Hyundai/Kia to recall 500,000 EVs globally to replace ICCUs | Includes Ioniq 5 & EV6

Hyundai Motor Group is initiating a significant recall of electric vehicles, impacting 170,000 units in Korea and an estimated 500,000 globally. This recall focuses on models equipped with faulty integrated charging control units (ICCUs), such as the Hyundai IONIQ 5, following reports of ICCU failures and a preliminary investigation by the US NHTSA. Despite earlier attempts at free repairs, Hyundai and Kia are now opting for a voluntary recall to address persistent issues.

The remedial measures include ICCU replacements and the rollout of software updates for the affected vehicles. Industry experts suggest that Hyundai's proactive stance anticipates potential regulatory actions in North America and Europe. Nevertheless, there are apprehensions that such a widespread recall could undermine consumer confidence in electric vehicles, particularly in Korea's comparatively slower-growing market compared to Europe.

Sure hope India is considered significant enough to be part of this recall else it will leave a really bad impression in existing and potential customers’ minds.

Re: Hyundai/Kia to recall 500,000 EVs globally to replace ICCUs | Includes Ioniq 5 & EV6

Campaign Description
Certain 2022-2023MY IONIQ 5 (NE1) and 2023MY IONIQ 6 (CE1) vehicles may exhibit a condition where low 12V auxiliary battery charging occurs due to an ICCU (Intelligent Charging Control Unit) fault which may set the following DTC P1A9096 – “DC/DC Converter Input Voltage Sensor Fault”. When a fault occurs, the vehicle may enter a reduced power mode while various warning lights, an audible chime will sound, and large messaging in the vehicle’s instrument cluster will appear, instructing the driver to stop the vehicle. The vehicle will be inspected for a DTC P1A9096 and may require either an ICCU software update or ICCU replacement and potential fuse replacement (if fuse is blown when inspected).

Affected Vehicles (Certain):
• 2022-2023MY IONIQ 5 (NE1) produced from 10/04/2021 - 06/22/2023
• 2023MY IONIQ 6 (CE1) produced from 12/14/2022 - 06/20/2023

Please see attachments for more details on the recall campaign.

Got a response from Hyundai India- 'We have no communication from HO regarding the same for the Indian IONIQ 5 units at the moment. If any such incident takes place, we will inform you on priority.'

Either the cars sold in India do not have the ICCU problem or Hyundai is taking its own sweet time doing the recall in India, if ever there is one.

Re: Hyundai/Kia to recall 500,000 EVs globally to replace ICCUs | Includes Ioniq 5 & EV6

Kia India has issued a voluntary recall for 1,138 units of the #EV6 manufactured between 3rd March 2022 and 14th April 2023.

Quote:
The recall is prompted by a potential error in the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), which may affect the performance of 12V Auxiliary battery
