JD Power: Ownership costs of mass-market EVs are 18% higher than their ICE counterparts

According to data collected in JD Power's E-Vision Intelligence Report, over a 5-year period, the vehicle ownership cost of a premium EV is $287 more than its equivalent ICE-powered models. However, the price difference is significantly higher for mass-market vehicles. The report states that the cost of ownership of a mass-market EV is $9,529 or 18% more than their ICE counterparts over a 5-year period.

As an example, JD Power states that a Mercedes-Benz EQB has an average 5-year ownership cost of $72,107, while a comparable ICE model would cost $71,420; $687 less. However, a Ford Mustang Mach-E, which JD Powers considers a mass-market EV, is said to dent customers around $16,000 more than a comparable petrol-powered crossover.

The report states that this non-linear trend is due to the fact that automakers tend to introduce expensive halo products first before transitioning to affordable EV offerings. The data suggests that 76% of EV sales are occurring in the luxury market.

JD Power stated that carmakers will have to prioritise the electric compact SUV segment. Also, to achieve price parity, they will have to introduce more affordable models in the future.

Brent Gruber, Executive Director & Global Automotive MD, EV Experience at JD Power, stated, "Many premium brand dealers are passing through the EV tax credit on vehicle leasing, which makes the cost of their vehicles more favourable." On the other hand, he also mentioned how many mass-market EVs don't qualify for tax credits, and even if they do, dealers don't pass them on with leases - this is where they lose their competitive edge.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz EQB will go on sale in the U.S. summer 2022.

What an article- both of these cars are neither five years old nor the ownership costs are purchase costs. Resales values of EV - we will know in the coming years. As far as Tesla is concerned, those seem to hold pretty well, and so are the low maintenance charges besides low daily expenses, so I wonder how they are calculating ownership costs.

I tried checking True costs at Edmunds but could not. If anyone has better information, please do share.

What is the basis of calculation of the cost of ownership? No details are given on how they they have calculated these costs. I'm sure they have included the cost of the battery, which they assume will have to be changed in 5 years. Tesla's are running much longer on the original batteries.

Happens to all researchers who wish to be clairvoyants.

As for J.D. Power, they took pride in their brains and they named it "E-Vision Intelligence Report".

After 3 to 5 years, they will check the prospect of the report again and then simply rename it "E-Vision Report"

In Indian scenario, just compare Tiago EV and it's ICE counterpart.
Logically Tiago EV is cheaper as per the running costs, hence the ownership costs will also be cheaper even if battery is replaced, considering battery cost to be 40 % of the car's cost.

Another day another useless survey done with vested agenda to discredit EV cars. EV cars may or may not be future but there are no viable commercial alternatives to meet climate change agenda at present.

Ya EV is definitely cheaper than it's ICE version for the mass market Tiago. I paid around 3k for first service at 7500kms (included transaxle transmission oil change), around 1.8k for 15000 kms service (just wheel alignement, rotation etc). Can't imagine maintenance cost less than this. Running cost is almost 1/7th of petrol Tiago.

I don't know what's the point of this survey. It's definitely not valid for India.

Re: JD Power: Ownership costs of mass-market EVs are 18% higher than their ICE counterparts

I don't think this is a meaningful comparison to begin with. Most people I know tend to start with an approximate budget; no one says "I want to specifically buy and EQB, now let me decide between the EV and ICE version". So I would consider this a somewhat flawed baseline to begin with.

Beyond that, for a given budget range; EVs tend to be a lot more economical in my experience. Eg. I have a model X and I have spend maybe 1/5th the cost on electricity vs if it was and ICE car in a similar price bracket. With the fuel prices in California its a pretty meaningful difference.

Similarly from a maintenance perspective the only expense I have had is new tires. I do think the Model X tires wear out a lot quicker vs the usual ICE cars in the segment, but the for me the insane torque is fun so its worth it.

I probably spent similar total $$$ on my E class as I do on my Model X, despite the Model X being a segment higher in my opinion. My expenses on a X5 or Cayenne would have been much higher for everything - purchase price, fuel and maintenance costs.

Re: JD Power: Ownership costs of mass-market EVs are 18% higher than their ICE counterparts

That's probably a conservative estimate in the JD Powers report.

Starting with the purchase price, if one were to look at the price difference between an entry-level gas vehicle and the same manufacturer's entry-level EV across ALL segments including pickup trucks, the price difference can even be 2X + including dealer markups.

Operating costs can also vary significantly based on the utility rates prevalent in the state someone lives in - similar to gas prices. I live in a state that is known to have the highest utility rates in the contiguous United States - and has been so for decades. It will cost me 36% more on average to fully charge an EV at HOME compared to a state like Nebraska that has the lowest utility rates. https://quickelectricity.com/cost-of...-kwh-by-state/

Lot of US states will no longer authorize the sale of new gas vehicles from 2035. Hopefully, the tech and price points for EVs would have truly stabilized by then to actually be comparable if not lower than gas vehicles.
