1 in 4 Mercedes sold in India to be an EV in 4 years

Mercedes-Benz expects EVs to account for 25% of its sales in India in the next 4 years.

Currently, Mercedes-Benz offers two pure-electric models in India. These include the EQB and EQS. In the next 18 months, the carmaker plans to expand its EV portfolio in India by three times.

Mercedes will kick off its product offensive with the EQE electric SUV, which will be introduced later this month. It has been reported that three more EVs will be rolled out in the next 12-16 months.

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius said, "India is on the move. The combustion portfolio is much bigger than electric, but that will change significantly over the next few years. The future is going to be electric in India as well. If the market takes off even faster, we're going to be there." He was speaking on the sidelines of the 20223 IAA Mobility in Munich.

It is pretty obvious that legacy premium carmakers are deliberately making their ICE offerings underwhelming and insipid, to push the EV options. Especially in their ‘lower’ category cars, the sub 1cr space. It may be due to CAFE norms, it may be because they make higher margins with EVs, may be because they see higher potential for continued revenue through subscriptions.

Fact is that between ever increasing asking prices, stagnant or degrading powertrain option and the massive improvement in cars in the 30-50L rupee space, ICE powdered premium cars can only play the badge card. Nothing else. EV technology is the only possible differentiator.

15000 cars sold in India vs 750,000 sold in China last year. India is nothing for the big 3.

This definitely is a huge factor. EV's have a huge potential for manufactures to make money off customer post sales. Unlike with ICE, customers will be bound to official repairs and subscriptions due to the nature of it. Right to repair in the automobile sector will become a bigger problem in the coming years.

Believeable target, but where the luxury carmakers will really face competition is from the mainstream brands who are moving upmarket. Just look at the Ioniq 5 & Kia EV6. These are truly world-class products that give similarly priced luxury EVs a run for their money.

A sale is a sale & ICE cars today form 95% of sales for these guys. They won't intentionally kill their ICE products or make them underwhelming. Whether petrol, diesel, hybrid or EV, carmakers will sell the customer whatever he / she wants.

Truly. And the Indian luxury car market isn't growing either. China, in comparison, is HUGE!

Still debatable because they don't require expensive services & maintenance. Even stuff like brakes have longer intervals. No oil changes etc.

True, but then almost every service, repair or maintenance on an ICE can be done outside of OEM garages, right? With subscription models & the nature of EV's going, manufactures can essentially lock customers to the OEM ecosystems.

Anyway, I guess time will tell
