Re: Would you buy a Used Electric Car?

Hi - To me it depend on the EV. I will be happy to buy:

IONIQ 5 - Yes, if I get a used one for 28-30 lacs (around 30k KM done) at around mid / end of 2024.

BYD Atto 3 - Yes, if I get a used one for 18-20 lacs (around 30k KM done) at around mid / end of 2024.

MG ZS EV (2022 facelift) - Yes, if I get a used one for 13-15 lacs (around 30k KM done) at around mid / end of 2024.

Tata Nexon EV Max (earlier one or 2023 FL) - Will not buy even if I get it for 8-10 lacs.

Tiago EV & XUV 4OO & others - Will not buy at whatever price I get them.

I don't see quality EVs coming in 2024 and I don't think EV charging infrastructure will be good in next 3-4 years compared EV sales. Mostly likely EV charging will have similar problem CNG users are facing.

Beside, our business community (including Govt) is very greedy and may be public EV charging will be very-very expensive by end of 2024 or early 2025. Govt. may also bring EV charging specific electricity meter and slab which will be higher than domestic use (may be flat Rs.15/- per unit for EV charging at home).

Re: Would you buy a Used Electric Car?

@GoBabyGo, absolutely agree with you. We lack quality EVs currently and most on sale by Indian OEMs are inferior (reliability wise). I would also only consider Ionic 5, Atto 3 and ZS EV.

I think the main problem is Battery tech not being developed here in India. We need a lot of R&D in this area.

Re: Would you buy a Used Electric Car?

I would vote Yes as long as battery is under warranty. I think in future, ev manufacturers should allow buyers to pull up the battery health report and using that report, new buyer can take the best call.

Re: Would you buy a Used Electric Car?

Hi,

I own three car. Two ICE & one EV. We are talking about tech & maturity of an ev vehicle.
Two parts or rather three parts - motor, battery & controller and rest of the car.
Motor tech- The tech has been very old if you consider railway motor & other thing. Electric motor are some of the best efficient stuff there on planet. How many time you have replaced your fan. How is the total kilometre covered by any electric motor. We have our answers.
Battery- relatively new if you consider lithium based chemistry & an area of great discussion, here we have to take chance. I have seen many of the 10 year old Nissan Leaf battery being replaced for a reasonable price & will run for another 10 years if maintained well. In fact the range increased due to better & higher capacity. There are some minor adjustments in bms & controller what it is required. Keep the cost of replacing & refurbishment as around 30-40% of the car cost.
Rest of the car- that's the same as ICE counterparts. Same cost will get applicable.
Let's make a math.
I purchased a tiago ev top end approximately for 12 lakh. (Tata car are good but they sales & service network sucks. )
The same ice counterpart are available for around 8 lakh, so ideally I need to recover 4 lakh initially. Which can be done for around 50-60k kilometre. Any extra run will be a bonus from cost point of view.
Now based on battery charge cycle battery will be good for 180km x 2500. = 450000 km approximately although the warranty is around 160000. So even if I add all approximation for next battery replacement at 1.6 lakh kilometre, I would have recovered cost of battery twice from that angle from ice counterpart. There are people who have already used old nexon for 1.5lakh kilometre. , so let's assume in most of the case we would have recovered the cost of car atleast twice or thrice.

The biggest question comes that of range anxiety. Two parts there also.
1. Normal daily usage- works like cake walk including a distance of 120 km one side. No ice car can beat it even on driving comfort forget the range. If you are driving more than that then either you are in some job which requires more driving or you are not working. 😀
2. Highway usage- here I agree for a range anxiety. Keep a golden rule. 1. Prepare yourself to halt & recharge where ever is required. 2. Always consider last 20℅ as reserve. Recharge it as soon as you reach last 20% irrespective of no of kilometre covered. On ghat section keep the battery full & use it. Know your charging place & keep moving.

I still love my ICE car they are lovely and allowed me to drive, commute & have fun. In face anything under 1000km , I would prefer all time driving as compared to any public transport.
Will request people who are saying that tech is not mature, that is there everywhere & in every walk of life. Until we use them & help the scientists & engineer to mature it it will not be matured. So would suggest embrace the new tech ev while using the old loved ice cars, both are required.
I would vote yes if the vehicle assessment is good, rest everything is replaceable.

Yes, will consider buying a used EV. But only if the battery is still under warranty for atleast 3 more years.

A warranty is only as good as the response you get for it, when the need arises. Accounts by EV users both in India and abroad indicate that it is time consuming at best and nightmarish at worst. What's the point of having 3 years warranty, but ending up with the car spending months at the garage, with no updates? This has already happened to others, so it's not just about the warranty on paper, like it is, for ICE vehicles.

Yeah but of all the user experiences I've read on Tata or Hyundai electric cars, most users are getting their battery replaced under warranty without much questions asked. If I were to buy a 3 year or 5 year old ICE car, there won't be warranty remaining on a single part (ie if customer hasn't bought extended warranty). If that is an automatic ICE car then the fear of future repair costs will be even higher.

Re: Would you buy a Used Electric Car?

I might go for one provided its a known vehicle OR if its being sold at a good discounted price. But not at the atrocious prices quoted on olx nowadays.

Its quite a difficult task to assess physical damages to the battery. For many top-tier OEMs, a few inches of indent is considered enough of a reason to award a right-off. The sole reason being safety is a question mark and can't be assessed unless the battery module is taken apart.

Interestingly very few online portals give an option of choosing "electric" as the fuel type. Our own t-bhp classifieds doesnt have BYD, Inoiq, Kia EV6 as options either

Re: Would you buy a Used Electric Car?

Is there any data on the depreciation rate of an EV over its ownership period? Maybe from US since the market is more mature there? How does this compare with an ICE?

Re: Would you buy a Used Electric Car?

Someone recently told me that the EV’s depreciate like a falling brick. But there is no substantial data available in India as to the general thumb rule pricing of used EV’s.
I recently watched JayEmm on cars and The Fully Charged Show on the prices of used Kia EV6’s and suchlike in the UK. But those are not really indicative of our India context.

Truth is nobody is even really selling their current ev’s barring maybe E2Os or verified (which frankly aren’t good examples to begin with). Those EVs depreciate because of radical tech changes. So far, between Nexon EV 1.0 and 3.0, the only powertrain progress is lighter and efficient motor. All other changes are features or cosmetic.

The real deprecation comes when you go to sell an old 17L Nexon for 12L but the 12L buyer already has option of new punch at that price

People forget that the western market ev’s are mostly $50K+, almost premium segment — luxury even. And we know how luxury cars depreciate.

Even if ev’s do depreciate “like a brick” how does the avg non EV from same segment depreciate, is what we should be looking at.

In India, luckily we don’t have the lease model or in general selling cars barely after 3-4y

So most cars will only have residual value after say 10y, as do most 10y cars. There won’t be much difference between ICE hybrid or EV as those would have their own issues to deal with such as GRAP, 10/15y rule, ethanol blending increases making older cars prone to engine corrosion and long term issues with DPF for diesel. Many Camry hybrids listed on OLX have HV battery issues after just 70-80k km

While that generation of Camry didn’t have the current warranty, it remains to be seen how the hybrids which don’t have any battery cooling whatsoever, cycled more frequently than ev’s, and with the usual cost cutting that comes with localised models over global models like Camry.

Re: Would you buy a Used Electric Car?

Are there any real EV cars available in the used market?

Randomly I checked OLX and the results were:
State of UP : no ads
Whole of India: 9 ads, out of which 4 were not EV's.

My question why was this thread started? When the Nil or negligible use case.

Re: Would you buy a Used Electric Car?

Here is a real scenario.
When Nexon EV (2023 model, pre-facelift, long range) was available with 2.5-3L discounts, I evaluated the option of trading in my 2 year old and 30k run Nexon EV.
Tata guys told me that maximum value I can expect for my car is around 9-10 L. Hearing this I decided not to proceed and use my EV till it stops working!

Yes. Used EV makes sense. Especially low run Tata models !

Re: Would you buy a Used Electric Car?

Greetings to all,
Members please help me decide whether to buy a used NEXON EV Prime as our Secondary vehicle or not.

Use Case
1. The car will be used primarily by my dad for his trips from hospital to home inside our city only. That would be 30km daily
2. Some days will be used for travelling to nearby cities. 60 km thrice weekly.
We won’t do any long distance trips with the EV(we have other 2 ICE cars). Most of our trips with EV would be in radius of 50 km from home.

My father is also an Environment Lover. He regularly plants trees and also takes care of them.
All these factors led him to make a decision regarding choosing a EV.
We were then looking forward to finalizing a new Nexon EV MR.

Then an opportunity presented itself
My father’s colleague wanted to sell his 2020 Nexon EV Prime, 60000 km on ODO (because of some tax saving reason)
He went to cars24 and Tata, both of them said they do not buy used EVs. He couldn’t even get the car valued by them.
But he is now really keen to sell the car and is offering the car for ₹8 lakhs.

Seeing such Depreciation of the EV we dropped the idea of a new Electric Vehicle.
Since our running won’t be much (just average) to justify the need of EV but my father really likes the Comfort and convenience of a electric vehicle as well as the environment saving reason (I know it is contested)

So we began the search of used EV
Came across 2022 Nexon EV Prime,25500 km on OLX priced at ₹9.3 lakhs. Direct owner listing.
We thought that we can really benefit from the cheap upfront cost of a used EV since we can make do with a lower range of an EV.

So members please suggest are we looking in the right direction?
And should we proceed with the second option? Please share a checklist for buying a used EV
