Re: Rumour: Tata Nano could return in an electric avatar

My father owns a Nano for the past 10 years. We have taken it on long drives of upto 200kms when it was new and was the only car in the household. In my opinion, an electric motor will easily solve two of the biggest problems of the Nano; the poor low end torque & the poor NVH. Not so good brakes may get better with regen braking. The battery pack weight will probably improve the dynamics also. Refresh the interiors a bit to present day standards and give a range of around 200-250kms, I am sure there will be a good number of takers. I would be glad to buy one for my father who finds the Nano’s seating position more comfortable than even my Compass. Whether the existing chassis will support all this, if they will be able to price it like what they did with the Nano, I seriously doubt.

@mods, can we add a poll regarding this ? How many bhpians will buy the electric nano (if it ever gets launched) as a second car?

In my opinion price and range combo plays a big role here. People talking about 7-8 lakhs with 150kms for Nano EV should understand that Nano's poor image will make it unlikely to sell at high prices. 5-6 lakhs with 150-200 kms range seems Value for Money. With the current inflationary prices tata might price it higher.

  • 6,00,000/- price (limits battery and motor power /technology)
  • Micro Car (this form factor limits physical battery size)
  • 250 km range (needs more battery)
This combination is not possible AFAIK.

Unless range is reduced to 150km to save price.
or price is increased for higher KWH battery and efficient technology for onboard charger/controller/motor to achieve higher range.

Re: Rumour: Tata Nano could return in an electric avatar

This is just a rumour.

If it does come into existence, prospective buyers should read and talk to owners of existing TML vehicles to know about the disappointments they’d expect beforehand.

I have a Nano Twist and won’t touch a TML product in my lifetime. The company works in silos and their managers are busy fighting their internal bureaucracy instead of focusing on customers and product quality.

They drive vendors to such extreme levels of quality compromise that the vendors actually anticipate revenues from the frequent replacements of failed parts. The focus is not on longevity but on compromised quality, because the company believes it’s responsibility ends after selling the car.

In short, the company lacks integrity in doing business and it shows in the compromised nature of their products.

Thank you for pointing it out. I am wondering which car companies should I consider as top 3 in order of preference for reliability/quality of product? From my limited readings on this forum the top 3 might be Maruti suzuki, Toyota, Hyundai for extreme reliability and peace of mind instead of wondering when the next breakdown will happen. Is this accurate assessment?

So here's a question to all bhpians, would a 2019 nano ev with 150 km range make sense to purchase at around 5 lakh price point today? An NCR based company is currently selling these to interested private buyers and several are now located at a yard in hyderabad.

Thanks,
Deepak

No private buyer is going to touch the outdated and long discontinued Nano today. Certainly not in status conscious Delhi NCR. That’s without even considering the fact these these cars will not be backed by Tata Motors in any which way. The asking price is simply inconsequential.

I agree with you on the fact that the nano has been discontinued and that tata might not be willing to provide any support to the nano ev, but considering that the cheapest new ev we can get today is nothing less than Rs. 10 lakh, this car seems like a good value proposition strictly as a second or third car in the family meant for short runs in and around the city.

But who will fix the car if something goes wrong? Is Tata Motors or its dealers willing to fix the car? I can understand if the car in question is either mahindra verito or tata tigor taxi variants. You could be assured that dealers will atleast open a job card but this is a car developed by Jayam and never released to public!

Re: Rumour: Tata Nano could return in an electric avatar

Spotted two TATA Neo cars today afternoon on intermediate ring road, Bangalore, going towards Koramangala.
One was towing the other. Had green TS registration plates.
Could not click pictures as I was on my bike.
