Re: Tata Punch Electric unveiled, bookings open

So I visited a dealership here in Mumbai today, and could gather almost all the following information, except for the price.

First some technicals:

Punch.EV LR
(Punch.EV MR)

Maximum Power kW:
90 kW (120 HP)
(60 kW (80 HP)

Maximum Torque:
190 Nm
(114 Nm)

Range:
421 km
(315 km)

Max Speed:
140 Kmph
(110 Kmph)

Max Gradability:
17.85 Degrees
(15.48 Degrees)

Ground Clearance:
155 mm (Laden)

Minimum Turning Circle:
Circle Dia. 10m
Clearance circle Dia. 10.65 m

Gross Vehicle Weight (Laden) 1627 kg - 1770 kg
Kerb Weight (Unladen) 1217 kg - 1360 kg

Maximum Power kW:
35 kWh Li-ion
(25 kWh Li-ion)

Charging Time:
3.3 kW AC - 10-100%
13.5 hours
(9.4 hours)

7.2 kW AC - 10-100%
5.0 hours
(3.6 hours)

50 kW DC Fast Charging - 10-80%
56 minutes
(56 minutes)

Other things I could gather:

Features from Nexon.EV missing in Punch.EV:

- Rear AC Vents
- Larger ICE - 12.30 inch vs 10.2 inch
- Mono Stable Shifter over Jewelled Control Knob
- JBL Modes with 8 Speakers + Subwoofer against 8 Speakers in Punch
- No V2L & V2V
- No front parking sensors. Only front camera for 360 degree system
- Front Passenger seat height adjustment
- 15w USB C charger + USB A charger instead of 45w USB C charger + USB A Charger
- USB C charger for rear passenger behind front center console
- Xpress Colling
- 60:40 split folding rear seats
- No cupholders in the rear center armrest
- Slightly better recline in rear seats in Nexon.EV
- Additional 12V power outlet behind the rear seat on the left

What Punch.EV gains over Nexon.EV:

- Bigger Boot - Marginally
- Cup Holders and marginally better shaped front center armrest storage. Although it could not accommodate my S23 Ultra.
- Much better wireless charger placement
- Shallow & flat rear transmission tunnel
- No raised floor at the rear in LR variant.
- 90 degree rear doors - better ingress/ egress
- No orange HV cables running underside the floorboard
- Rear seat back pockets

Other pointers:

Although the car at the dealerships didn't have the frunk factory fitted in it, the dealership was confident that customers' will be getting cars delivered with frunk in them as per their training. The PMS motor looked compact and there was some space between the engine cover and the motor lower down.

There was no spare wheel under the boot floor, but again the dealership staff insisted that customers' will be getting cars delivered with spare wheel in them. Although the space under the floorboard did not seem enough, the spare wheel well is present and batteries do not intrude in this space:

The rear wheels also get disc brakes with R16 195/60 Apollo Amperion LRR tires.

Punch.EV rear door armrests are all hard tough plastics with no soft touch or fabric inserts

The battery compartment

Front driver seatbelt eyesore

The charge level was being shown as 75% on the Punch.EV. DTE showed the following measurements with the following drive modes & regen modes:

At 75% SoC

Eco:
L1: 241 km
L2: 247 km
L3: 251 km

City:
L1: 233 km
L2: 239 km
L3: 242 km

Sport:
L1: 221 km
L2: 227 km
L3: 230 km

Punch.EV carries over the iTPMS from Nexon.EV instead of the full fledged TPMS that Nexon ICE gets.

This one points drives me mad... that's not 50kw DC fast charging, it's the same charging speed as Nexon EV Max, 30kw peak speed.
35kwh taking more than an hour is definitely not 1C, TaMo is still stuck to 0.7C and they call it Gen 2 and said 150kw capable.

Thanks for the wonderful post Aman!

- I hope the power-torque differences are between variants and not LR-MR.
- Has the ground clearance reduced due to battery pack? Or is it less just because its for 'laden'?
- That's a big relief! I so wanted to see the underside. Thanks again!

0.56 hours is like 35mins. Not 56 minutes. Going from 10% to 80% for a 35kwh battery in a little over half an hour seems like 50kw charging to me.

Of course, if it is 56minutes, then it’s back to square one! And they suck at math.

Front passenger seat height adjustment is not available on the Nexon.EV 3.0.

It is there only on the petrol/diesel Nexon.

A = 12.25
A LR = 13.75

E+ LR = 15.65

Spoke to a SA. He also confirms 17th launch.
1. The Punch is a rather small car. Interior room is not great. The refreshed XUV400 is 15.5L with similar sized 35KWH battery, and that car is a size bigger than even Punch's bigger brother, the Nexon! Punch EV may get a few initial sales but if prices are this high, it will struggle to sell after the initial enthusiast buyers have ordered theirs.

2. Punch's ICE positioning is as a 7-8L rupee car. Most buyers will balk at paying 15L for the same small car as a battery electric. The small car buyer also tends to be wary of range anxiety and Tata Motors' bad reputation for lacklustre service and electric and software issues in their EVs.

3. Tata Motors has a lot of new spare capacity now with the Sanand plant starting operations. It makes sense to ramp up volumes sharply to achieve good utilisation rate and get per-car costs down. Tata Motors can always raise prices later (e.g. just before Diwali, if Punch.ev becomes a grand success by then).

Adventure LR around 12L will make more sense. It also falls in the proverbial 10-12 Lac bracket above which volumes drop very quickly in the Indian market. I doubt if there are enough Indian buyers willing to pay much more than that for a car of this size. Even 12L is probably at the edge of pricing that could sustain demand over time.

- The different power-torque figures are the ones for LR & MR and not the variants.

- 155 mm is the laden ground clearance for Punch EV same as Nexon.EV. For Punch ICE, the laden ground clearance is 159 mm.

Tata has mentioned 0.56 under hours column. But in their Nexon.EV brochure, they have mentioned the same DC Fast charging speed as 56 Minutes.

So I'm 99% sure it'll be 56 minutes for Punch.EV too for going from 10% to 80%.

Please see below the Punch.EV's user manual page on charging speed.

0.56 Hours means 34 minutes which indicates 50KW charging.

I have a doubt here, is Punch.EV is a FWD as opposed to Nexon.EV which is a RWD? Looking at the above pointers, I think Punch.EV is a FWD.

Both cars are front wheel drive only. The little transmission tunnel is a relic of the ICE versions, used to route exhaust, wiring harnesses and cables while also providing additional rigidity.

A detailed walk-around of Punch.ev.

This guy has covered pretty much everything, except the drive.

Rear passengers rub the foot on the front seat's seatbelt getting in and getting out and is an issue in many cars. So on the punch its better that the area where this rub occurs is a steel cable rather than seatbelt webbing which eventually gets frayed at the edges.

One could see a similar construction in the Seltos FL, albeit with a better finish. Guess it's got to do something with new norms maybe?

Using 50KW charging to charge a 35 KW battery from 10 to 80% (25KW in total) cannot take 56 mins.

This is weird, it is not so that the boot is compromised by the battery or something else that the spare wheel cannot be provided. Based on the photos, you clicked the spare wheel well is definitely there and the floor board is intentionally put down below in the well. Even the nut that is used to tighten the tyre to the well is used to hold the tool board in the well. This seems a clear case of cost cutting.
