Porsche Macan EV undergoes Edmund's unofficial range test; 523 km on 1 charge

According to reports, Edmunds conducted an unofficial range test of the Macan EV prototype ahead of its global unveiling.

Porsche Macan EV global unveil on 25 January; Officially teased-macanev.jpg

The unofficial test was conducted at 70 mph (112 km/h) speeds, with the top trim of the upcoming Macan EV managing to return more than 300 miles (482 km) of range on a single charge. This is in line with Porsche's claims that every variant of the Macan EV will have a range of at least 311 miles (500 km) on the European WLTP cycle. The Porsche Macan EV is said to have a drag coefficient of 0.25 Cd, making it one of the most aerodynamic SUVs.

As per reports, Edmunds started with the fastest version of the Macan EV, which will reportedly be called the Macan Turbo. This top-spec trim is said to offer over 600 BHP but with the lowest range among the variants. However, the Porsche kept going well beyond the 280-mile trip originally planned. It covered 298 miles (480 km), and the Macan still had 7 miles of range left. The average speed recorded during the entire trip was 60 mph (96.5 km/h).

Edmunds also tested the base version of the Macan EV along the same trip, only to cover 325 miles (523 km). The base version of the Macan EV comes with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup.

The existing gas-powered version of the Macan is Porsche's best-selling model. The upcoming Macan EV will be sold alongside its ICE counterpart before the latter gets discontinued a year later.

The global unveil announcement doesn't reveal any other details of the upcoming Macan EV. Once unveiled, the Macan EV will be the second all-electric offering from Porsche, following the Taycan. The electric SUV will be the entry-level EV offering and is expected to be sold alongside its ICE version until the latter is discontinued sometime in the future.

The Porsche Macan EV will be underpinned by the VW Group's PPE architecture, which it shares with the Audi Q6 e-tron. The Macan EV will be offered in different variants, with the top-spec trim expected to have over 600 BHP.

Recently an unofficial test revealed that the top-spec Macan EV offers a real-world range of around 482 km, while the base-spec variant returns over 520 km on a single charge. All variants of the Porsche Macan EV will come with a 100 kWh battery pack with an 800-volt architecture. Porsche also claims a drag coefficient of 0.25 for the Macan EV.

The 2024 Porsche Macan Turbo Has 630 All-Electric Horsepower.

For the second generation of its big-selling small crossover, Porsche is going electric. Today it debuts in Macan 4 and Macan Turbo guises.
The German brand just unveiled its new EV crossover in two guises, the 402-horsepower Macan 4 and the 630-hp Macan Turbo. This is a big deal.

Underpinning the second-generation Macan is a platform co-developed with Audi. Called Premium Platform Electric (PPE), this platform uses an 800-volt electrical architecture and will make the basis for the upcoming Audi A6 and Q6 EVs, and likely, an all-electric Porsche Cayenne.

The battery uses Lithium-Nickel Manganese Cobalt cells arranged in 12 modules for a net capacity of 95 kWh (100 kWh gross). Porsche was the first automaker to make an 800-volt production EV with the Taycan, and this higher-voltage architecture allows for a reduction in copper usage and faster charging speeds. Find an 800-volt DC charger and the Macan can charge at up to 270 kW. If you plug into a 400-volt charger, the battery pack effectively splits in half and charges in parallel, reducing charge times significantly.

Both the Macan 4 and Macan Turbo use permanent-magnet synchronous motors at each axle, and the rear motor is rotated 180 degrees to ensure a slightly rear-biased weight distribution. In the Macan 4, they combine for 402 hp and 479 lb-ft, while in the Macan Turbo, you get 630 hp and 833 lb-ft of torque. (All those figures are achieved with “overboost,” which is only available for a limited time when using Launch Control.) Speaking of acceleration, Porsche says the Macan 4 can run from 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds, while the Turbo does it in 3.1 seconds. Top speeds are 136 and 161 mph, respectively.

The rear motor also ditches the two-speed gearbox used on the Taycan because Porsche was able to hit its top-speed and acceleration targets with just a gear reduction. Axing the multi-speed transmission also helps save weight and reduce drivetrain losses, both boons to overall efficiency.

Like the Taycan, however, the new Macan won’t offer a one-pedal drive mode, instead managing the vast majority of regenerative braking via the brake pedal. Depending on battery state-of-charge, the Macan EV can regenerate up to 240 kW energy in braking. EPA range figures have yet to be announced.

Porsche will continue production of the gas-powered, first-generation Macan for the US market for some time. Production of that model has ended for Europe over new EU cybersecurity regulations, but Porsche can still sell it here. That should ease the transition from gas to electric, but make no mistake, Porsche electrifying the Macan shows where the automaker is headed.

Rear looks ugly to me, the first gen pre facelift rear looked so good! This one somewhat looks like the Chrysler PT cruiser, don't think this will grow on me.
