USA: 8 of 10 best-selling Electric Cars have over 300 miles / 483 km of range

According to reports from the US Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (part of the Department of Energy), American car buyers prefer EVs with more than 300 miles (483 km) of range.

The report released the list of top-10 best-selling new EVs in 2022, of which only two had a range of less than 300 miles. Reports stated that, on average, the vehicles on the list had the longest possible range of 320 miles (515 km).

The Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3 occupied the top 2 positions on the list, with 228,312 units and 196,503 units of registrations in 2022. The Model Y has a claimed range of 330 miles, while the Model 3 offers 358 miles on a single charge. Also, 4 of the top 5 were Tesla Models, with just the Ford Mustang Mach-e beating the Model X and Model S to occupy the third position.

The Chevrolet Bolt EUV in sixth, and Volkswagen ID.4 in ninth, were the two EVs without a 300-mile range offering. The Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Rivian R1T completed the top-10 list in 7th, 8th and 10th place.

In India, I think 400 km will be getting over the "mental block". We already have ~300 km EVs today, but for the mass market, I think 400 km will stop them from sitting on the fence.

400-km is more than enough for urban cruisers. It's also more than enough for the typical Indian road-trips (one-way).

I still see an issue with the charging infrastructure (lack of) in our country. Yes longer range is preferable for mental ease of owning an EV. However, to have a longer range, typically the battery capacity will be higher and due to which charging time would be higher. Countries like the US have fast chargers installed at an individual's house or along the freeway. We don't really many fast charging options currently.

I think in states with good road infrastructure like TN, we need 600-650 km range. For example, Tirunelveli to Chennai is doable in 1 day, within 8-10 hours (630 km)which most people do it nowadays.

Hi GTO, can we have a poll on how many highway / long distance travel BHPians do per year (their last 5 years data) and what is our city / highway drive percentage a year (mine is 98% city).

This may give us a real idea whether EV not suitable for highway is correct or just mental block.

TN also has high-quality charging infra already in place thanks to Zeon. Recently did a Bangalore - Tanjore trip. Roughly 1300 KMs and it was a breeze.

Typically a 600km trip (8-10hrs) would include a lunch or tea break of about 30-45mins. This is just enough time to topup from 20% to 90% midway and get to your destination with just 1 break.

However this requires a good car with a 400km+ range (like GTO mentioned). Currently, in the sub 50 lac segment, only the Ioniq 5 and the Atto 3 have 400km+ range. Soon we could have the New Kona and Enyaq join this list.

To summarise:
- for long trips (~600-700km), Atto 3 or Ioniq are good with 1 break
- for medium trips (400-500km), MG ZSEV LR or Nexon LR are good with 1 break
- for short trips (200-300km), all EVs are good with 1 or no break

If you really have to use a lower range car for a long distance journey, you will have to take more breaks, spend more time waiting and in general spend more on DC charging. Sub optimal on all fronts.
