Re: Hyundai Creta EV in the works

I expect both Hyundai and Mahindra will wait for each other to disclose their pricing ladder first. Mahindra has anyway shared their base trim prices.

This is exciting news. Even if its not a ground up EV design, it should be easier to live with on a day-to-day basis with many common "trivial" parts that need "replacement" - even possibly some body panels being shared with a large-volume model.

One of the god features seems to be the regular wall socket under the rear bench- something that you can connect your laptop charger to- clearly shows up in the video in 0:31. This will be super handy.

Stalk Placed Gear Shifter
Will say it again. Nothing is really exciting in the EV space after the Mahindra BE twins. 51.4 KWH battery would mean realistic range of about 350 Kms at most. Doesn't look any different the Creta, no new noteworthy equipment, not even a significantly better 0-100 time compared to Creta DCT (8.9sec).

Considering the Creta DCT is already touching about 23.7L (OTR) in Pune, if I assume a further 2L premium for the larger battery pack, @ 26L OTR this is right in the BE 6E larger battery pack top variant territory. BE6E offers better range, faster charging, lifetime warranty on battery, bigger car (in every dimension), more ground clearance, better performance, better safety equipment, better equipment, futuristic styling and what not!

I had hoped Hyundai would go back to the drawing board, but seems they preferred continuing the half hearted attempt.

I know the Mahindra may give few tantrums WRT electronics (hopefully minor as has been the case with other Mahindra cars), but it's IMO tolerable considering the overall package is simply way way brilliant than the Creta EV.

Also, realistically 350-400kms is exactly the range many people are looking for interstate travels. So this is perfect. Creta EV could take on Windsor EV's sales numbers, if the price and charging speed is right.
Since you are comparing it with Windsor EV, are you expecting it to be priced at Windsor level? If yes, then at that price the Creta EV would certainly sell well (top Windsor variant is available at 16.31L) But considering the Creta Petrol and Diesel variant top out at 23.7L OTR, I am pretty sure it would be priced atleast 1.5L higher for the top most variant, and at that price after the advent of Mahindra's it looks ridiculous.

Apart from the only two points you stated everything else is in favor of the Mahindra's. Heck even the second point regarding the design, I am sure most will opt for the Mahindra, while conservative folks would be in a minority and prefer the Creta.

I don't want to start a Creta EV vs BE6E debate on this, I just wanted to highlight how disappointed I am with Hyundai. I was expecting them to put up a fight considering their no.2 position is threatened by the Mahindra and Tata.

Mahindra has set the bar very high other launches are turning out to be disappointments.

Just a thought: there may exist a market that does not want a relatively overdesigned EV that stands out too much. In a sea of Cretas on the road, this does just that.

Regarding specs, I agree with you.

Re: Hyundai Creta EV in the works

Battery packs seem to be smaller in size. They are even smaller than Curvv ev's 45 & 55 and even more smaller than Mahindra's BE 6 & XEV 9e which have 59kw & 79kw respectively.

Agreed. I dont think Creta EV, priced higher than Mahindra EVs, will sell, at least in reasonable numbers. It certainly will not sell in a Creta top trim + 2 lakhs price bracket. Not to forget, the Tata Harrier EV and possibly the Windsor EV with the larger battery pack are also round the corner.

For Hyundai, pricing will be key. Also, given that its based on an existing platform with its EV bits also from its global parts bin (possibly even from older/ current cars in Europe), the incremental cost of development would not have been high. So a lower volume, or a lower ASP can still make it profitable over the lifecycle of this model

Re: Hyundai Creta EV in the works

Base trim 51 kWh Creta can at max be priced at 17-17.5 lakh. That's about 0.5-1 lakh less than the 60kwh Mahindra.

Anything more and they risk losing sales to the car with the bigger battery.

Hyundai does have an ace up its sleeve though. The superior efficiency of its Kona drivetrain that helped the 40 kWh Kona deliver similar real world range compared to the 50 kWh ZS. If Creta EV can replicate or even exceed that efficiency, we could have a blockbuster on our hands.

There is a lot of margins to be made in this segment since the GST advantage compared to the ICE cars is immense. Finally there are products coming in to take advantage of this. Even with seemingly reasonable pricing, companies can rake in a lot of profits.

Re: Hyundai Creta EV in the works

As a Kona owner, I can say that Hyundai in its electric vehicles has a better reliability and battery efficiency than Indian manufacturers. Would have preferred new Kona model but it seems Hyundai wants to encash on its creta brand and fill where Kona was. Best of luck to Hyundai but with ev now becoming more mainstream, charging infrastructure now needs some more attention, especially in our state highways.

Re: Hyundai Creta EV in the works

Saw one Creta all cameo-ed on the Delhi Mumbai expressway last Saturday. I tried best looking at any silences/ exhaust pipe or all covered up grill, but it was difficult for due to covers/ stickers & the speed I was driving (it's 100 kmph on that road). Sorry no pics as I accidently deleted the dashcam footage too.

It it were the Creta EV, it is definitely ready for launch I believe, on track with company's plans to do so in Jan-25.

For those (including me) who are looking to shift to an EV, this hits the right spot.
It is a 'no non-sense' vehicle which is 'right sized' to be the only car, comes with very good 'fit and finish' with good amount of thought going in to detailing (no whimsical touches), reliable and comes with adequate range and performance.

Maybe Hyundai is taking the minimalistic route. they are playing to their strength rather than adding too much bling. This could also help them to keep costs in check! I see this more as Currv, Nexon & Windsor competitor and not competing the M&M twins which are for sure half a segment above

Re: Hyundai Creta EV in the works

Hyundai needs to set the price correctly, especially considering how Mahindra prices their different variants of Be 6e and Xev 9e. It would have been better for both Hyundai and us if they had introduced the new Kona instead of the Creta, with a larger battery pack. Most of them prefer larger battery packs.
