State-wise EV sales in India | MH at top position, Kerala at no.2 spot

Economic times has crunched Vahan data and has come up with the state wise sales share of electric cars for the CY 2023.

Kerala, which accounts for 4% of the all passenger vehicles sold in India, had a 13.2 % share in the 82,000 odd electric vehicles sold in CY 2023. It is only trailing Maharashtra which has a much larger share in the overall passenger vehicles market.

Overall southern states - Kerala, Karanataka and Tamil Nadu accounted for 33.7%, central states - Maharashtra and Gujarat accounted for 25.8% and northern states - Delhi, UP, Rajasthan and Haryana accounted for 22.9% share in the electric vehicle sales.

Quote:
TPEM's Chief Commercial Officer, Vivek Srivatsa said "With growing awareness about the technology and its usage, concerns over range anxiety are easing out. Especially in these states (Kerala, Karnataka and Gujarat), we are seeing more and more consumers becoming comfortable (buying electric cars). Our database shows 90% of our consumers charge their cars at home. The average distance they drive stands at about 40km/day"

MG motor is selling about 100 units of cars in Bangalore alone, compared to about 50-odd units in much larger market like National Capital Region

Useful to see EVs sold in a state as a percentage of EVs sold nationwide. Helps car makers also know the market and where sales are highest.

Separately, it would also be interesting to see what is the percentage of EVs sold in a state compared to the total cars sold in THAT state. Will be a good pointer to the level of EV adoption for each state.

With the push coming from KSEB since 2020, it's no surprise here. Back when EV chargers were spread out thing in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Kerala enjoyed charges at almost all districts thanks to KSEB. I just hope BESCOM wakes up from it's deep slumber of almost 4 years, no new FC in those 4 years!!!

Why am I not surprised? In a state where tax on fuel is a major source of income, people will always find ways to cut down their fuel expense. This trend will stop the moment KSEB decides to provide separate meters for charging EVs and charge special rates for charging. Also while in Kerala, you are never far from a city, so you can travel without range anxiety and the fear of getting stranded in a remote place.

Just a continuation of the diesel craze in Kerala for obvious reasons.

And importantly the urban sprawl across the state works out perfectly fine for EV adoption. Never ever away from a charger (maybe not in the hilly districts) and standalone houses means no issue for charging at home.

I was hoping that Tata or Mahindra would ensure a charger at their dealerships which would mean there would be atleast one charging station in every district, but KSEB sprang a surprise by a good network of charging stations and even standalone charging points for 2/3 wheelers at the randomest places.

I am not surprised by the stats for Kerala. A few reasons that I can think of:
  1. Exorbitant taxes and cess on fuel price, making it one of the highest in South India.
  2. Adoption of private vehicles due to the shrinking public transport options after the pandemic.
  3. Increasing congestion on the roads due to vehicle density, thereby more and more opting for two wheelers, including EVs.
  4. Adoption of roof top solar power generation at individual homes, thus buying/replacing with an EV makes economic sense.
  5. Relatively cheaper and steady supply of EB power and more charging options.

Believe the reasons for a faster adoption are
1) Very few people drive more than 200KMs a day in Kerala (So less range anxiety). Its possible but its also stressful given the narrow and winding roads.
2) Most people stay at a house (not in apartments) and hence its easy to set up a charger infrastructure.
3) Adoption of Solar. We had one at our place from the late 90s!
4) KSEB providing infrastructure for EV charging.

Kerala is to India what California is to USA in many senses. Environmental consciousness, high emphasis on cleanliness, tilt towards more equality in society (or at least elimination of the abject poverty), more liberal values including empowerment of minorities and women etc. Hybrids and EVs rose first in California before elsewhere in the USA and I think we will see the same phenomenon in Kerala. Of course, it has the severe limitations of lack of industrial base, lack of space etc. that hold it back as compared to CA.

Kerala has a lot more independent homes than apartments. So that's one major factor. Installing a charger in your own house is a lot easier than in many urban cities across India, where living in apartments are the norm.

Exactly. Kerala has more independent houses. Karnataka has the highest road tax for ICE vehicles. Gujarat, well could be multiple reasons:
-a good stable power supply
-an excellent and clearly communicated ecosystem for availing benefits as a manufacturer or as a consumer
- Many small businesses which can claim depreciation benefits thus offsetting the higher upfront costs of an EV bs ICE
- Lastly, have you met a Gujju who would lose an opportunity to save money?

Jokes apart, these states are doing something right. Hope the others are taking note

FY 24

South states lead in EV adoption with Kerala topping the list in 2 and 4-wheeler segments, while North dominates the 3-wheeler segment.
