BYD Dolphin EV name trademarked in India

BYD has filed a trademark for the Dolphin EV in India. It is likely to be the brand’s most affordable electric offering in India.

The BYD Dolphin is a 4-door electric hatchback that measures more than 4.2 meters in length. The car comes with a 60.4 kWh battery pack offering a maximum range of 427 km. It powers an electric motor that produces 201 BHP and 290 Nm.

Re: BYD Dolphin EV name trademarked in India

Is it just me or does anyone think the BYD Dolphin's front resembles Mahindra Verito?

Not sure how far the car would appeal to audence, given BYD's limited sales and service network. Also, the Dolphin name reminds of a negative history ( eg.Sipani.Dolphin and Honda City 2nd gen whose codename was Dolphin. ). The last reference is off-topic though.

Mods, please feel free to remove the last part if unnecessary.

Yes it also gives off a Tata Bolt vibe on the front for some reason. And the overall body line feels like a mix of Elite i20 (2nd Gen i20) and Current Gen i20.

I guess the design language could be liked in the Indian Market.

BYD should bring Seagull to India as it would help them penetrate more into the market.

Exactly, Seagull and Dolphin if priced well, will do good numbers as they have no competition. The only problem is they should consider assembling (CKD) it in India. If brought by SKD it will be difficult to justify the price. CBU import will be even more tough to sell.

Re: BYD Dolphin EV name trademarked in India

Dolphin is a nice name and in general loved by all. This somehow reminds of the latest Jazz sold in Japan. In India, BYD is trying to be in a space which is premium but not at the level of German trio or Lexus.
Coming back to Dolphin, if priced appropriately, this could symbolically take the same place as Mercedes hatchback A class 4-5 years back. Given its 4.2 meters, it’ll be fairly spacious and BYD uses premium materials for interiors. Exterior is also quite pleasing. This will be the same size as that of Nexon or even slightly bigger. If they can price the top model close to the Nexon EV LR, a logical EV buyer would definitely give this a consideration- given BYD has a market presence there. With the mentioned timings and power figures, this will be a proper luxury hot hatch which can leave the Polo GTs and N lines in dust!
I am wishing this launches soon with some cladding to give it a pseudo SUV feel at a price around Nexon LR. Even Tata, Mahindra have a slew of EV launches planned in next 2 years. Interesting times for an EV buyer

Drove the Dolphin in Nepal last week. What timing no? The video is online on my channel (don't wanna share link as mods are quick enough to issue infractions)

Overall feel was nice, comfortable drive and ample features. Styling has few interesting elements as well. Not as quick as expected but does the job

Was this the standard version or the more powerful larger battery pack version?

Its a good looking car no doubt. But I believe that the MG4 is nicer looking as per my taste. Will be great if and when these cars get launched here.

Bunny.. does the vehicle fall in the category of i20/altroz or is it higher in terms of size if you exclude the length.
Few things I wanted to know which wasn't detailed in that video,

1. what's the peak charging speed and boot space?
2. was there a frunk capability for this?
3. Apart from power consumption shown on the tiny screen, was there any other nerd info present in the infotainment screen? like how much power consumed by motor/climate control/battery mgmt. etc

Re: BYD Dolphin EV name trademarked in India

I really wish BYD launch their whole portfolio of products in India. While I appreciate the efforts put by Indian brands here, BYD have a good selection spread out through all segments and from what I read and see online - BYD have tight control on the manufacturing process, and this should mean better quality.
Competition should increase the quality of brands here.

Re: BYD Dolphin EV name trademarked in India

Brace yourself as BYD Dolphin Mini is releasing soon in global markets.

Touted to shake up the entry level EV segment it is now seen in Brazil.

Quote:
After the Yuan Plus and Dolphin, BYD will enter yet another messy segment in terms of price. The Dolphin Mini will arrive in February in the range of R$ 100 thousand to not only be a competitor of the entry-level electrics, but also to put a doubt in buyers of traditional compact hatches.
Quote:
The BYD Dolphin Mini is expected to be sold in two versions, with a variation in battery capacity, of 30 kWh in the cheapest and 38.8 kWh in the most expensive. Dealers talk about R$ 99,800 in the first and R$ 114,800 in the second, always with a 75 hp electric motor and 14.9 kgfm of torque if it comes in the same configuration sold in China. By the Chinese cycle, the compact runs from 300 to 400 km with one charge in each configuration.

Yes, it is the same car.

- South America is the first international market for Seagull/Dolphin Mini

- Both Dolphin and Dolphin Mini trademarks are filed in India.

Re: BYD Dolphin EV name trademarked in India

The first thing I would remove is the "Build Your Dreams" badging at the back of the Seagull. But that probably won't be possible on the Dolphin.

Anyways, the Seagull / Dolphin Mini is roughly the same size as a Tiago but with the wheelbase and battery packs similar to the Nexon EV MR/LR.

Smaller + lighter car and bigger batteries means this car will probably beat the Tiago, Tigor, Punch and Nexon EVs on either price or range or both.

The limited 75 Ps of power probably limits its appeal up to the Punch MR, so for now Punch LR and above models seem to be safe.

Expect competitive pricing of this car because the Chinese are not known to waste time messing around. There is a price war ongoing in the EV market and the Chinese will work really hard to fuel that fire. Once the dust settles, BYD has the potential to win over the entire EV market to themselves. Given their offerings, they won't just be winning sales from other EVs.
