The Volkswagen Group has reportedly begun work on localising its electric vehicle platform and powertrains in India. The new ‘born EV’ platform will be developed under the project codenamed ‘PEAK EV’.

According to media reports, VW plans to bring the 'MEB21G' platform to India. However, it will be heavily localized in order to make it cost-effective. It is expected to underpin multiple SUVs that will be manufactured at the company’s Chakan plant. While the exact details are still unclear, it is said that the focus is likely to be on the entry-level and mid-size SUV segments.

The first model based on the localized MEB21G platform is expected to be a VW-branded electric SUV, which will be followed by a more mainstream alternative from Skoda. It is expected to debut around 2026.

The PEAK EV project will require an investment of 1 billion euros. The carmaker is aiming to build 5,00,000 units per annum, for both domestic and export markets.

The VW Group currently offers electric vehicles from its high-end brands like Porsche and Audi in India. These are imported as completely built units (CBUs).
