In theory, you couldn't be more right. But Indian market doesn't always go with the convention unfortunately. Consider Kona - for such a good product that it was, failed to penetrate in the EV space in the Indian context the way it was supposed to have. Of course not everything is just the product but for similar reasons, I wouldn't put my money on the new Kona' success also despite it's global accolades, especially on this nascant EV space.

In India, brand value trumps everything else and Creta has one of the best brand value of any product, clearly shown by the success of its consistent sales despite the solid competition in the price bracket. Also case in point is the Fortuner - the sales of the vehicle doesn't necessarily merit what the product offers.

Hyundai is merely capitalizing on the Creta brand. And despite the limitations of not being a BEV and of course being locally made, a "Creta" EV would penetrate the EV space a lot quicker than the Kona ever could. For now that is all that is needed.

Couple of years down the line, an updated Kona might seem like a lot better product than the existing Creta at that time and Hyundai should ideally have the luxury of offering either or both depending on how the market reacts then.

For now however, with all its limitations the market NEEDS a Creta EV. I'm optimistic of its success.

Instead I’d rather see an update to the outdated Kona to compete with the MG ZS and upcoming(?) MG4. Even if they make the Kona a better car it won’t cannibalise the Creta because of size and other design differences.
Kona is also an ICE convert. It is the Creta equivalent in other markets. Just that India got only the EV version. Other markets get the ICE and EV versions of Kona. Between the two ICE converts, Creta EV makes more sense because of the brand value it carries. I think Hyundai will discontinue the Kona EV once the Creta EV launches.

Oh yes, that is true! Thank you for mentioning that. The Kona was such a well made product in my book that I briefly forgot that it isn't a BEV!

But yes, at the end of the day brand recall is a very important criteria for Indian customers and to that effect the Creta EV should do well!

You can see the tachometer and the PRND markings next to the great lever, which points to an ICE car only.

Yes , rev meter is seen its even present in Ioniq-5 N line even in Hyundai kona ev in sports mode there is a rev meter !!

P,R,N & D are standard in electric vehicles

What I wanted to convey is Hyundai india accidentally shared this image in run up the creta 2024 launch as both the stalks in driver side of the image i shared ain’t there in ice versions of Creta 2024

Hope this clarifies.

Hyundai to launch its first made-in-India EV in 2025

Hyundai has confirmed that it plans to launch its first made-in-India electric SUV by early 2025. It is likely to be the Creta EV.

Hyundai’s first all-electric model for the Indian market will be manufactured at its Chennai facility. The carmaker has also confirmed that production will begin at the end of this year before it goes on sale in early 2025.

The Creta EV has already been spotted testing on Indian roads. It is expected to feature the same design as the ICE version with minor changes, including a blanked-off grille and aero-optimized alloy wheels.

Inside, the electric version will have the same dashboard design but will sport a few unique touches as well. Spy images have revealed a 2-spoke steering wheel with a drive mode selector stalk mounted on the steering column. The Creta EV is also expected to get features such as dual-zone automatic climate control, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS.

Reports suggest that the Creta EV will share its electric powertrain with the entry-level Kona EV. It is likely to be powered by a front-mounted electric motor and a 45 kWh battery pack.

Re: Hyundai Creta EV in the works

45 kWh with the aerodynamics of a brick (Creta) mean sub 300km range. That for the price of 25Lakhs or so(to not cannibalize the ICE) doesn't seem like a good deal to me.

I hope they come with a 60kWh version for the top model. That for sub-30L would be a good deal.

On the contrary, considering the higher GST 4m+ SUVs incur versus the 5% for EVs, the likes of Creta and the upcoming Harrier electric, ICE and EV variants could be closely priced. Or so is my thinking.

Spotted a camouflaged car, which car is this?

During my recent trip to Shell retail outlet Tathwade, Pune for some official work, spotted this camouflaged car. I managed to click a pic before the ragged looking driver rushed towards me to prevent further clicking. Going by the parking slot sign, the vehicle is an EV for sure and was getting charged at EV station. Plus its an automatic as I couldn't see the gear knob. I started blurting out all names to the driver to get the identity but he refused all of those. He hinted that this is not an Indian company car and he was not aware of the brand or the model. That is all I could get from the driver. Posting the pic here for someone to identify the car.

My bet - Creta EV. The ORVMs, side window profiles and front quarter panel look similar.

It is the Creta EV. Notice the text (Korean?) on the rear side window, and the alloys match to what was earlier posted on this TBHP Creta EV post.

Quick question, can you read it to determine if it's Korean or not? I tried zooming in, but I still couldn't understand the words well enough to identify the language.

I couldn’t understand the language either, but look at the spaces between each letter. English, or most Indian languages, do not have spaces after each letter. Given that it is Creta EV, I think it might be written in Korean.

Ex:

Of course, this isn’t written on it, but notice the spacing.
