Audi has been working on an advanced lighting system which will debut on its upcoming Q6 e-tron SUV. The new lighting technology will come with two features that have never been seen before on production models; the first is the ability to provide specific warning signs, and the other is to offer 'bespoke signature' to each driver.



As per reports, the new Q6 e-tron will get 61 individual segments in its digital daytime running lights. The tail lights will feature 6 OLED tiles, each containing 60 segments, making up 360 individual elements. This allows the Q6 e-tron to have up to eight different lighting signatures. The SUV with the new-gen OLED lighting system will also get what Audi calls "Dynamic Active Light Function", which helps with the 'Communication Light' feature. This communication function introduces a red triangular warning symbol, which in combination with the hazard lights, warns other motorists behind of an obstruction ahead. The obstruction itself is detected by the car or via Audi's cloud-based road monitoring system.

The communication light also displays the letter 'A' whenever the Intelligent Park Assist feature is activated on the Q6 e-tron.

Werner Thomas, Audi Lighting Project Manager, stated, “We have opened discussions with regulatory authorities on providing more symbols, including dynamic symbols that flash or strobe for additional effect.”

Seriously? I would welcome the letter M being displayed when there is a moron behind the wheel though!

But seriously, I hope the regulators keep things as they are. Lights on car are for safety. Once a car has brake light, reverse light, indicators and normal day/lights I don’t see any other types of lights, letters or whatsoever adding anything from a safety perspective.

Can you imagine what Werner’s resume would look like: Last job: inventing useless and probably very annoying lights for some rich gits!

Oh dear! Millions don’t know the road signs they should know as required by the law, and, here we have Audi, trying to add more symbols to this list! Good luck

Frankly if you have so many elements then let the user put whatever they want on it, including their name - its basically an LED screen at that point.

The existing Q8 E-Tron and its previous variant's headlights have 1.3 Mn (yes that is correct, 1.3 million!) pixels that allow it to project some graphics on start/stop, including the Audi and E-tron logos. So I guess they want to carry over the same to the tail lights just because they can

I'm not talking about this particular car but I don't know where all these are getting at. Just hope that the tail light section doesn't become another LED screen with whatever text or image people want to display. It'll be a nightmare for drivers behind the car. I used to love Audi's DRLs and LED tail lamps in their previous versions but their recent models don't look classy or timeless like before.

Maybe it can project the words "Use the Dipper" to convey my feelings to the drivers who are perennially on High Beams and tailgating me.

In my opinion, Audi designers are asked to make minimal changes to the classic Audi design. If they try anything new, they are probably told to stand in the corner and face the wall, or given detention, where they are made to write "I will never make a revolutionary design, ever, since evolutionary design is enough change" or words to that effect, and sent home with a remark in their handbooks. The only area where they are allowed some creative latitude is the lights. Come on, let them have some fun! :-)

Alternatively, we can install High Beams on the back and give them a taste of their own poison.

This is not a new thing. Decades ago I remember US authorities not approving something similar with different brightness level to indicate emergency braking or so. Maybe they wont approve it now !

They can as well give a keyboard where you can punch what you want to tell the other guys on road.
