Mercedes-Benz electric G-Wagon globally unveiled; 580 BHP & 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds

Mercedes-Benz has taken the wraps off the all-new electric G-wagon.

The new electric G-wagon, officially called 'G580 with EQ Technology', retains the iconic boxy design of its ICE counterparts. The front design gets a gloss black panel with four horizontal vents flanking the three-pointed star at its centre and an LED strip circling the entire panel. Other design elements include a slightly raised hood, air vents on the rear wheel arches, 'EQ' badges, circular LED headlights, LED taillights and a storage box at the rear to carry the charging cables (although a spare tyre is still available as an option) and 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels as standard.

Moving inside, the Mercedes-Benz electric G-wagon comes with the brand's latest MBUX infotainment system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other interior features include temperature-controlled cup holders, wireless charging, keyless entry, Burmester 3D surround-sound system, rear-seat entertainment units and leather upholstery all around; to name a few.

The new Mercedes electric G-class will be available in five colour options: South Sea Blue Magno, Obsidian Black Metallic, Opalite White Magno, Opalite White Bright and Classic Grey Solid. Mercedes will also offer the G580 in AMG Line and Night packages.

Underneath, the Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology retains the ladder-frame chassis with independent suspension and a solid rear axle. Although, Mercedes has reinforced it to support the additional weight. The G580 uses a 116 kWh battery pack, offering 240 miles (386 km) of range. It comes with fast-charging capabilities of up to 200 kW at Level 3 DC charger, allowing 10-80% charge in 30 minutes.

The batteries power four electric motors - 2 in the front & 2 in the rear; making it Mercedes' first production vehicle with individual four-wheel-drive. The four motors produce a total power output of 580 BHP and 1165 Nm, allowing it to sprint from 0-60 mph (0-98 km/h) in 4.4 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h).

The Mercedes electric G-wagon is as capable off-road as its ICE versions. The G580 gets 5 drive modes: Comfort, Sport, Individual, Trail & Rock.

Prices for the new electric G-wagon are yet to be announced.

"Mercedes Benz G580 with EQ Technology" is a mouthful! I prefer a simpler name. What's wrong with EQG?

And thank God it's not a pebble! Sure, it hurts efficiency, but the iconic design more than makes up for it.

This is probably the worst comparison, but I can't help but mention:
Mercedes Benz G580 with EQ Technology - 0-100 kmph in 4.4 seconds @ a couple of crores
Meanwhile,
BYD Seal (with Blade Technology) - 0-100 kmph in 3.8 seconds @ 53 lakhs

I'm scooting before someone throws a chappal at me for the unfair comparison!

Official range of just 386 kms is just too low. Its even lower when you think that the actual real world range would be closer to 300 kms. This is just not good enough

On a lighter note! You all miss the big picture. This is for the Californian (and used to be Moscow) trophy wives who pollute the roads on the school run and shopping trips.

More seriously, Mercedes are investing big time in a charging network in the US like Tesla and it is supposed to be an even better experience.

The concept of an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) is a fad (read annoyance for passionate engineers) in the technology world. No one wants to wait until you get a decent set of features in, before releasing a product. Everyone wants to be out there in the market with the justification that we can't wait forever. While that is true, its equally true that releasing basic beta level stuff to customers in the name of MVP irritates the hell out of passionate engineers and educated customers.

Looks like the automobile world is going down the same path. No manufacturer wants to wait until their EV specific platform is ready or they have a decent battery technology to power it, everyone wants to get out an MVP. I am unable to justify weather this is right or wrong, but I am sure we will see this stop gap arrangement - that isexisting models plonked with electric motors and large battery pack to make it work with average output - continue for the next few years as company evolve their EV platform and technology. With the exception of few folks like the Hyundai twins, most old school car manufacturers were late to board the EV fad and are still a few years away from perfecting their EV strategy, IMHO.

Re: Mercedes-Benz electric G-Wagon globally unveiled; 580 BHP & 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds

I have a lot to say about this. This car might actually be welcome by a lot of people shopping for it:
1. The biggest demography buying this thing- Beverly Hills type wannabes who drive it to the shops to make a statement. (They can add zero-emissions to said statement xD).
2. Off-road enthusiasts with deep pockets. The new G580 in the non- AMG variant is actually pretty practical and well endowed for off-road use. Relatively high profile tyres and an actual spare instead of the charger cable box make it usable. Not to say, the quad-motor setup and the specially engineered undercarriage protector. Finally, a G-wagon you might enjoy trail bashing in.

Having said it, range is definitely a problem and I don't think that can be fixed in the near future. Battery tech needs to accelerate by atleast a decade before we can have a boxy off-roader with acceptable weight and range.

At the end of the day, I'd buy it in the base variant in that gorgeous desert sand paint scheme any day if I had the money. I genuinely hope this car can do off-roading very well.

Wish it was just a couple of crores. Now the G63 AMG costs 4.6 Cr on road Delhi and the S-class costs 2 cr.

With 4.6 cr, G wagon is competing with Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Land Rover Range Rover SV LWB 4.4 petrol, Lamborghini Huracan, Porsche 911 Turbo S with all options, McLaren GT, Ferrari Roma, Ferrari F8, Ferrari Portofino, Bentley Continental GT, Aston Martin Vantage, DB12, DBX on the price front.

Now, this electric version will surely cost more than the G63 variant.

I’m unsure as to why anyone would prefer a Mercedes truck over a Bentley/Lamborghini/Aston Martin/Range Rover/Ferrari

A lot of the cars you've highlighted above are hardcore single-minded sportscars. The G63 is really, a showoff car. People buy it to flaunt their success and excess. That's why Mercedes can afford to price it that high here. Nobody using their reasoning would buy a hardcore 4x4 with a thirsty V8 engine and supercar-spec wheels and tyres. This is what makes the G63 special. It's a ridiculous thing.

I still feel that Mercedes has outpriced itself now with the G-wagon. I have also mentioned cars which fit in the same category as the G-wagon. Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga, Aston Martin DBX are pretty much performance SUVs just like the G-wagon and also offer similar or better performance, more exclusivity and higher brand pull. Thus, these should help flaunt success and excess better.

In conclusion, Mercedes pricing is ridiculous now if they feel they can compete with Lamborghini, Bentley and Aston Martin and also because the same G-wagon was available for around 3 crore literally an year back.

The "G-Turn" will be the crowd favorite in India I guess.

- Imagine driving in the wrong side of the road and you spot a cop at a distance, you can just execute a "G-turn"

- You see cops with a breath analyzer, you no longer need to take the painful 3 point turn on roads to escape them, G-turn

- You are caught in a tricky situation and getting mobbed because of your stupidity, G-turn and kick people out of the way and wait for your parents to do the rest

The electric G comes with an option of having either the spare wheel mounted at the back or a box for the charger. The square you see is the box for the charger.
