Mr.Rajapakse ruined Sri Lanka overnight with a similar decision. He listened to an Indian NGO and banned chemical fertilizers ostensibly to "go green", but in reality to cut down on SL's import bill. Crop yields plummeted dramatically with the use of organic fertilizers and they're in a very sorry state right now. They can't produce enough food to feed their own, leave alone export Tea or anything as they once used to.

India's policy makers are on a similar trajectory where they believe ICE cars to be public enemy #1, while doing nothing about several addressable sources of actual air pollution. If we're unlucky enough, some states will ban ICE vehicles overnight (including transport vehicles). And then we can see the Indian economy tank and burn, the way SL has suffered.

Re: Chandigarh to pause petrol & diesel car registrations in December '23 | ICE 2-wheelers in July

The local administration has been sleeping for years over the issues of preparing the city for the ever increasing traffic and the resultant problems. They have just been interested and grabbing more and more taxes as a result of the burgeoning vehicle sales in the city. All they have done to accommodate traffic is to widen the roads where they could. There has been no plans for a ring road type of system which if in place can save motorists from stopping at traffic lights every 300-400 metres. As a city resident since decades, it was so glaring - the transition from a quiet, open roads to this mess that they have created.

The sudden limitation to ICE vehicles registration is just their way off over correcting for the time they have lost due to their greed and slumber. They know the people are not so forthcoming with replacing their gasoline vehicles with EV's due to several reasons. However this half hearted attempt by them to restrict vehicle numbers in the city is not going to help much as the two satellite towns Mohali in Punjab & Panchkula in Haryana is where a large part of the population stays and regularly commutes to the city. If they prohibit registration of ICE vehicles in Chandigarh, people will flock to Mohali and/or Panchkula and buy there instead. The MV tax is slightly more compared to Chandigarh but will hardly be a deterrent to a motivated buyer.

The governments hubris in slapping EVs on car buyers looks more like a tax collection action rather than an environment friendly gesture. They are trying to outrun the developed countries here where the infrastructure is in place for acceptance of EV's & where people are more receptive to contribute towards the environment protection. Here in Mohali there is not a day where there is no unscheduled power outage. How can the govt expect people to just be driven like a herd of pigs towards the EV sty? Their enthusiasm is unwarranted and is not based on ground reality.

Re: Chandigarh to pause petrol & diesel car registrations in December '23 | ICE 2-wheelers in July

Hello fellow members, I have a query which remains unresolved. Kindly help

Are Diesel Vehicles older than 10 Years, registered in other States (like Uttarakhand) allowed to ply in UT of Chandigarh. Reason I am asking is, that my car is diesel and over 10 years old.

If not, I will need to buy a new car for solely this purpose.

Regards

Absolutely, Chandigarh is the most friendly city for old vehicles. Not uncommon to see 20-year-old cars being driven. After 15 Years, one has to mandatorily clear fitness tests every 2 Years I think until 20 and thereafter every year. And the inspectors are pretty strict, not allowing even alloys on such cars.
