BYD Seal and localized Atto 3 India launch delayed to 2024

According to a media report, Chinese EV maker BYD has pushed the launch of the Seal EV to 2024. The launch of the localized Atto 3 electric SUV has also been delayed.

The BYD Seal electric sedan was showcased at Auto Expo 2023, with the intention to introduce it by Q4 2023. As per the latest reports, that is unlikely to happen.

The BYD Seal comes with two battery options – a 61.4 kWh unit offering 550 km of range and an 82.5 kWh pack with a claimed range of 700 km (CLTC-cycle). The base single-motor variant develops 201 BHP, while the one equipped with a larger battery packs 308 BHP.

The dual-motor Seal is available with the larger 82.5 kWh battery pack. It has a combined output of 523 BHP, which enables the car to sprint from 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.

Speaking of the Atto 3, the carmaker is facing hurdles on the homologation front. This has delayed the introduction of the localized version of the electric SUV. A new version of the Atto 3 with an advanced motor is also said to be in the works.

Re: BYD Seal and localized Atto 3 India launch delayed to 2024

Does anyone how much of a price reduction can be expected with localisation? The Atto 3 is a great product. The current ex-showroom price is around 34lacs. It should force the Mahindras and others to stop dragging their feet with mature EV products.

Re: BYD Seal and localized Atto 3 India launch delayed to 2024

Since the rejection of the investment plan, I highly doubt that there will be any reduction in pricing. The sad state is there is no other product in this price range that is as refined as Atto 3.

Re: BYD Seal and localized Atto 3 India launch delayed to 2024

BYD Seal is unveiled in new plug-in hybrid version.

Targeted by a bold strategy, the BYD Seal is quickly becoming a family of products, which now includes Seal EV, Seal DM-i PHEV, Seal U (export name for the Song Plus) and its newest member, the Seal 06.

The BYD Seal 06 is a 5-seater vehicle with dimensions (length/width/height) of 4,830/1,875/1,495 mm, respectively, and the wheelbase is 2,790 mm. Depending on the powertrain option, the kerb weight is either 1,660 kg or 1,775 kg.

The Seal 06 is based on the DM-i hybrid platform and will have two powertrain variants with 120 kW (163 hp) and 160 kW (218 hp) electric motors. Both variants will feature the 1.5-liter internal combustion engine and 74 kW (100 hp) of maximum power developed in-house by BYD. The top speed of both variants is limited to 180 km/h.

The battery will be a Blade type with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry from BYD subsidiary FinDreams. Its capacity has not been revealed, but according to information, there will be two options with a capacity of approximately 10 kWh and 16 kWh, enough for CLTC ranges of 60 and 90 km, respectively.

But that's not all, because this new BYD Seal 06 will also have an all-electric version later on.

That is one killer looking sedan. If priced right, this can be a hit even if it is coming as an CBU.

It boasts of a drag coefficient of 0.219Cd that is among the best in the market.

Dealers have started accepting bookings unofficially for the BYD Seal EV sedan, which will be priced around Rs 50 lakh.

The wait for no-show 'hyped' Tesla continues.

There were talks of an official announcement of Tesla’s India entry at last month’s Vibrat Gujarat Global Summit but no announcement was made at the event.

Re: BYD Seal and localized Atto 3 India launch delayed to 2024

I can confirm that dealers are indeed taking pre-booking on Seal now. I have received the below pre-booking details from one of the dealers.

More than Seal, I really wanted a CKD Atto 3 first TBH with better pricing.

Went to the local BYD showroom to test drive the Atto 3. The sales representative confirmed bookings are open for Seal and will launch around April-May 2024. Expected price is 65L. This seems high when compared to the UK pricing. The Atto 3 is priced similarly in India and the UK. In the UK, Atto 3 is £39,000 and the Seal AWD is £49,000 (£1 = ₹104). On the other hand, the SR informed me that the Atto 3 price is going up by Rs. 60,000 from next week.

Autocar just confirmed the launch at around March 2024. Expected pricing 50 lakh. The AWD is coming to India with a 0-60 time 3.8 seconds. That’s ridiculously quick for the price you’re paying. However, my local dealer is very sure that only the RWD is coming to India.

BYD's Atto 3 faces a tough challenge with the recent price drop on the MG ZS EV. While the Atto 3 offers slightly more range, the ZS EV's significantly lower price makes it a more tempting option for many buyers.

The joint venture between JSW and SAIC further strengthens the appeal of the ZS EV, potentially boosting confidence in the MG brand compared to the BYD. A locally assembled (CKD) version of the Atto 3 could have helped level the playing field, but it remains to be seen how BYD will respond to the evolving market dynamics in India.

Yup, need a cheaper and competitive Atto3 than an even costlier car from BYD.
I am first in line for a <30L Atto3.

On the bright side, good to know they are sticking to their plans of releasing more cars.

Yep, me too. Given a chance to buy (if finances allow ) between EV6 and Seal almost 90% of people will opt for EV6 because of the KIA brand and personally, EV6 is a looker.

BYD should bring in the lower segment cars first to build the brand image. For example, Dolphin would be a big hit as there are no cars that can rival it ATM.

BYD Seal EV spotted in India; Bookings open unofficially

The BYD Seal EV has been spotted testing in India for the first time. The electric sedan from the Chinese carmaker was spotted testing on the outskirts of Chennai, suggesting an imminent launch in the Indian market.

Reports state that the BYD Seal EV could go on sale in the Indian market sometime in March 2024, with dealers already accepting bookings unofficially for the same. The BYD Seal EV was first showcased in India at the Auto Expo 2023. The car measures 4,800 mm in length, 1,875 mm in width and 1,460 mm in height.

In terms of design, the Seal EV features a coupe-like all-glass roof, flush-fitting door handles, split LED headlights with boomerang-shaped LED DRLs, a full-width LED light bar at the rear. Inside, the BYD Seal comes with a large 15.6-inch central touchscreen infotainment system, similar to that on the Atto 3. There is also a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a head-up display. Other features include a central rotary knob to select the various drive modes, dual wireless charging pads and speakers integrated to the door handles - similar to that seen on the Atto 3.

Globally, the BYD Seal comes with two battery pack options. The first is a 61.4 kWh pack offering 500 km of driving range, while the second is an 82.5 kWh pack with up to 700 km of range. The electric sedan can also be had with a single or dual-motor setup, paired with both batteries. Reports suggest the dual-motor powertrain could be the one to make its way to India. The electric powertrain produces 530 BHP and is said to be capable of sprinting from 0 - 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.

The BYD Seal is a direct rival to the Tesla Model 3 in international markets. In India though, it will take on the likes of the Kia EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Re: BYD Seal and localized Atto 3 India launch delayed to 2024

BYD Ocean series cars are all Born EVs and are much superior in packaging than anything available in India.

BYD Seagull is a car the size of the Tiago but with a wheelbase (and hence interior space) similar to a Nexon. Comes with a 30/39 KWh battery. Both those battery sizes are bigger than what is offered with the more expensive and larger Tata Punch.

BYD Dolphin is similar in dimensions to a Kushaq/Taigun but with the wheelbase longer than a Tiguan (next segment). Comes with a 45/62KWh battery. That larger battery is exactly the same as the one on the Atto3. Price of the larger battery version in top trim in Australia is the same as the top trim of the ZS EV 50KWh. The same price with a 25% larger battery capacity and more interior space.

Thankfully there is the MG4 RWD that can compete with the BYD Dolphin on both performance, price and efficiency combined with prettier designs or else it would have been a practical monopoly in these segments. And as far as the BYD Seal's 3.8 second 0-100 time is concerned, even that is covered by the MG4 AWD for about 20% less money.

All of these cars are already price competitive with competing ICE cars without even taking into account the running costs.

BYD is holding all the aces while MG has it in its crosshairs while Tata is not even in the picture internationally. Tata has just launched its 1st car with 400v architecture (Punch.EV) while the BYDs are sporting 800v architecture across the world. The rest haven't even started and are still wasting time on hybrids.

The govt can hold up the Chinese onslaught for only so long. MG is much more likely candidate to succeed in the current political scenario. In the meantime, Tata has to make sure it's offerings are at least as competitive in the lower segments or else it would be all work done for nothing. Even the Curvv is behind the curve on EV tech and innovation before it is even launched. The less said about the others, the better.

I really hope that Indian companies can catch up with the Chinese within a few years or it won't be a pretty picture for the country's manufacturing story.

I hope this will be the 2024 atto3 with 15" center screen + black color + continental tyres + BYD rear badging - else the price increase is senseless
