Foxconn working on a small EV platform for India & Thailand

Taiwan-based electronics giant, Foxconn, is working on a small electric car for India and Thailand. A standardized EV platform for a small battery-powered car is currently being developed by the company's EV unit "Mobility in Harmony" (MIH).

According to MIH CEO, Jack Cheng, the company is willing to collaborate to build a new 3-seater EV. It will be aimed at the corporate delivery fleet market and could be priced between US$ 10,000 and US$ 20,000. MIH is already in talks with convenience stores, car rental and courier companies, ahead of the car's unveiling set for the Tokyo Motor Show in October.

Cheng also revealed that the new EV is likely to be manufactured in India or Thailand. "You build where the potential market is. In India or Southeast Asia, you have a huge volume opportunity right now," he added. Cheng described India as a potential "emerging power for the next generation" in the EV sector.

MIH plans to begin production of its 3-seater EV in about 18-24 months following the unveiling of the prototype. The company also has two other models in the pipeline - a 6-seater EV is scheduled for 2024 and a 9-seater in 2025.
