thanks,
If your usage is low, you shouldn't go for an electric car in the first place, better get a good used petrol car for half the price if there is a need for two cars in the family. Spending even 7.5 to 10 lakhs on a car that runs so low is meaningless

I live in a rented accommodation and will continue to live on rent for some time, so I am not sure whether I can get a connection of electricity line drawn up in my parking. My question is how value destructive (in terms of running cost) will it be if I only reply on public chargers? and since I will be using more fast chargers as well (due to time limitation etc.), how will it interplay via-v-vis the battery?

thanks,
I own the Comet EV since March 2024 and have driven around 8000 Kilometres so far.

My housing society took around two months to give me the necessary permissions to install the charger in my open parking. And I was exclusively charging at Public chargers (slow AC!) for those two months...and to my suprise it wasn't a challenge at all! There are public (paid) chargers belonging to Jio BP Pulse and Tata Power within 500 meters of both my residence as well as office and the charging once in two days added a few hundred meters to my weekly walks

When charging at home, I use electricity worth around INR 300 per full charge and get more than 170 kilometres consistently (mix of highway and city driving) so around 2 rupees per kilometre.

And while charging at Public chargers it costs me around INR 450 for a full charge for the same 170+ kilometres. So around 3 rupees per kilometre.

MG Comet EV might be a suitable car for you given your low running (maybe charge once a week).

Its a very capable car, I originally bought it purely as a second car for runabouts but its quickly become my favourite and primary car.

Re: MG Comet EV Review

Hi All! I am seriously looking at the MG Comet as a city runabout for me and my wife. One thing which bugs me is the feeble tinny sounding 2 speaker audio system. Has anyone installed after market speakers on a Comet yet? If yes please post pictures and videos so I can go ahead and get this car.

I listen to music and podcasts on my MG Comet EV during my 2+ hours, 60+ kilometres commute daily and for front passengers I find the speakers adequate.

Being an EV doing any kind of modifications may impact warranty so that's something to keep in mind.

I will ask MG Service Head during my upcoming 10K kilometres service (3rd free service) about possibilities for Audio upgrade and update here.

Re: MG Comet EV Review

This is strange. Today I recharged my Comet Plush variant (old top end) at my office using Bolt AC 7.4KW type 2 charger. From what I know Comet Plush/Play/Pace does not support fast charging so limits the charging only upto 3.2KW/H. However, to my shock from 52% to 100% it took less than 1.30 hour (i initially set it to 3.10 mins but disconnect ed after 1.30 hour). I seriouly doubt if this is even possible. Looks like some glitch when connected to high capacity AC chargers. I could confirm the same from the booking report on the app which shows only 4.4KW energy was used (screenshot shared). Technically, that is only 25% which means actual charge should have been only 77% (52+25). Please share if you had similar experience here. I am going to monitor if there will be a range drop suddenly due to this as wrong calibration by BMS cannot be ruled out.

Open the bonnet/hood and check the charger capacity, the actual on board charger is present in the car. The OBC is one with a fan and heatsink, the specification sticker will be written on the other side, so you may want to use a mirror or phone camera.

After monitoring for couple of days, the range drop after charging with 7.4KW was significant. As initially thought, it seems the calibration goes wrong when charged with high speed charger. I don't want to mess up with the BMS so wouldn't try again.

Re: MG Comet EV Review

Btw, did you folks know that the A/C of Comet turns on only when someone is sitting in the Driver’s seat?

If no one is sitting on the drivers seat only the blower turns on and not the cooler.

Also when you get out of the drivers seat, the cooling function turns off after 5-10 mins.

It’s very interesting but irritating when I’m in the parking doing some work on my laptop in the back seat.

How about having something like JBL Flip 5 in the car connected to your mobile.

I had something similar in my old car and worked out pretty good.

We have taken delivery of a Starry black Comet Excite on thursday. The audio when played on Android Auto or Apple carplay sounds good! The person who brought the test drive car played music from his phone on bluetooth and didn't sound good at all, but it is pretty good. My only gripe now is the interiors getting dirty. Does anyone have a solution for this?

3M foam interior cleaner works really well for Comet EV seats, I've kept the original fabric seats 😄

Re: MG Comet EV Review

Need some thoughts on going ahead with MG Comet Excite Version.

I own 2 cars and 1 EV Scooter.
2019 VW Ameo HL + Diesel DSG (Do not intend to sell for another 5 years)
2018 Ford Figo S TDCI Manual (Can exchange for a Comet)
Ather Rizta Z 3.7 kWh (It is a gift for Dad and replaced his 2 decade old bike)

My plan is as below:

I wish to keep VW Ameo DSG for long road trips (> 3K KMs) which I do twice a year and for shorter drives around Mumbai (Lonavla, Pune, Mahabaleshwar, Konkan and the likes)

Exchange the Ford Figo S TDCI (love the car and upgraded the audio along with new tyres & battery) for a MG Comet (Max budget 8.5L OTR)

For Ather, I have added a 15V Plug with MCB near my entrance. High possibility that the space can fit the Comet as well when charging.

I drive 25 KMs daily for work (5 days a week) and prefer car for intercity trips. Haven't taken public transport since 2015 and don't think I can change that now.

Don't wish to use the Ather as I want that to be parked at home so Dad can use it whenever he wants. Moreover, I am not very fond of 2 wheelers as it is too much of hassle - wearing protector during rains, uncomfortable during peak summers and then I get all sweaty till I reach office.

Ford Figo S is a special car and I have maintained it in top notch condition. It has done only 36K KMs in the last 5 years as I prefer automatic in Mumbai Traffic. I also follow the TBHP saying, that keeping a car for long turns out to be more value for money. A tank full of Figo costs me Rs. 4000/- (approx) and returns roughly 500 KMs. It has no EMI, so rather than paying Rs. 8000/- per month as EMI for Comet, I can use that for nearly 1000 KMs in my Figo (easily 4-5 months of driving within the city)

Why the thought of exchanging the Figo S for a Comet?

Comet is also as special as the Figo S. Both are a rarity on roads so I shall still continue to have the exclusivity.
Driving a manual car in Mumbai is becoming a health hazard.
Owning an Ather has shown me how self reliant one can be when one drives an EV. No more Fuel Station trips.
Obvious reasons of owning a new technology, cost savings and ease of driving & parking the Comet.

What works against the Comet?

Comet is not as fun to drive as the Ford Figo S TDCI
Figo does not need any major repairs for next few years (touching wood)
I may shift to a new house in 2 years where I won't have the luxury of charging near my entrance.
It will add a financial burden of minimum Rs. 8000/- per month as EMI.

I am in a catch 22 situation and looking for some pro and counter thoughts to help me come to a decision. I don't wish to regret even a bit once I have decided & don't wish to keep dwelling on the thought of exchanging the car as well.

Keep the Figo till you move house.

The comet is a fine car for the city but nowhere as comfortable as a sedan like the figo.

The extra expenses can be saved for a future bigger EV like the MG Windsor.

My 2cents!

Happy driving.

It makes neither financial nor functional sense to change, given the situation in your post.

The only reason to switch now would be to switch for environmental reasons or your desire to change to something new and quirky.

I own a comet ev and have done 9000+ kilometres in my five months of ownership. My previous daily driver was a Toyota Corolla 1.8 Manual.

My experience is that the Comet is a lot of fun to drive within the city even better than the 1800cc Corolla.

The car accelerates very nicely from traffic stops and climbs gradients easily without any discomfort.

I am using Comet exclusively for the City (Mumbai) and my daily running is around 60 kilometres. I do around 2000 kilometres each month and my electricity bill has increased by 4-5 thousand or so...so I am spending around 2.5 rupees per kilometre vs almost rupees 15 in the Corolla! (It gives 7-8 kmpl in the city)

Ask for a long (30-50 kilometres) test drive of the Comet EV and that should help you decide.

Pros in my view are:

Ease of driving - very smooth, lightweight controls

Very good acceleration for the city

Never ever feels underpowered in the City (not the case on highways but this is not a highway car)

Very nice interiors, feels spacious and modern

Good infotainment

Very low cost of running! One sixth of my Corolla!

Easy to park, easy to charge
