Re: Hyundai Ioniq 5 Review

20 Days & 3000kms with Ioniq

Ioniq has completed 20 days in our household & has crossed 3000 kms today. Our initial confidence in making the right choice has only deepened as the car consistently surpasses our expectations.

Over these 3000 kilometers, we've utilized a total of 359 kWh, with 300 kWh charged at home (6 Rs/kW) and an additional 59 kWh (24 Rs/kW) charged using Tata Power's fast charger. The city average stands at just above 7 km/kWh, reflecting the car's efficiency in urban settings.

Transitioning from a diesel vehicle involved a definite learning curve. The initial drive home from the dealer in Andheri was nerve-wracking. After covering 200 kms and adjusting the settings, I found the sweet spot with the car set to Regen level 3 and eco mode on. It suits me perfectly. Previously considering myself a spirited yet safe driver, I've transformed into a calm and safer driver, with no sudden urge to accelerate or aggressively navigate the road. The Ioniq's quiet operation has made me much more aware of my surroundings. The only downside so far is that motor noise does penetrate the cabin.

The Ioniq has not only been a reliable companion for city commuting but has also excelled during two outstation trips. One journey took us to Parsi Dairy Farm, Palghar, covering a total distance of 350 kms, including navigating through a challenging 2-hour jam at Ghodbunder road. Even after this demanding day, we returned home with a remarkable 33% battery charge remaining.

The second outstation trip was to Shirdi, involving travel from Panvel to Trimbakeshwar via Kasara Ghat and from Trimbakeshwar to Shirdi via Samruddhi Mahamarg. Negotiating steep inclines proved to be a test for the Ioniq's range, with a 1% charge loss every 2 kms on the ghat. However, the Samruddhi Mahamarg was a delight, providing a smooth and pleasant drive. Despite the challenges, we reached Shirdi with a commendable 22% range left after completing 350 kms.

During our stay at Shirdi, we used the Tata Power 30 kWh charger at Marigold Residency, charging the car to 100% in 2 hours and 39 minutes, incurring a billing of Rs. 1420. The next day, our return journey via the Mumbai Pune Expressway covered 332 kms, and we arrived home with a substantial 44% battery charge.

All our outstation trips were with trunkful & all occupants seated in car, aircon set to 22 Degrees & blower set at 3.

Having traveled this route multiple times with our trusty X1, the unanimous family consensus is that the Ioniq provides the most comfortable and relaxed travel experience. It has left us with the anticipation of opting for more long journeys with the Ioniq in the future.

Re: Hyundai Ioniq 5 Review

Quick question to Ioniq owners here:
  • How is the rear seat comfort?
  • Are there any niggles or issues which bug you about the car?
  • Did you get any discounts of freebies offered while purchase?
  • Whats the real world range in city and highway which you are getting?

Thanks for taking the time to answer these, I'm considering getting an Ioniq to replace my 2017 Tiguan

    - Very good. Leg space is best in class. Rear seat cooling is average, not top class
  • Are there any niggles or issues which bug you about the car?
    - Zero niggles. Only issue was that they took close 2 months to activate Bluelink App
  • Did you get any discounts of freebies offered while purchase?
    - Zero
  • Whats the real world range in city and highway which you are getting?
- 550 km in city and 440 km on highways at 100-110 km/hr speeds

Am I the only one bothered by how much of a dust magnet the IONIQ's rear is? Drives me crazy seeing it get dirty barely 15 minutes into any trip. By far the car's biggest issue.

Re: Hyundai Ioniq 5 Review

Thanks for the replies.

I had a chance to test drive the car today with my wife.As someone who loved the Ioniq from launch and tried to pursue my better half to consider it only to be shot down earlier I was really excited.

Unfortunately the test drive car was in shambles. Rattling all around and completely dirtied interior. Things were not off to a good start.

First half of the test drive was great with us in the front with me driving. I really enjoyed the driving experience and the stereo was decent too. Played around with some Adas features and regen paddles. I could totally imagine myself driving this car even though I did feel the seats didn’t ‘fit’ well. Especially at enveloping you and cozy feel. I’m unsure how they will be over long distance.

For the second half we decided to ride in the back, this is where things went downhill. The under thigh support was not too good and both of us agreed it didn’t feel ‘roomy’ in the back compared to the Tiguan this is supposed to replace. It feels like the seat backs are in your face even after adjusting front seats and moving rear bench. Also the hard plastics on the dash and lack of colour choices made the interior feel a bit cheap. Although I loved almost every material used elsewhere.

We checked out all the colours and I am certain I’d prefer to go for Gravity Gold. In reality it resembles iridium silver.

I was so confident from reading all the reviews and now kinda heartbroken. I had made up my mind but the test drive really changed my mind about it since we intend to use the back seat a lot. The other options in EVs don’t work due to legroom being bad in the rear. Now going to look at the EV6 which I was not considering earlier.

It's really sad that poor effort by dealerships can affect the sales of otherwise excellent products. I had a similar experience with Kia ev6. The SA kept saying this car needs to be checked. Why would they schedule a test drive if they were aware of some issues. I had to report to them that the brakes were shot and it wasn't safe after completing the TD. I even asked them to bring the car to my office again after getting it cleaned and serviced. After 1 week - same story. They just took the trash out of the cubbies.

I believe the reason is that dealership owners use these vehicles as personal cars unless a test drive is scheduled. And dealership staff may not be in a position to reprimand their employers for not maintaining them well.

Am surprised you found the rear seat so bad. We just picked up the Ioniq 5 as our third car adding to our X3 and Tiguan Allspace. The rear seat knee room is materially better than the X3 and marginally worse than the Allspace. Under thigh support is of course worse than the Allspace but probably better than the X3. And this is with my driving position which is as far back as the front seat goes.

Do worry about maintaining the interiors especially once we hand this over to a driver (for the time being, I will be using this instead of the X3). And must say the car in Gravity Gold looks outstanding - had taken it to Lonavala yesterday (before the match) and it was great to drive too.

I will likely start a thread once I have driven it a bit more

Congratulations on your Ioniq, looks smashing. I look forward to your review once you've spent sometime with it.

I think we are just spoilt because of the amazing space the Tiguan offers for a car it's size. I would have kept it longer if not for the random BS4 bans in NCR and the resale going off the cliff for a diesel car once it approaches 10 years. Our hand is being forced in a way but the EV incentives and Tax benefit balances it out.

One of my biggest worries as well was giving the car to driver, do let me know how that went for you with the white interior. The reason for not loving the rear is basically I was unable to find a perfectly comfortable position, even with the recline and all. For my wife it was a bit of that and the lower ride height as compared to Tiguan. She prefers SUV and high riding cars. I don't really think space is the issue here its more of how the front seats are shaped that kind of protrudes into your face for rear occupants. Anyways this is our subjective opinion. Objectively the car does offer class leading space and then some.

I will be checking out the iX, e-tron, ev6. Have already test driven the Volvo C40 and loved it, but its more of a self drive car and we were looking to go a size up. Not considering the electric X1 for same reasons. I am not fond of the Mercedes EV design language at-all so they are out of the equation.

Congratulations on the Ioniq 5. Really look forward to the ownership review in due course.

I’ve pledged another 3 - 4 years to my GT and once its 11 - 12 years old, I’ll also actively consider flipping it for either an EV in the 30 - 45L segment or a strong hybrid. I’m hoping EV tech will be even more mature in that 3 - 4 year period (not that it isn’t already quite mature). Hopefully by then the garage will be a combo of a decent performance smooth petrol and an EV.

My Bangalore colleagues have taken much better to EVs than Mumbai - we’ve already got one EV6 and one Ioniq amongst that lot. Not a single one I can think of in our Mumbai office (yet).

Re: Hyundai Ioniq 5 Review

Completed the 20000 km 2/3rd (?) service - I never got the 1st 1500km check up that's now happening I believe so 2nd for my vehicle but 3rd as per the schedule.

Overall much better experience than the 1st service. They did whatever is mentioned as per the schedule as well as the wheel balancing and alignment and then tried very hard to resolve the squeaky noise that's coming from the boot every time the vehicle goes over a speed breaker. This is only getting worse and they managed to identify it's an issue with the struts and are going to replace them under warranty.

Very happy with the vehicle generally, the white interior is also holding up well.

My car also has that noise from the boot. Hyundai has released a TSB for this issue. Maybe try telling your service centre about it : https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...35339-0001.pdf

I need to get mine fixed as well.

Also I faced a 12v battery issue for the first time. The car was not going into D or R, was stuck in P or N.

Called the dealer up and he suggested to disconnect and reconnect the ground cable of the 12v battery next to the frunk. That fixed it. But doing that requires having a wrench, so I would suggest all Ioniq 5 owners to keep a small wrench in their car for emergencies.

Thanks, will forward this to them.

Did this occur after you took your vehicle off charge by any chance? Or was it while normal driving?

There's another fix to this issue that has been shared online and that is to switch the vehicle off exit, lock it with the remote and start the A/C via the app keep it running for 1-2 min then switch off. Wait 8-10 mins and the vehicle should start. It has worked for me without having to disconnect the battery.

For me the issue occurred while normal driving. On starting the car around 2 hours after it was last used. Will keep in mind the fix you have suggested as another option to try if this happens again.

Finally got that creaking sound from the boot fixed at a service centre. They made changes to the boot latch. Feels so good, had put up with that noise for several months.
