Xiaomi car name leaks, company rejecting Tesla and Mercedes workers.

The name of Xiaomi's first car has allegedly leaked, with the tech giant expected to unveil its vehicle in October or November.

Xiaomi's first car could be called Modena, though previous reports indicated that the phone manufacturer refers to the project as MS11.

Chinese media reports that Xiaomi is working around the clock on getting the vehicle ready for mass production, with a new factory in Beijing expected to produce 100,000 units next year. The trial production has already started, but the output is limited to approximately 50 prototypes per week. Xiaomi is still waiting for the go-ahead from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology before it can begin mass production.

Xiaomi is currently on a hiring spree for its Beijing assembly plant. The tech giant is particularly interested in workers with experience in the automotive industry, but the local media is reporting that Xiaomi even rejected several Mercedes and Tesla workers. The company only wants the best of the best, as it considers Modena a high-priority product whose quality must be top-notch. Xiaomi will position its car as a competitor to Tesla and a potential Apple Car.

The ‘Mi Car’ with the codename MS11 is a sedan, and it will be contract-manufactured by established carmaker BAIC. The SU7 is 4,997 mm long and 1,963 mm wide, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm. That makes it a fair bit bigger than the BYD Seal, which is 4,800 mm long and 1,875 mm wide, with a wheelbase of 2,920 mm.

Under the sleek if generic skin are batteries by BYD (LFP) and CATL (ternary NMC). The base RWD setup has a 295 hp (220 kW) motor while the dual-motor AWD adds on a front 369 hp (275 kW) unit to make it 664 hp (495 kW) in total. The 1,980 kg RWD’s top speed is limited to 210 km/h. Weight and speed maxes out at 2,205 kg and 265 km/h.

there will be three versions of the EV – SU7, SU7 Pro and SU7 Max. Some trim levels will feature an active rear wing and there are two wheel options – 19- and 20-inch. Xiaomi submitted cars with and without Lidar. There’s a camera on the car’s B-pillar, which suggests a phone-style facial recognition unlocking function.

the SU7’s in-car system will be powered by Xiaomi’s HyperOS, an in-house operating system that can power both smartphones and cars. There’s also built-in ETC for toll collection.

According to CNC, mass production of the SU7 will begin in December, and deliveries will start in February 2024. BAIC’s Beijing factory has already started a trial production run with dozens of pre-production units having rolled off the line.

Electronics giant unwraps a super-sleek Porsche Taycan rival destined for global sales;

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun says the company is seeking to become one of the world’s top five car makers within the next 15 to 20 years.

The new saloon debuted 1,003 days after the Chinese consumer electronics company initially announced its plans to enter the electric car ranks in 2021 with an initial investment of RMB10 billion (£1.1 billion) and plans for a further RMB70 billion (£7.8bn) over the next 10 years.

Further Xiaomi models will include an SUV, according to plans already revealed by the Beijing-based company.

New platform to support both 400V and 800V architectures

The basis for Xiaomi’s first production model is a new electric car platform that goes under the internal name Modena. It has been conceived to support both 400-volt and 800-volt electric architectures, as well as single- and dual-motor drivetrains.

The styling of the SU7 was developed in-house under the leadership of Xiaomi’s head of design, Sawyer Li. The Chinese designer has contributed to a number of recent new cars, including the BMW iX and Circular Vision Concept during a five-year stint at the German car maker.

At 4997mm in length, 1963mm in width and 1440mm in height, the new saloon is 34mm longer, 3mm narrower and 44mm higher than the Porsche Taycan, and has a wheelbase 100mm longer than its German rival at 3000mm.

The sleek lines contribute to a claimed drag co-efficient of just 0.195. This makes it one of the most aerodynamically efficient production cars yet, beating the 0.199 claimed by Geely for the new Galaxy E5 and roughly matching GAC’s Hyper GT.

As well as being highly aerodynamic, Xiaomi also claims the SU7 boasts high levels of structural integrity. The rear body structure is cast in a 9100-tonne die-casting machine.

Power for the SU7 comes from Xiaomi’s own in-house developed electric motors, named after combustion engine arrangements: the V6, V6s and V8s.

The base V6 develops 295bhp and 295lb ft of torque. It is planned to be used exclusively with a 400-volt electric architecture in price-leading variants of the SU7. The mid-range V6s gains an additional 74bhp and 74lb ft and is compatible with an 800-volt electric architecture.

Both the V6 and V6s operate at up to 21,000rpm, according to Xiaomi.

The dual-motor SU7 model uses a combination of the V6 and V6s motors for an overall output of 664bhp and a claimed 0-62mph time of 2.78sec. Notably, it is also equipped with an 875-volt charging system for ultra-rapid top-ups.

Due out in 2025, the V8s or so-called 'HyperEngine' is claimed to produce up to 670bhp and 468lb ft at a maximum efficiency of 98.11% and a power density of 10.14kW/kg operating on a 800-volt architecture. It is capable of reaching operating speeds of up to 27,200rpm,

Pilot production of the SU7 has already begun at Xiaomi’s factory in Beijing.
