7 Pro and it looked exactly like MG Hector, not sure what to make of that. Besides this I think Chinese EV makers are gaining ground faster than expected and if this goes on to become successful then they will have a mark of approval from any and everyone.

I might be wrong but this could part two of the announcement by Chery. The Chery platform being used to the Freelander subbrand. I don't see JLR's 5 years of unseen hard work on developing electric Jags to be thrown away for the Chery platform.

China has invested heavily in the entire EV supply chain, they also own significant part of the ICE supply chain too and even if it feels like its coming from elsewhere like Malaysia - Its still a proxy for China

I happened to see one of their (State owns things in the end) MG Maxus branded 7 seater, Its got a declared range of 500+ Kms , 120 KW charging etc and it was very luxurious, an EV version of Toyota Alphard if you will.

In that country it was being sold at our equivalent of a 48-50L INR, its insane. So now imagine why would some company like JLR bother to reinvent the wheel, just simply purchase parts and assemble with a JLR body over it.

There are lot of confusions on the news as they were originated from Chinese websites. The new Freelander news is by autocar UK with confirmation from JLR.

But I guess there are multiple platforms at work, I don't think Chery could deliver the finesse of a Range rover or a Jaguar. Looks like the current news is about a sub brand 'FREELANDER' with Chery platforms. We might see another set of cars under 'Discovery' too as part of their house of brands concept.

The upcoming Rangerover/ Jaguar EVs has no connection with this news I believe.
