Exactly! A super fast car at ~57 OTR that will eat most European cars for breakfast in terms of acceleration is an attractive, mouth-watering proposition!

The other cars that can compete with this with this are Ms, AMGs and proper supercars which are priced atleast 60% higher with some a whopping 3x-4x more!

Beats the Volvo XC40 recharge sub 5 second sprint from 0-100 kmph

re: BYD Seal electric sedan launched at 41 lakhs

Brilliant! Superb!
Chew on this; you snooty-arsed Germans!!

Make no mistake, Seal is one of the most accomplished and awarded new cars in the market. It’s no pushover. This launch has made everything from the Ioniq 5 to iX1 to i4 to C40 to EV6 to EQB look pitifully overpriced in one go. What remains to be seen is what kind of commitment the parent wants to show to the market in terms of units committed. Nobody wants a situation where they make all this noise and then bring in one or two lots of 200 cars per year. Going by this aggressive pricing, it seems they are here to play.

I can’t wait to drive the top-spec 500+bhp AWD model. To put this into perspective, Merc offers this kind of power on the E63AMG!!

Meanwhile, BMW wants you to buy their 130-something bhp X1 for 55L

Re: BYD Seal and localized Atto 3 India launch delayed to 2024

Hi,
This particular SEAL Sedan car made the BYD brand more reachable.

BYD brand was not known to many of them in our circle. Now in the last 3 to 4 weeks, many were talking about this SEAL sedan car from BYD.

And today the prices were revealed and need to check in our circle anyone is going to opt for it leaving out Hyundai and KIA. Dynamic variant itself gets a good range and the car feels very premium in images.

Re: BYD Seal and localized Atto 3 India launch delayed to 2024

Come on BYD, you can definitely price the Atto 3 60kWh at 21 Lakh which includes SKD 35% duties and 5% GST. Only unknown is the cost of freight to India for 20 feet container or what ever is mode of transport for SKD units.

Spot on pricing, considering the specs. Great to see saner pricing from BYD, after Atto 3.

This should reset the price expectations for the rest of the EV brands. Here’s how it looks now:

BMW i4 - decent car, bloated by 10-12 lacs
Kia EV6 - great car, bloated by 8-10 lacs
Volvo XC40 - good car, bloated by 2-3 lacs
Volvo C40 - good car, bloated by 5 lacs
BYD Seal - good car, good price
Hyundai Ioniq 5 - good car, bloated by 5 lacs
Tesla Model 3 - great car, great price?
BYD Atto 3 - good car, bloated by 4-5 lacs
MG ZS EV - decent car, decent value (after recent price reduction)
Tata Nexon EV - decent car, bloated by 4-5 lacs
Tata Punch EV - good car, bloated by 2-3 lacs
Tata Tiago - decent car, decent value

—-
Should you buy it?
Yes, if you can overcome the quirky interior styling and low brand recall. Otherwise, the BYD Seal is a good car at a good price. And ‘Premium’ is the variant to get

Also, a few cons to consider before taking the plunge (not dealbreakers, but still):
- Low GC of 145mm and long 2920mm wheelbase, not a good combo for Indian roads
- At 4800mm (longer than an Octavia), manoeuvrability could be an issue
- Average boot space of just 455 ltrs +50frunk
- not much space for rear seat passenger to rest legs under low-slung driver seat
- very low slung car so ingress/egress could be a challenge
- cheesy infotainment system

If you’re not in a hurry, wait for a Tesla Model 3

Re: BYD Seal and localized Atto 3 India launch delayed to 2024

Dynamic variant has competition in the same showroom in the form of the Atto 3 for 7 lakhs less.

The benefit of the Dynamic variant as an EV (apart from the fact that it offers much more features and looks absolutely stunning) would be much better highway efficiency at 100+ speeds due to its much lower drag coefficient of 0.219 vs 0.29 for Atto3. As mentioned during the presentation, this would lead to extra 8km of range for every 0.01 reduction in drag coefficient. The range difference between Atto 3 and Seal Dynamic at constant 100kmph could be ~50km even though the battery and powertrain are exactly the same. Thats not a small difference in the EV world where affordable cars struggle to cross 250km at those speeds while this might touch 450km on the smaller battery.

But then the real deal is the Premium Variant that is priced strategically just 50k less than the Ioniq 5. Seal is much more powerful than the Ioniq 5 while also offering a 10KWh higher battery capacity and a Drag coefficient of 0.219 vs 0.288 for the Ioniq 5. Both these advantages could offer the Seal a massive ~100km range advantage over the Ioniq 5 on the highway at an identical 100kmph cruise. Taking the total highway range beyond 500-550km. Lets not forget that this is 40% more powerful than the Ioniq 5. The Ioniq 5 does have the charging speed advantage, but I doubt we have more than a handful of such high speed chargers across the country to realize this advantage.

This brings us to the Performance variant. That thing is in a class of its own with no competition. Never before have I seen a 500hp AWD Performance sedan selling for roughly the same price as a 215hp Toyota Sedan but this has come true today.

Even though these are priced much more than what mass market cars in India sell at, these cars have brought performance levels at never seen before prices to our country. The best part is that the prices can only get better, much better.

The 189K Yuan pricing is for the Seal 'Champion" variant which can't be directly compared to the base model offered here since it's been slightly modified (less features) and brought to their market with a decrease in price to further undercut Model 3 in China. But I do understand your point, thank you. Even so, with a simple reverse calculation like what was done by @ferrarirules, BYD has been ultra-aggressive.

It looks like the mid variant also falls under the 70% duty bracket. Personally, the mid variant is the most VFM considering the huge battery and the performance variant can literally compete with vehicles 3 times it's price.

Also, BYD being vertically integrated helps price them even more competitively. It is all very interesting.

A couple of things I could possibly surmise from this however is that :

1. Tata (especially) & Mahindra seem to have plenty margins on their EVs!

2. They could reduce Atto3 prices easily by a few lakhs if they wish to.

Similar strategy will happen with Toyota as they buy out Panasonic EV battery.

Re: BYD Seal and localized Atto 3 India launch delayed to 2024

Wow these are insane prices!!! At this rate Tesla surely must be developing cold feet.

Even existing players especially Kia EV6 and Volvo Recharge suddenly look unfairly priced and positioned. Hell even Hyundai may find it a tad tough to sell Ioniq easily.

Of course a car's true verdict will be dependent on various parameters but purely from a pricing point the Chinese are trying to outwit the Koreans who had outwitted the Japanese who had outwitted anyone else before them

Re: BYD Seal and localized Atto 3 India launch delayed to 2024

Really good pricing. If the general consensus is good for a CBU product, you know they have priced it very competitively.

Only thing left for BYD to do now is to reduce the Atto3 price by 3-4L and run bit of marketing as well.

Needs better dealership coverage too.

For a city like bangalore itself, there are just 3 dealerships.
With none for entire south bangalore.

Calculation details:

Ex showroom - Rs. 41,00,000
Price without GST - Rs. 38,95,000
Price without import duty -70%(below $40,000 car) - Rs. 22,91,176
22,91,176 INR = 27,631 USD

Starting Price of Model 3 Standard Range RWD in China

2,45,900 RMB = 34,155 USD

Starting Price of BYD Seal 60.5 KWh in China

189,800 RMB = 26,363 USD

So yes, Tesla is much more expensive than the Seal Dynamic. But the Tesla is also more practical, 40% more powerful and 25% more efficient (as per WLTP) than the base Seal. And it also offers Superchargers in all markets it operates in. Tesla Superchargers make all Teslas mainstream cars since highway charging becomes a non issue. Tesla Superchargers, even though paid, routinely offer the best charging prices per kwh. This coupled with higher charging speeds AND best in class efficiency means shorter charging stops at a much more reliable charging network. So the additional 20% spent over a BYD may just be worth it.

Also, Tesla does not come with a stigma of Chinese origin so it might find it much easier to start manufacturing here than a Chinese company. If not for its typical Tesla quirks, the Model 3 is a superior EV compared to the BYD Seal. The only problem is that Tesla is an American company and Americans have a bad reputation of shutting shop and running away from India .

Anyways, more competition is always better for the market.

re: BYD Seal electric sedan launched at 41 lakhs

I was just looking at the dimensions of the car and its slightly bigger than Audi A4 in all aspects and almost matching Camry. It is also 5* rated on safety.

The Ioniq and Seal will steal the market from the Germans unless they price their vehicles appropriately. I think even Skoda will have to think long and hard when they bring back the Octavia and Superb.

I really really hope they bring in the hybrids at even more competitive pricing. BYD cut the prices on almost all the cars in China by a large margin recently.

Wow, fab pricing. Definitely not expected. We can expect price revision by Hyundai and Kia in the near future.

Moreover, for 53L you get acceleration of 3.8s! The only problem I see with this is the lack of dealership coverage.

Would be a game changer in the 50lakh segment.

Re: BYD Seal and localized Atto 3 India launch delayed to 2024

So a base model Seal is priced at 26k USD in China translates to a 41 lakh price in India with 70% CBU import duties and 5% GST. It roughly translates to 26000 USD x INR158 = 41 lakh

But the Atto 3 top end variant which costs 20.5k USD for 60kWh in China is priced at 34 lakh in India. So even if Atto 3 is imported as a CBU it should cost 20500 x INR158 = 32 lakh.

But the Atto 3 is imported as a SKD and it should be taxed at 35% duties, so they can price it at least 35% less if they want to and price it around 23 lakh.

Which means Tata EV division is making boat loads of money with just 5% GST.
