After the Comet, MG now plans to bring another affordable EV - the Yep SUV

MG has been planning to bring in the Baojun Yep, a small electric SUV, to India for a while. It looks like that plan is one step closer to being completed as MG recently filed a design patent for the Yep in India. The Yep will be rebranded as an MG, and will be the second rebranded Baojun in India after the Hector which is a rebranded Baojun 530.

The Yep is only 3.3m long and sports a design that may remind some of the 3-door Suzuki Jimny. The Yep is powered by a single motor that sends 67hp and roughly 140nm to the rear wheels. It features a 28.1kWh battery that is capable of delivering about 300km of range, which is quite a high figure for a cheap EV.

When it comes to features, you get everything you mostly would expect from a modern funky urban runabout - LED headlights, DC fast charging, twin 10.25in screens for your instrument cluster and infotainment screen - but you also get what SAIC calls the first ‘car-watch’ in the industry. It’s effectively a small smartwatch-inspired screen on the rear of the Yep that can display the time, messages and other graphics. Interestingly, the Yep also features a full leather interior named the ‘Joy Box’.

Prices in China for the Yep start at 79800 Yuan, which is roughly 9.13L rupees.. One can safely assume that MG would price this above the Comet due to all the extra tech, hence expect this car to be in the ballpark of around 10-11 lakh rupees.

What about the Yep’s name in India? Like the Comet, it’s unlikely that the Yep will carry its Chinese-market name, which in the Comet’s case was the ‘Air’. Based on MG’s past streak of using aircraft inspired names, I’m going to go with the name ‘Cadet’, taken from the name of the 1930s Avro Cadet used by the British RAF. This, I feel, is the name that best suits the Yep but I don’t work for MG India and can’t really predict anything, so we’ll just have to wait and watch.

A good looking version of the Comet and an ‘SUV’ to boot. Should do better than its predecessor.

Hopefully the ride quality is better on this one.

Looks good, love the sudden onslaughts of EV’s. Hope it has bigger tyre size than the Comet.

Looks good in the pics. Even though it looks "magnified" in the pics shared here, in the real world it will be somewhat closer to the Suzuki S-Presso.

GM’s Baojun Yep Plus revealed with five doors and 401km range (CLTC).

Quote:
The Baojun Yep Plus five-door SUV from the SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) joint venture was revealed in China. It will launch in Q1 this year with a 75-kW electric motor, a 150 km/h top speed, and a CLTC range of 401 km. Let’s get to know this model better.

Quote:
A small three-door electric cross with a look in the style of the frame Suzuki Jimny in the range of the Chinese brand Baojun (part of the joint venture of General Motors and SAIC) appeared last year. The English name of the model is Yep, the local name is Yueye. In the homeland of the brand, sales started in the spring. It would seem that the SUV is doomed to success, because it combines two popular trends in China at once - compact electric cars and brutal design. However, Baojun Yep never became a hit: according to local specialized media, from May to December 2023, the model sold 14,683 copies. For comparison, the Geely Panda Mini city car found more than 15,000 owners in November alone. And against this background, a five-door modification of the Baojun Yep was announced: the stretched version was assigned the Plus prefix.
The length of the five-door crossover is 3996 mm, width - 1760 mm, height - 1726 mm, wheelbase - 2560 mm. Dimensions of the three-door Baojun Yep: 3381/1685/1721 mm, distance between the axles - 2110 mm.

China has its own version of the well-known Suzuki Jimny 5-door. It is called Baojun Yep Plus made by SGMW, SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture. Its closest rival is the recently launched Suzuki Jimny 5-door, made in India. The YEP is fully electric; the Jimny uses ICEs.

It surely looks like a Jimny, but the 4x4 is what makes the 'Jimny' the Jimny. I haven't seen any evidence of Yep Plus having a four-wheel drive.

Any idea when MG is gonna launch the MG4 EV in India?

Looks stunning and has gathered good reviews from the UK and rest of Europe.

The 2 doors Yep looks more appealing and appropriate, being different and compact will attract youngsters.

Looks inspired by Ford Bronco.
