Re: Xiaomi SU7 electric car unveiled; To rival Porsche Taycan Turbo & Tesla Model S

Xiaomi to showcase its first electric car, the SU7 EV, in India tomorrow.

The event will be in Bengaluru.

Quote:
This showcase comes despite Xiaomi’s “no plans” statement for an immediate launch in India. This has sparked speculation that the company might be checking the waters in the Indian market, potentially paving the way for a future introduction. It could also be a way for Xiaomi to celebrate a decade of operations in India by showcasing its diverse product portfolio.
Xiaomi’s display of the SU7 goes beyond just showcasing a new car. It’s a strategic move to highlight their growing capabilities beyond consumer electronics. The event is expected to feature various household appliances and announcements regarding the company’s expansion into new product categories.

Xiaomi SU7 EV showcased in India – 10th anniversary celebration.

The SU7 was brought to India solely for showcase purposes. It is not for sale in India.

Xiaomi has showcased the SU7 all-electric sedan in India. The EV, which is already on sale in markets such as China, was shown on the occasion of Xiaomi’s tenth anniversary in India, at an event held in Bengaluru. Globally unveiled in December 2023, the SU7 represented the smartphone maker’s foray into the automotive industry and subsequently into the EV market.

The version of the EV that was showcased in India was the SU7 Max, equipped with a dual-motor setup, which cumulatively develops a peak 664 bhp and 838 Nm of torque. With launch control, the SU7 Max will clock 0-100 kmph in 2.78 seconds, 0-200 kmph in 10.67 seconds and hit a top speed of 265 kmph. The SU7 Max has a 101 kWh battery pack that delivers a range of up to 800 kilometres (CLTC). Xiaomi says the SU7 Max will regain 220 km of range with a five-minute charge, and 510 km of range with a 15-minute charge when plugged into an ultra-fast charger.

The SU7 features an impressively aerodynamic design, and has a drag coefficient of 0.195 Cd, making it one of the most aerodynamic cars in the world.

Few real world (non studio lighting) shots of the SU7.
This is the same one that was premiered in Bangalore a few weeks ago. It's now parked at a Tech park where Xiaomi is head quartered.

  • Looks smart from up-ahead.

  • There is a kink above the IRVM (looks like a roof scoop from a race car; but this one closed & smooth.
Possibly a radar / ADAS housing. Doesn't look ugly in anyway

Look good, even if it is a copy of other brands. That said, the glaring issue to not here is the fact that the vehicle was parked in a spot reserved for handicapped drivers. That in itself is regrettable to say the very least!

Is that watermark for real. Don't we have any standards regarding size and position. Really takes the life out of the pictures. But then a watermark on this car which is a sum total copy of many is an oxymoron!

Xiaomi lost $9,200 for every EV it sold.

Quote:
the brand could launch its second model in just two months
Quote:
The Chinese technology giant delivered 27,307 vehicles in the second quarter of the year.
In Q2, Rivian lost over $32,000 per car sold, while Ford’s electric division lost $47,600 for each EV built.
Analysts think Xiaomi could reach a breakeven point when it’s selling between 300,000 and 400,000 cars annually.
Quote:
Developing, building, and selling electric vehicles is an expensive business, and Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has found this out the hard way, losing millions with the launch of its SU7 sports sedan. However, on a per-vehicle basis, it’s doing a lot better than some more established brands.

Xiaomi’s automotive arm posted an adjusted loss of $252 million for the second quarter ending June 30. This represented its first-ever full delivery quarter. During April, May, and June, Xiaomi delivered 27,307 EVs to buyers in China and believes it can top 100,000 deliveries by November. Factoring in its total losses and the number of deliveries, Xiaomi has lost $9,200 for every car it sold.
Quote:
A second model will help Xiaomi on its path to profitability. This new model, tipped to be an SUV slightly larger than the SU7, could premiere before the end of this year before customer deliveries begin in early 2025. Given the demand for SUVs and crossovers, it could prove to be even more popular than the SU7 sedan.

Xiaomi SU7 outsells Tesla’s model 3 In China

Quote:
Breaking into a heavily contested EV market like China is no easy feat, but Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has done what many established automakers couldn’t: launch a first-ever electric vehicle that outsold the Tesla Model 3—at least in China. Sales data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) between April 2024 and January 2025 confirms that Xiaomi’s SU7 managed to edge out the Model 3, a major feat for the company’s automotive debut.

Production of the sleek SU7 began in April 2024, with customer deliveries starting shortly after. It enjoyed a very strong start, with no less than 30,000 examples sold across April, May, and June. In April, 7,058 units were sold, which was enough to surpass the 5,065 Model 3s sold during the same month. What’s perhaps most impressive is that demand for the SU7 steadily rose throughout 2024 and never failed to die off, as can often be the case with new EVs.

The Tesla Model 3 ended the April-June period with 38,446 units, easily eclipsing the SU7. Across July-September, the Tesla maintained its edge, with 52,052 examples finding new homes across the country. By comparison, 39,790 SU7s were sold during the same three months. Sales of the Xiaomi then surged in October, November, and December, easily eclipsing the Model 3.

Whereas Tesla managed to sell 52,241 Model 3s during this period, Xiaomi sold 69,697 SU7s. This included 20,726 in October, 23,156 in November, and 25,815 in December. Strong demand for the Xiaomi has continued into 2025 and 22,897 were sold in January. While that’s down on December’s figures, the Chinese New Year holiday period usually leads to a drop in vehicle sales. In January, Tesla sold just 8,009 Model 3s.

Overall, according to X user Troy Teslike, who cited official figures from the China Passenger Car Association, Xiaomi delivered 162,384 SU7s between April 2024 and January 2025, surpassing the 152,748 Model 3s Tesla sold in the same period.

Can Xiaomi Beat The Tesla Model Y?

The Chinese brand is also chasing after Tesla with its second model. In December, it previewed the new YU7, a direct rival to the Tesla Model Y. Like the SU7, it could undercut the Tesla on price while coming standard with more features and a more premium design.

Given how popular crossovers and SUVs have become in recent years, it’s entirely possible the YU7 could outsell the SU7. Whether or not it can top the Model Y is a different story. Last year, the Tesla was China’s best-selling new car with 480,309 examples finding new homes. Matching or exceeding that won’t be easy for Xiaomi.
