World's top-selling BEVs of 2022; Tesla Model Y tops the list, BYD Atto 3 in 5th

According to reports, the Tesla Model Y was the world's top-selling battery electric vehicle (BEV) of 2022.

The Model Y registered a massive 91% increase in sales compared to 2021 with 747,500 units of sales last year. The electric SUV even beat its small sibling, the Model 3, which came second. Tesla sold 482,200 units of the Model 3 in 2022 - a 3% decrease from its sales in 2021.

The two Teslas were followed by the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV in third position, with 443,400 units of sales. The BYD Dolphin came in fourth with 205,200 units of sales - a massive 916% increase from 2021. Completing the top-5 was the BYD Atto 3, which sold 180,600 units globally.

Chinese EVs dominated the top-selling list, with BYD QIN, GAC AION Y, GAC AION S and BYD Han completing the list. The only European model on the list was the Volkswagen ID.4, which sat below the Atto 3 with 175,600 units of sales.

There is only one market, China, where all these 10 cars are sold, and this market will compel reluctant manufacturers like Toyota, BMW, Honda and others to embrace EVs.

If you look at other countries too, you will see that people want good EVs, not cheap or barebones ones like the e-C3 or Reva. Two Teslas, an Atto 3 & the VW ID4 in the Top 6 are an attestation to that. In India as well, many premium EVs outsell cheaper competition.

In 2022 in the USA, a car like the Mustang Mach-E outsold the Bolt EV.

Model Y becoming the world's best-selling BEV is not a big deal but it has become the 4th best-selling passenger car in 2022. Along with Model 3, two Teslas occupied the 2 spots (4th and 10th) in the top 10 best-selling cars list in 2022. Also, this is despite huge price increases in 2022. Model Y is on track to become the best-selling car in 2023 based on the Q1 deliveries, increased production, and lower prices.

Also, it's interesting to see that both Model Y and Model 3 sales are more evenly distributed across 3 major geographical areas as shown in the above table.

That is true with anything when tech is relatively new.

Early adopters will want the best products out in the market and are willing to pay a premium for it. The average person who buys a product once it is well-established, will buy something that suits their budget.

Few people were willing to spend to get an iPhone 15 years ago! Today, many people are happy with a Xiaomi phone costing INR 15k or a Samsung costing INR 25k. EVs are still in very early stages and have not reached maturity yet.

Woah those are some serious numbers. And it is at number 3

I did not realise Tesla has grown so big. And with their FAT profit, they should be in a league of their own soon.

Look at the 3rd car in the list guys!, it's the MG COMET EV, which many have been forecasting as disaster!

Tesla Model Y Was The World's Best-Selling Car In Q1 2023.

This is a significant bit of news for the auto industry. According to JATO data compiled for Motor1, the Model Y was the first electric car to lead global sales for a period.

Data collected for the first quarter shows the Tesla Model Y in the lead with 267,200 units sold. That's an increase of approximately 69 percent from the same period last year. The Model Y performed strongly in China, its core market, in the United States where it's up 68 percent, and in Europe, where it became the top-selling vehicle.

The Toyota Corolla is less despite sales figures including all available body types: sedan, wagon, and hatchback. The Corolla, which has been one of the most popular cars in the world for years, recorded downward-trending sales of 256,400 units. That includes a 29 percent drop in China and a 10 percent decline in the United States.

Suspect the success of the Model Y is a combination of factors - the rise of the battery EV as the preferred power train choice for most users, and the superiority of the Model Y over any comparable product.

The traditional (or should I say legacy) auto OEMs have the their task cut out to adapt quickly. I suspect that those who try to “preserve jobs in their supply chain” by delaying the move to full fledged battery EVs are doomed to failure. Japan screwed up and lost its edge in electronics over the last 2 decades, the next decade could see them left with the carcass of their auto industry unless they change their tack now. In fact it may already be too late for them.

Couldn't agree with you more. And, they (especially Toyota) comes up with all kinds of excuses why EV is not the way to go. They are peddling hybrids instead. For the love of God, I don't understand how those who are wary of battery pack of EVs are buying hybrids which has both, a battery pack AND an engine. They WILL end up maintaining both. It's only matter of time when it happens. Not if. Looks like people will buy anything if Toyota makes. Nexon wearing a Toyota badge would have probably sold 10,000 units of EV alone.

Hybrid Car technology is a tested and proven technology over decades.

A good hybrid car like the Toyota Prius, Toyota RAV4, Chrysler Pacifica or Mitsubishi Outlander are very reliable & cost less to maintain than a conventional Petrol/Diesel car. Here are the reasons why:

1) The gas engine shuts down when the car is idling, as well as driving at low speeds when the electric motor takes over. That means there's less wear and tear on the engine. On smaller hybrids, especially, oil changes are recommended at 5,000 miles (8,046 kilometers) rather than the 3,000 miles (4,828 kilometers) that mechanics recommend for similar gas cars.

2) The hybrids' regenerative braking system and the lower heat involved means that brake pads and brakes tend to last much longer, compared to similar gas cars.

3) A lot of Hybrid cars have a Battery & Powertrain Warranty of 8 yrs / 1,60,000 kms (whichever comes earlier). Post warranty period it would cost Rs 2.5 Lacs to replace them. However, given how reliable the cars are, you can expect to put many more miles in them for many more years, with little maintenance compared to a 2nd-hand conventional gas car that has run for >8 yrs.

If you still don't agree with me, you can ask any of your friends/relatives in the US what they think of hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius. I believe most of them will say it's a very reliable car & it costs very less to maintain compared to a conventional gas car.

Now, I will agree that fully Electric Cars are much cheaper and more reliable compared to both Hybrid & conventional gas cars, but your statement of Hybrid cars being worse and difficult to maintain as it has both Battery Pack & Gas Engine is wrong, IMO.
