Re: BYD Seal electric sedan launched at 41 lakhs

NICE CAR, NICE PRICE. I pass by the BYD Chennai plant every single day for work and not once I have seen a SEAL in the facility. It's a small plant which is filled to the brim with Atto 3s and a few e6s and a couple of their trucks and it's very much visible from the road. Probably their first lot is yet to reach our shores and is Enroute.

Whoever decided to put that 2.8 badge should be fired. No questions asked. In an era where manufacturers are omitting their full name logos in lieu of cost cutting, here is BYD with their atrocious 3.8s badge. And yeah, BYD and BYD SEAL in case you forget you're driving a BYD.

Imagine if they launched this car with 180mm ground clearance, coupe-ish

How do you use a car with this GC in India?

The BMW X1 Petrol sells for 60 odd lakhs on-road, with a 3 cylinder petrol making 132 bhp. Even less than I remembered. Only 14 bhp more than my i20 N Line that I purchased for <14 lakhs, which also has DCT and shift paddles.

Do check the full thread here. It's hilarious : https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/india...8-90-lakh.html (BMW X1 Petrol now available in M Sport trim; Priced at Rs 48.90 lakh).

The BMW X1 sDrive18i M Sport is powered by a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine that makes 132 BHP @ 4,400-6,500 rpm and 230 Nm @ 1,500-4,000 rpm. The engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with shift paddles.

We dont know how much Tata needs to shell out for the batteries that they need to import from China. This is the same issue faced by other global manufacturers. They price the Chinese cars cheaper than the cost of the batteries itself, killing competition. I sat in a BYD taxi in Mexico City, they are simply awesome, they have the tech, they have the money, they have the ability/capacity to scale. They may very well kill a lot of companies we know.

It still doesn't work out. Tata's can be the cheapest because they also have a level of vertical integration in the form of their steel manufacturing and other related OEMs too. Yet you will see Tata Curvv priced close to the 4m+ SUVs for sure

Re: BYD Seal electric sedan launched at 41 lakhs

Very attractive pricing indeed - with BYD deciding to create facts on the ground to induce the government to approve its proposed investment plan.

However, the key challenge is whether BYD will be permitted to continue to operate in India in the long run. If you believe that is the case, this would be a good buy. Would I have bought this instead of the Ioniq 5? I think not - for the same reason why I didn’t test drive the Atto 3. I am not comfortable BYD will be here even in the medium term given geopolitics. Also I prefer a pseudo SUV style to a sedan.

But will this force Hyundai to launch the face lifted Ioniq 5 and perhaps the AWD? Almost certainly yes - and that would indeed have been a better buy than my car.

re: BYD Seal electric sedan launched at Rs. 41 lakhs

Extremely competitive pricing indeed. Which other car can you buy in India for this price which does 0 to 100 in 3.8 seconds and has running cost which are cheaper than a petrol 2 wheeler. There is a reason why Tata and Mahindra are lobbying the government against competition because they will be eaten alive.

re: BYD Seal electric sedan launched at Rs. 41 lakhs

One must compliment the Chinese for the strides they have made in the last 15 years and the way they are snapping at the heels of the European & Amercian car makers. They are backed financially & in terms of access to resources by the Chinese State.

These prices are what would be called dumping prices i.e. designed to kill local industry. A car is more than just the price - reliability, A.S.S., availability of spares, dealership network and so much more. And BYD has to start manufacturing in India very soon which it may or may not be allowed to. The Govt of India has clearly decided to go down the path of telling the Chinese if you violate our border agreements that stood the test of time for 4 decades then you cannot participate in the India growth story. Sayonara.

Would I have bought the BYD Seal over the Volvo C40 only due to the price difference in favour of the BYD -the answer is no. Reliability, local reputation, great ASS matter more to me. Of course, different buyers will have different priorities.

re: BYD Seal electric sedan launched at Rs. 41 lakhs

The Chinese across industries have had a clear advantage globally in terms of price to performance ratio. In the automobile industry, after a long time of stereotypical Chinese copying, they learnt the tricks of the trade using many global JVs and finally managed to surpass the global brands in terms of EV technology and manufacturing. A huge amount of vertical integration and Chinese manufacturing prowess lends them an insane pricing advantage.

Gone are the days when “Chinese” meant cheap, low quality and poorly engineered superficial products. Chinese tech for a long time has been industry leading in terms of quality, tech and engineering. This is translating to cars now. Despite being affordable, Chinese cars are engineered extremely well with the latest and greatest technology, combined with class leading safety, build and material quality.

The global onslaught of Chinese cars is nothing but a huge positive for us consumers. Serves as a wake up call for the automobile industry which has been ridiculously overpricing cars recently. 65L would get you a BMW 530d a decade ago and today it gets you a 3 cylinder BMW X1 with less power than a Creta! Meanwhile BYD comes all guns blazing with a 530hp D+ Supersedan for 53L with top notch quality, safety and technology.

No wonder the global automotive giants who once ridiculed China are trembling at the sight of Chinese cars. This is nothing but history repeating itself. The Japanese and Koreans were once ridiculed by the American and European manufacturers for making poor cars but no one was laughing once they came all guns blazing with quality value products. It’s China’s turn now, hopefully followed by India next?

Instead of establishing trade barriers at the cost of consumers, the global manufacturers should learn from them about rapid development and vertical integration and compete with them with competitive products like Stellantis suggested. Hope people see the proportion these cars offer instead of dismissing them due to stereotypes or geopolitical grudges, as always, the consumer wins.

re: BYD Seal electric sedan launched at Rs. 41 lakhs

With this kind of price, performance, looks, specs on offer BYD might even convert the hard core anti-China guys (including me).

On the contrary i feel it might turn into an opportunity for Indian automotive industry to innovate fast enough to beat the Chinese at this game, provided some decent government backing and quick decisions at the management level, even European OEM's may want to join the party.
Never know India could become the battleground against this Chinese onslaught.

Till that happens God save the competition from BYD.

Given the dimensions, a 2 car stacking is possible in a 40 feet container.

The landed cost (freight + origin charges + local destination charges) will be around $ 800-1,000 today.

That's roughly $ 500 / car. This excludes though the origin transport charges (from factory to port) and destination transport charges from port to warehouse.
