Mercedes-Maybach has unveiled its first fully-electric model in the form of the ultra-luxurious EQS 680 SUV.



The Maybach SUV is based on the standard Mercedes EQS but comes with a host of new tech, features and luxury. In terms of design, the Maybach gets the Mercedes three-pointed star hood ornament on the bonnet. The front comes with a black panel with the signature chrome-plated slats in a 3D look. The sides of the Maybach EQS carry forward the shiny trims on the pillars, door handles, running boards, window surrounds and the 'Maybach' emblem on the D-pillar.



The car also comes with light animations greeting passengers on all four doors. The Maybach EQS sits on exclusive 21-inch alloy wheels (22-inch wheels optional), while the rear also gets a bit of chrome treatment along with a continuous light strip for the taillights. Also, in signature Maybach fashion, the EQS 680 is offered with a dual-tone paint scheme on the outside.



Inside, the Mercedes-Maybach comes with the brand's MBUX Hyperscreen with Maybach-specific start-up animations. The rear passengers also get individual 11.6-inch displays mounted on the back of the front seats. The seats are upholstered in Nappa leather and come with reclining and massage functions. The centre console at the rear gets wooden trims and access to the trunk fridge.



Powering the Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 are two electric motors (one on each axle) offering a 4MATIC AWD setup. The electric powertrain offers a total power output of 649 BHP and 950 Nm. The ultra-luxurious SUV can sprint from 0 - 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and has a top speed of 130 mph (209km/h). The Maybach EQS claims a WLTP range of 600 km on a single charge with multiple fast-charging options.

Looks deadly! Love the exterior styling as well as the opulent cabin. I actually think electric power is the superior choice for super-luxury cars like Maybach, Rolls-Royce etc. Reason = smoother power delivery & refinement than the best of ICE cars, zero emissions (billionaires can be image conscious) and you can charge it at home (why share space at the pump with us commoners).

Confusing nomenclature though. Why doesn't Mercedes call its Electric SUVs something else? EQS is also used for electric sedans (Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4Matic Review). Like in ICE cars, anything starting with G is an SUV (GLC, GLE, GLS, G-Wagen....). So why do their electric SUVs share the "EQS" badge with the sedans?

I think it looks horrendous. The design language that Mercedes has decided to go for in it's EQ EVs is just a true eyesore. It's a shame considering their interiors are absolutely spot on. They are luxurious, opulent and just plain right loaded with features. Even this EQS SUV interior looks like something God would travel around in heaven. I would rather be in hell than be seen travelling in this ugly looking space ship.

Absolutely love the opulent interiors, but I will reserve judgement on the exteriors. It looks like a chromed up EQC, a car that costs a fraction of the price this one will entail. Apart from size, nothing sets the EQS apart from the EQC. The front design, the rear, headlights and taillights, even the window line, all seem to mimic the EQC. I certainly feel like the Cullinan and the Bentayga offer more exclusivity, but for a more discerning and discrete rich person, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS in a more staid colour option would blend in better.

Looks like the Germans are in a sort of cycle when it comes to exterior designs. Initially Audi was on top when they introduced the strip LED DRLs(I still remember those days when I was in college just drooling over them in my bike's rear view mirror). After sometime the BMWs had a good design pushing Audi to No 2 position and then again after sometime Mercedes designs were top class which continued and is still going strong. BMW now has a Hyundai kind of policy I guess you either like it or hate it, Audi for some reason has remained stagnant.Mercedes was good but then this car makes me feel these guys are also going the BMW and Audi way.

This is what I found about Merc's EQ nomenclature

• EQA is the name of the new entry-level model to the all-electric Mercedes-EQ vehicles. EQA is an electric version of the second-generation GLA crossover SUV.
• EQB is all-electric compact SUV with up to seven seats. EQB is based on the X247 GLB-Class platform.
• EQC the production version of the Generation EQ concept, is the first EQ model. EQC is based on the X253 GLC-Class platform.
• EQE and EQE SUV was revealed in 2021. EQE comes in 6 versions (300, 350, 350+, 500, AMG 43 and AMG 53). EQE is the second model based on the dedicated MEA platform.
• EQG, the G-Class concept car with pure electric drive (read electric G-Wagen)
• EQV is the second EQ model, which was unveiled at the 2019. EQV is based on the V-Class and shares the same wheelbase dimensions. It is an up to eight-seater vehicle
• EQS and EQS SUV - EQS is an electric full-size luxury sedan intended to be the electric equivalent of the S-Class. A SUV version Mercedes-Maybach EQS was unveiled in Apr 2022
• EQT was revealed on December 2, 2022. It is the electric version of the T-Class van

This is such a loverly looking car, opulences screams from every angle. And it is really big, 21' tyres look so small on it. In India these will be primarily driven in the city by the high and mighty and given the 2km1litre mileage of bigger Mercs makes "eminent sense" as an electric car! :-)

This looks better than the quirky EQS. I quite like it!
Also they have given GLS Maybach seats in the rear whereas the EQS rear seats offer far less comfort and space compared to the regular S

It will be a big hit with Bollywood, who have lapped up most of the allocations of the GLS Maybach in India ever since its launch.

I presume it will be priced lower than the GLS Maybach which is nearly 3cr. This could come in as CBU at 2.5cr, But if they go CKD then could be expect this at a 2cr /approx price?! That would be the sweet spot and take away sales from the regular S and 7

The 2024 EQS680 SUV will be a new model for the Mercedes-Maybach brand when it hits dealer showrooms in fall 2023. The EQS680 SUV's electric powertrain includes two electric motors that combine for 649 horsepower and offer standard all-wheel drive. Range should be similar to the Benz-branded EQS580 SUV, which is rated for around 285 miles of driving per charge.

A 108.4-kW battery pack lies beneath the Maybach EQS's floorboards. In the Benz model, this battery holds enough electrons for up to 305 miles of driving between charges. Here, due to the more powerful electric motors and presumably heavier curb weight, we expect to see a range of about 280 miles per charge. Luckily, the EQS SUV can charge at speeds up to 200 kW, which Mercedes says will take the battery from 10 to 80 percent in 31 minutes when connected to a compatible DC fast charger.
