Indian Army's all-electric Maruti Gypsy spotted

An all-electric version of the Maruti Gypsy has been spotted testing for the first time. What's interesting about this vehicle is that it's being developed by IIT Delhi and Tadpole Projects, in collaboration with the Indian Army.

On the outside, the electric version of the Gypsy looks identical to the regular Army-spec Gypsy. The only way one could identify it as an EV is by the green license plate and the decals on the body. Around 10 cars have been converted into electric as part of a pilot project.

The Gypsy EV uses a 21.7 kWh, 72 Volt battery pack that is said to offer a maximum range of 120 km. The car can reach a top speed of 70 km/h and the battery can be recharged in around 9 hours by plugging into a 15A socket.

Re: Indian Army's all-electric Maruti Gypsy spotted

I think the EV Gypsy with its battery and home grown wiring and circuitry will very probably not be able to manage serious off road and water fording and all as will be required by the Armed forces. The EV Gypsy will probably find more use as local transportation or for ferrying officers and soldiers and all.

Considering that the Gypsy is 15 years old (08 in the number plate shows the registration date), and it's running in Delhi, I wonder if this is a pilot project to retain the vehicles which are used for patrolling by the Military police, instead of scrapping them.

I just came across this video posted by AutoCar today. And it is an interesting concept. Problem is the price of conversion at Rs 8 lac is very high.

I was under the impression that Hawk EV (Bangalore) is doing the conversion. Maybe the army was evaluating multiple vendors for the conversion.

Overall the conversion market is dead due to the launch of low budget EVs.
