Tesla's Model S Plaid has set a new track record at the Nurburgring Nordschleife to reclaim the record for the fastest production electric vehicle. The Tesla Model S Plaid completed the 20.82 km lap in 7:25.231; beating the previous lap record set by the Porsche Taycan Turbo S by more than 8 seconds.



The record-setting Model S Plaid was equipped with the 'Track package', which offers new tyres, brakes and a higher top speed capable of exceeding 200 mph (322 km/h). During the record attempt, the Model S Plaid with the track package reached a top speed of 179.5 mph (289 km/h).



Tesla first beat Porsche's lap record in 2021 by registering a time of 7:35.579 - 7 seconds faster than that of the Taycan. Porsche took back the crown last year with its Taycan Turbo S fitted with a "performance package", beating the record time by 2 seconds. Now, the Model S Plaid has reclaimed the record again.

A couple of years back, Elon Musk set ambitious goals for Tesla at the Nurburgring. He stated that the company was working on achieving a lap record of under 7 minutes.

I follow a journalist called Misha Charoudin on instagram who generally drives a lot of cars (modded and stock) on the Nordschleife. He did mention that the high negative camber at the rear makes it look like the car had an aftermarket suspension to achieve the feat.

The QV ran a 7:32 around the 'ring (7 seconds slower) in 2016. Tesla's approach to a Nürburgring run is totally different from how Alfa Romeo did it with the Giulia QV. Alfa didn't have a big team, multiple cars, or racing overalls— they just slapped on a couple of cameras, the driver who put on a helmet and drove the lap.

Most interesting part of this whole thing is the steering wheel of the Tesla they used to set this record. It's a normal steering, not the "yoke" they ran an entire advertisement campaign on how it is "much better than a normal steering wheel for sporty performance"

New Porsche Taycan buries the Tesla Model S Plaid with 7:07 ring lap record.

A 'pre-series Taycan' has set a new standard for electric performance sedans, beating the Tesla Model S Plaid by a whopping 17 seconds.

According to Porsche, a video of the drive will be released in mid-March. That will likely coincide with more information about the car itself as well as a mid-cycle refresh for the entire Taycan range.

Porsche must have spent millions in engineering for the new model to beat the Tesla Plaid.

Tesla will just make some software changes and it will soon beat the 7:07 record. That's the flexibility & customization of a Tesla platform.

Let's see how soon Musk will incorporate this change to beat the Tacan (yet, again).
