Chinese smartphone maker, Xiaomi, has unveiled its first car, the SU7 - an all-electric sedan. The name SU7 is said to be an acronym for "Speed Ultra".

The new Xiaomi SU7 is said to be positioned as a direct rival to the Porsche Taycan Turbo in terms of performance. However, it will also come with intelligent driving features found in cars like the Tesla Model S. The SU7 even looks similar to its direct rivals from certain angles.



The four-door electric sedan comes with LED lighting all around, an active aero wing at the back, C-shaped LED taillights connected by a light bar, a stylish alloy wheel design and LiDAR tech. Inside, the SU7 will offer a host of connected tech, comfort features and driver assistance like autonomous driving. The display inside the car will use software & electronics from Xiaomi, which should allow the driver's smartphone to seamlessly integrate with the car's infotainment unit.



While the exact powertrain details are yet to be revealed, reports state that the Xiaomi SU7 could come with a 101 kWh battery (from BYD & CATL) and will be offered in single-motor & dual-motor configurations. The range is expected to be around 800 km, with the top-spec AWD variant reportedly packing 634 BHP. The car is also expected to be capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in just 2.78 seconds and reach a top speed of 265 km/h.

The exact details and the price will be announced closer to the time of launch.

I don't see the similarities between those two.
Honestly the headlights remind me of McLaren design and the tail lamps kinda resemble 2020 Sonata.

They could have done better by designing something new rather than ripping off rivals. This is Taycan from most angles ! Wondering what do they expect to gain out of doing something like this ? Copying is probably the worst possible way to build trust on a new product !

The Xiaomi SU7 is equipped with advanced lidar, radar, and cameras to enable self-parking.

It’s unclear if the parking garage used in the demonstration has been specially equipped to enable vehicles to park themselves like this or if the software of the SU7 was pre-mapped before the test. If the SU7 was able to navigate the parking complex without any prior mapping and relying solely on its sensors, then that would be quite impressive.

Xiaomi has launched its first car SU7 in China at a starting price of RMB 2,15,900 ($29,870 or Rs 25.3 lakhs) for standard variant. Pro variant is priced at RMB 2,45,900 (Rs 28.3 lakhs), Max variant is priced at RMB 2,99,900 (Rs 34.5 lakhs).

Very impressed!

It's one thing for BYD to be good at making cars, and as impressive as BYD has been, Xiaomi has gone ahead and pulled off a fast one - for predominantly an electronics company!

The only issue for me is how blatantly they've copied Porsche. If I can learn to be OK with that (for if there's one brand whose vehicles are worthy of copying, it's Porsche alright ), this vehicle seems to have it all :

• From the looks of it, the materials look very premium - will await for more hands on videos for further confirmation.
• The physical buttons are all there - such a welcome departure from all modern cars INCLUDING the likes of BYD.
• The ICE integration looks slick and so is the Apple-Xiaomi ecosystem integration.
• and the performance is downright MAD!!

Even if it can achieve 75-80% of Porsche's driving dynamics, it has done everything else on par to or better than a Porsche IMO.

BTW, I one for one feel the Taycan copy is very deliberate from Xiaomi - so much so that all I can now do is but compare it with a Porsche and seeing it possibly beat it in several areas while all of this coming at a fifth of Taycan Turbo S's price!!

Very clever indeed and overall truly impressed!

What incredible times we are living in in terms of technology and Automobiles!

P.S. - It is for this reason, I was sorely disappointed with the cancelation of Apple Car project. For all the naysayers that said that Apple won't be able to and while I too had my doubts, I was rooting for them to come up with something, anything - even a decent concept. Xiaomi has not only shown it but how!!

I get the feeling that just like commoditisation in the smart phone market more specifically Android smartphones, the commoditisation in the EV space has already started, given a rank outsider with no experience what so ever in making cars, can simply come out and offer such a competitive offering right out of the gate - on specs alone this is better than the best from Europe and when you include pricing, there is just no competition. Also puts into perspective the sad state of Indian EV manufacturers of which they are very few and have very very mediocre offerings and thats putting it lightly. They arent learning much by the way of R&D either since they simple import batteries and motors from China and call it a day.

Tesla's single minded focus on vertical integration, software and self driving makes even more sense now because they will be the differentiators going forward. European luxury makers are royally screwed, atleast their everyday offering like a electric 3 series or a class, which are supposed to do the volumes and they arent even out yet. Interesting times.

EV car engineering is a different ball game. The critical mechanical engineering associated with ICE engine and then overall design around heavy engine in front requires different approach. EV car with battery technology and tons of electronics in car control, safety and infotainment makes it more geared towards electrical and electronics focussed. A change from analog film photography to digital changed the landscape of whole camera industry, likewise expecting a total upside down of car industry in few years to come !!
