While I agree that BYD has a lot of experience in the field, I disagree with the claim of Atto 3 tech being superior to the BE 6e and XEV 9e.

BYD Atto 3 is a 3 years old vehicle and the battery technology including BMS has come a long way in these 3 years. You can see that from the charging speeds of Atto 3 itself which is limited to 70KW for the 50kWh variant. Just 2-3 years back, Tesla used to sell their vehicles with BYD batteries with much higher DC charging speeds compared to BYD's own vehicles. This was possible due to the superior thermal management of Tesla BMS. Over the last 2-3 years BYD improved the charging speeds of their cars a lot.

Also, the cockpit chipset is much superior to the one used in BYD Atto 3. Snapdragon 8295 chipset is currently being used only in Chinese mainstream high-end models not yet in entry-level models like Atto 3.

While reliability is a concern for the new Mahindra EVs, the good thing is they are giving unlimited warranty for the battery pack and most of the components used are from popular suppliers.

While Windsor EV has a lot of space in the rear, there were many complaints about under-thigh support. These new Mahindra models seem to have good under-thigh support based on the videos and pictures seen so far. Maybe the official reviews can compare these important aspects between the competing cars.

The only advantage I see in these two EVs is larger battery size & high found clearance
All the main EV specs are better in Mahindra EVs:
Bigger battery and range,
Better performance,
Very high DC fast charging speed (140KW vs 50/60KW),
Faster AC charging option (11KW)

I do agree Mahindra's do throw in niggles randomly. But these are small and fixable and IMO not the deal breakers.

Regarding the XUV7oo, it's definitely not a gimmicky vehicle. Everything especially the fundamentals- Engines, Gearboxes, Suspensions, refinement, headlights etc. are a cut above the competition. Hence its been lauded and continues to be the segment benchmark even after 3 years of its launch.

The cheesy names and zingy lighting are a turn-off. Gives a feel that you landed from another planet or heading to a wedding. Is there really a market for such designs? Most successful cars in Indian market in this price band have clean design.
Pricing-wise, I hope they have a very good variant at 25L, which is the current limit for 0% road tax in KA.

Yes, BE 6E looks better. Btw I am pretty sure you wont find more than 2 screens on the base XEV 9E

I think the Windsor EV has more space at the back. In China any car that has less or cramped rear leg room doesn't sell well, that is why you see all the new launches in China have huge rear leg room.

XUV400 itself is 1821mm and the BE6e and XEV9 will have higher width because of the longer Blade battery and the crash rating.

I somehow have not liked the DRL treatment done to Mahindra vehicles. They do not look elegant or classy to my eyes. In the Thar Roxx it looks good, since the headlights are circular and Mahindra designers could not add their touch to the design. I find the DRLs in XUV 700 to be not so bad as the other vehicles.

Re: Mahindra XUV.e9 electric SUV spied. EDIT: XEV 9e Launched @ Rs. 21.90 lakh; BE 6e @ Rs. 18.90 la

Kudos to Mahindra! That was an Apple like unveiling event. They have really deep dived into this new range of evs, and thought about a lot of things! It definitely looks well thought out, albeit a little gimicky. But there is no denying that these products will be a big boost for EVs in India. It may make competition rethink their product offerings and strategy. Definitely exciting times ahead. I like many cannot wait to pre-book it - it's a great attempt by an Indian manufacturer, and I'm proud to say the least.

Having said that, some of my random observations after seeing the event and a few videos by journalists:
1) There is an ergonomic issue in terms of ingress and egress. This may be a big issue for senior folks or any one with back issue.
1A) One of the reasons the Curvv didn't sell is because of the limited rear headroom. If a 6+ footer cannot sit at the back, then you may lose a portion of the market.
2) I believe in one of the posts I saw that the XEV 9E had rear window sunblinds. Definitely a welcome step. Let's hope this also comes in the XUV update.
3) Didn't come across ventilation seats anywhere.
4) The gloss black on the exterior definitely looks in. We saw the impact it has on looks in Curvv too. But I'm not sure about maintenance, and how it will hold up in the long run.
5) There is a lot of texture under the gloss black, which you may not be able to do PPF to.
6) There were niggles with the powered tailgate during the showcase; even the hood wasn't closing. Similar issue was faced by TATA during the Curvv.EV launch when one of the headlights wasn't working. They need to improve this.
7) The BE 6E has too much plastic on the inside. The quality of materials may have to be seen in person.
8) Despite having class leading wheelbase, from the videos I gathered that the rear leg room wasn't reflecting the length of the wheelabse. Price aside, the legroom and ergonomics may be a big differentiator for Windsor.
9) The XEV 9E seemed like the more practical car - however it may or may not attract existing XUV owners, due to the similarities. BE 6E on the other hand is a fresh take and design, and it definitely wows everyone.
10) I like many other feel that the design may not age well, but they surely are contemporary and have an immediate impact on potential buyers.
11) The power and torque and acceleration figures are not adding up vis a vis the competition. Maybe the BE 6E is heavier than the competition. Not sure if it may have an impact on the range as well - as Ioniq 5 despite a 60 kWh battery is able to do a similar range as Mahindra's 80 kWh.
12) The steering wheel looks downright ugly. Too much of piano black everywhere plus screens = a forensic agent's paradise! I had this issue with the new E Class why superscreen and piano black - it looks good when it's clean, but the penalty you pay when it's dirty is far greater. Also it is very scratch prone - not sure how this car will hold up in the second hand car market.
13) They need better naming convention.
14) Declaring a life time warranty for the battery was such a master stroke. All the fence sitters are now willing to jump over to the EV side!
15) The new key looks great. But unlike what autocar reported - it didn't seem to have remote park.
16) With no key ring, how will the valet driver put a tag? Considering there may just be more than one Mahindra EV with them!

These are not complaints, just a few observations. Like I said I'm super excited and definitely in the queue to buy one. It makes me so proud to see such home grown cars that are globally competitive!

Re: Mahindra XUV.e9 electric SUV spied. EDIT: XEV 9e Launched @ Rs. 21.90 lakh; BE 6e @ Rs. 18.90 la

Such a wonderful product, design is polarizing though.

500+ KM real world range and this can easily replace my Breeza ZDI AMT 2019 which i hate for being noisy and jerky at the same time.

I am wondering how this kind of products are going to impact the ICE market in near future. What will be impact on resale value of existing ICE cars with aging 5+ years.

I am aware that ICE has its own fan following, but to me it looks with more and more EVs in market in next few year ICE cars may become irrelevant pretty soon if we are able to manage charging infra on highways.

I am hopeful that for city drives, office goers like me one or two charge in month may be sufficient and I am ok to spend that kind of time waiting at a nearby charging station, (even if i dont get a charger at home, which might be a challenge for people living in apartments) which by the way are sufficient in numbers for now.

Any thoughts?

Re: Mahindra XUV.e9 electric SUV spied. EDIT: XEV 9e Launched @ Rs. 21.90 lakh; BE 6e @ Rs. 18.90 la

The press release from the manufacturer was like a developer conference with specs listed all across that would not be meaningful to the consumer.

The design looks better than the recently released one from its competitor. The interior is a hit and miss with some of it looking really tacky and not classy for a top end car that expensive.

At the end of the day with all the complexities that the manufacturer has listed, the car needs to deliver a smooth seamless experience, and it will take some months if not years to demonstrate that. Talking points on things like processor speed and lines of code etc. are passe. The world is aware of mobile phone manufacturers that use less powerful electronics but achieve better and more worry-free results. This will be no different.

For older folks like me, risk mitigation in personal transportation is very important and it may take a while to imbibe that trust into a product with so much electronic complexity.

However, I am super dam proud of Mahindra to conceptualize this and bring it to the market. I wish it all the best and would love to see it succeed.

Mahindra EVs are here to stay and will only evolve. Even the EV market will evolve. Future EVs will only get better and cheaper (like smartphones). Your next EV after 6-8 years can be a true blue Indian Mahindra EV.

This is my thought after reading your post. Obviously, you'll know your situation better.
Yes, BYD makes fantastic vehicles that have been battle tested for years. The issue I have is with their ASS - it's essentially non existent in India. People are waiting for months to get replacement parts right now. I am hoping that over time, this will get better as they start selling more vehicles in India.

I am planning to keep my order with BYD, but put it on hold for a month or two - I expect a price drop to happen in the next couple of months. I plan on making a call closer to the launch date of Mahindra.

Mahindra is set to take over Indian market on EV front as well. I won't be surprised if they top the sales chart in the next 12 months. These EVs are crazy man! Only gripe I have are just the 2 below:

1) Naming convention doesn't seem to resonate well as it's going to be difficult for new crowd to keep these model names in mind. Should've gone ahead with existing line up names and adding a EV tag to them.

2) White interiors and more screens - they reflect luxury, no doubt! But, I feel it's becoming more of tablets and excessive usage of dirt attracting white materials! A small gripe from my side, that's it!

Slightly OT, but an essential one for me. Tata is becoming next Maruti, lacks freshness, innovation, having a similar design across their line up, misses on exclusivity factor, weak leadership which I strongly beleive they're not as strong as Mahindra's.

Can we now agree that Tata Motors is establishing itself as a front-runner in automotive design trends? The exterior styling closely mirrors the Curvv concept, while the interior design theme strongly reflects Tata's signature aesthetics. This is particularly evident in elements such as the steering wheel, gear knob, and touch panel, all of which showcase a distinctly Tata inspired design language.

Absolutely. For City use, the electric cars are very suitable.

But if you love cars and long drives, then the ICE Engines with turbo chargers and/or more than four cylinders are amazing. The sound of the engines, gear changes and the driving feel is unbeatable.

Also, you can take them to the Himalayas (north and northeast). In colder temperatures the EV battery range will quickly run out, or the car won't even start. Good luck in finding charging points!

Frankly, I don't know why the passenger and rear screens are needed. Cars are meant to spent time together and not being glued to the screen. Except when you are chauffeur driven. I guess thats why Mahindra is targeting the luxury SUVs.

These EVs are more like gadgets and the manufacturers are becoming like tech companies. When they were speaking about Snapdragon processor, teraflops, ai, software, etc, then I was wondering on whether it was a car launch or some tech event...

Also, if you are staying in flood prone areas of your city, or stuck in water logged roads, then be careful to remove your vehicle within 30 minutes (this is what is claimed).

I have been sitting on the fence for quite a long time in terms of an EV purchase and this is a masterstroke from Mahindra!

Can this be used in a single car garage that can do city & highway runs? When I mean highway runs, can this comfortably do 100 - 100 kmph approximately 500 KMs with 15 - 20% of juice still left? If so, this will eliminate all range anxiety related aspects that come with an EV purchase
