Anything but....... if one can accuse the current dispensation of anything, then it's that they drive a very hard bargain. Remember Tesla left the first time after the govt. refused to budge, this is a company that gets a red carpet welcome everywhere along with tremendous benefits thrown in to get the investment. The Indian government on the other hand showed no such desperation. What is very evident especially in our defence acquisitions is that they have no qualms in delay as long as the best deal is achieved..... this approach has been both a boon and bane.

Here.We.Go.Again!

I am glad Elon has not put a timeline to it as everytime he has, he has had to eat his own words.

However, this time it seems more likely but not very soon, i'd say. If manufacturing is the way forward, it will take Tesla 2-3 years to get the first car rolling out.

Perhaps, they will be allowed to bring in 2500 cars per year at a lower CBU duty if investments are made.

I will only believe it when I see it. A lot is done in the name of "optics", considering we have elections next year.

Tesla to discuss factory plan for new $24,000 car with India commerce minister.

Quote:
Tesla has expressed an interest in building a factory in India that would produce low-cost electric vehicles (EVs) for the local market and for export, adding that the company had indicated that it would be for the new vehicle.
The meeting with the commerce minister would be the highest level discussions between Tesla and the Indian government since June.
Quote:
The 2 million rupee ($24,000) EV Tesla representatives were said to have described in discussions about a potential Indian plant would be 25% cheaper than its current lowest priced offering, the Model 3 sedan which sells for the equivalent of just over $32,200 in China.

I would not believe a word Musk says till an official agreement has been signed for land purchase for the factory.

Re: Tesla executives to visit India & meet PMO officials

A 20 lakh rupee Tesla in India? Hard to believe. Is it really possible.

It will straight away kill market of Tata, MG, and BYD EVs, and dominate the market, it will kill others even before they get started.

Re: Tesla executives to visit India & meet PMO officials

Indonesia could compete with India in the run for the Tesla's small car project.

Quote:
India could face some fierce competition, with top officials from Indonesia also said to be in negotiations with the US electric-car company.
Quote:
Indonesia is pushing to become an electric-vehicle hub for manufacturing, with Chinese company CATL – the world's largest battery maker – and South Korean car giant Hyundai already establishing manufacturing facilities in the country.

As previously reported, it is believed Mazda is also being lured by Indonesian officials.
Both India and Indonesia are right-hand-drive markets themselves, with Mexico being a left-hand-drive market.

If the reports out of China are true, then Tesla will want to lock in a location for its next factory as soon as possible in order to begin manufacturing of its small car by 2025 or 2026.

Re: Tesla executives to visit India & meet PMO officials

Two senior Tesla executives discussed the company’s plans to enter India with officials from the country’s investment promotion arm in New Delhi, two people with direct knowledge of the matter said, the latest in a series of high-level talks. The U.S.-based executives – senior public policy and business development executive Rohan Patel, and a vice president for supply chain, Roshan Thomas – are currently in New Delhi and met officials from the Invest India agency, the two sources said, declining to be identified as the discussions were private.

Re: Tesla executives to visit India & meet PMO officials

India asks Tesla to copy Apple in pairing Chinese, Indian suppliers. Tesla is yet to take that decision.

Quote:
Tesla executives informed the Indian government that it would like to have some of its vendors from China set up base locally to boost its supply chain
Quote:
officials told Tesla that granting approvals for wholly-owned Chinese companies in India could be difficult due to intense scrutiny of Chinese firms since a 2020 border clash between the two countries.
But Chinese suppliers could be critical if Tesla were to establish a plant in India and keep costs in check for a cheap EV. India does not have local suppliers for components such as battery cells, with even India's largest EV maker, Tata Motors, importing them from China.

Re: Tesla executives to visit India & meet PMO officials

It is advantage Tesla as Chinese automakers face heat in India. But it is not easy for Tesla without Chinese suppliers to contain costs.

China's BYD has been stopped cold by increased scrutiny from New Delhi.

The result could be an opening for Tesla to negotiate terms for an entry to the world's third-largest auto market without the competitive threat from BYD that it faces in other emerging markets, like Thailand.

India suggests Tesla on Chinese suppliers setting base but outrightly rejected the same for BYD.
Quote:
Tesla, too, has Chinese suppliers that have helped it slash production costs at its Shanghai factory and it now wants to bring them to India - where it appears to have an upper hand in talks with New Delhi.

India has told Tesla it will allow its Chinese suppliers into the country if they forge partnerships with local firms, just like Apple did. But at the same time, India is hesitant on BYD's $1-billion plan even though that too was proposed as a partnership with a domestic engineering firm.

Re: Tesla puts India plans on hold after failing to secure lower import taxes

Advantage Tesla:

With Tesla push, India mulls import tax cut if EV makers build locally

Quote:
The policy being considered could allow automakers to import fully-built EVs into India at a reduced tax as low as 15%, compared to the current 100% that applies to cars which cost above $40,000 and 70% for the rest,

Quote:
Tesla pushes for India EV import tax policy change
Proposes duty tax cut for EV makers who commit to invest
India considering plan, wary of impact on local players
Tesla has expressed interest in India plant, cheaper EV

If such a policy is adopted, it could amount to a drastic reduction in the cost of imported EVs that local carmakers have been keen to avoid. It could also open the door for global automakers, beyond Tesla, to tap the world's third-largest car market where sales of EVs are less than 2% of total car sales, but growing rapidly.

Re: Hyundai Ioniq 5 Review

What is with this upcoming government policy of reducing import tax to 15% from 100%. Will this impact us also ? Being an early adopter cannot be a sin and they should pass on the reimbursement claim if this happens for all EVs above USD 40,000. This will be a major loss to the early adopters if they are not given this benefit when this policy comes into existence.

This has been refuted by the finance minister today

Excerpt from the article -

Quote:
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday said that there is no proposal before the ministry to lower import duty on electric vehicles. A Reuters report earlier in the day claimed that India is working on a new electric vehicle policy that would slash import taxes for automakers that commit to some local manufacturing
