I think this deserves its own thread. If moderators disagree, please merge it with an existing thread.

This goes to show the difference between a safe car and a really safe car. A Tesla Model Y plunged off 250ft off a rocky cliff in California and all four occupants, 2 minors and 2 adults, survived!

Surely there is an element of luck involved but the car in question was rated as one of the top vehicles with least probability of injury in the event of a crash by NHTSA.

What!!! Maybe there’s some element of luck, but as someone who deals with RTA’s on a daily basis, this is unbelievable to say the least. I’m sure the owner will never buy anything else other than a Tesla! Shows the importance of buying a safe car, maybe the chances of dying in a car crash is 0.001% in an unsafe car, but for that person the result is 100%.

Hats off Tesla. I would also say some amount of luck here.

My only gripe,I see the trend lately that when people know that they are in a safe car they push the limits of safety envelope.

They are not considering safety is a relative term, aka safety at what speed. They assume that they can do whatever speeds they want and the 5* rated car will protect them.

My only wish is wish is that when manufacturers display the rating they also mention at what speed it was tested, so as to avoid the false sense of safety.

A twist in the tale - Apparently the crash is being suspected as deliberate and the man is under arrest. That they all survived is even more amazing!

@Mods - According to the latest news, the car in question was a Model Y not a Model 3. Can we change the title accordingly.

It is not a pure co-incidence or luck given Model Y recently received the highest safety score of any car under Euro NCAP's newest more stringent crash tests.

Just read about this story. The vehicle looks unrecognizable but there was no fire, contrast this to Rishabh Pant's fully burnt car.

Many people even here say that fire is a given in an EV accident, though anecdotal proves wrong.

Reports say that eyewitnesses called 911 immediately. All the occupants were belted (kids were in child seats) which was a big reason for survival. Also, in cases of previous such crashes, when there was no witness, survivors had to spend mutiple days at the crash site until someone noticed them and called for rescue . This family is very fortunate that they were rescued quickly.

The Tesla landed on its wheels which helped soak up the landing shock and also eased rescue effort. I think that was because of the weight of batteries at bottom of the car. In any case, this is one miraculous escape.
