Actually, quite a bit of routine out of town drives to Bangalore suburbs, Mysore and Kurnool-A.P for project visits. X5 30d has clocked close to 2,00,000 kms in last 8 years (less covid lockdowns, services & repairs halts). X5 40i is butter smooth and packed with thrills, clocked 3,000 kms in last one month including a drive to Hyd.

We've had distressing range anxiety issues taking the iX out of Bangalore with almost non existent EV charging network. In India we are eagerly waiting for Tesla launch for it to fill the void in Charging network more than it's cars .

You have 2 X5’s at home? This is super. Do share a pic whenever you can.

Wow. 2 Lakh Kms with a BMW X5 30d sounds like you are properly using the vehicle and is a testament for its reliability.

I assume you are in construction business and I know it needs a lot of travel (Have lot of friends in that line and mostly use Innova or Fortuner for this type of travel).

X5 40i is the B58 so it will be enjoyable for sure.

Btw, we added another BMW to our family (actually Sis’s family) and will share a few pics on my BMW thread. Do check that out.

I test drove the BMW iX 50i and honestly speaking it wasn’t that impressive.

It’s nowhere close to a Tesla. Not sure if you have seen that brief impression post :

You are right. Musk would take that approach- First build the charging network and then launch the car. I think it will be another 3-5 years before anyone can buy a Tesla made in India.

Just got that one pic of the two together.

2 Lakh kms on 30d was quite engaging but with a new short block (replaced under warranty) and a new gear box (the gear box was cracked by the broken shaft, replaced under insurance) - not quite that Toyota reliability though. Learnt that driving dynamics and reliability don't come as a package .

Yes we are into land development & constructions, like your pals, we ended up getting one Innova crysta midway - which has clocked 90 K kms now.

Agreed, the claimed range of iX is a joke on the highways without regen !

Spring is here and super excited that summer are on the way.

Time to spruce up some things on the home-front. Started with the front yard beautification process. Tesla did all the heavy lifting of transporting the mulch and chip stones from Home Depot.

With the seats down, I was able to carry 12 bags of Mulch and a few bags of chip stones in one-trip goes to show how spacious is the Model 3.

With the gas prices again jumping up, it forced me to look at these statistics and feel happy about it.

Gas here now in Seattle is $5.00/Gallon. And, our electricity is exactly opposite, it's just $0.08 per KWH. So, you can say we are living in other end of the spectrums.

Spent just $315 on electricity to drive 12,000 miles (~ 20,000 kms).

If it had been a gas car (E.g: BMW)- I would have needed 600 gallons of gas to cover 12,000 miles and at an average of $4.25/gallon, I would have spent $2550. These are massive savings.

I noticed this feature recently. Other day, wifey took the Tesla to work and I opened the app on my phone when she was driving. As you can see from below screenshots, app screen was in motion and showed "Real-Time" speeds as she kept driving.

This is a simply awesome feature to keep track of what speeds your car is being driven at.

Tesla has finally unveiled the new Tesla Model 3 Performance :

Some notable updates :

1. Front Lip Upgrade
2. Rear Diffuser
3. Seats are now bolstered
4. Adaptive Dampers
5. NVH improvement
6. New Wheel Design
7. Rear Seat Screen
8. V3 Version Track Performance Update (Don't know exactly what it means)

Finally, the most important aspect- acceleration shaved by 0.2 seconds and now it's even more blistering fast to 60mph at just 2.9 seconds.

Top speed decreased by 1mph to 163mph.

Range dropped from 315 miles to 295 miles.

Am I tempted to upgrade? Yes. Super tempted. Now with all these changes, it's now equal to an M3 competition (minus the engine...lol!)

Am I disappointed? Yes. I'm highly disappointed that I paid almost $15K more for my car and now comes a newer version that is cheaper.

Alright guys, Looks like I have to eat my own words. I spoke too quickly about EV tires lasting similar to ICE tires. I reckon, I am partly to be blamed as I never ever do any tire rotations and this practice has costed me heavily with my Tesla

Just on a whim, I paid a visit to Discount Store to check if they will do “FREE” rotation for my Tesla. First, they check the tires with a nice device which they put “behind” the tire to get the tread life.

While the treads look good from outside, the results kind of shocked me as it came back with these numbers

My car has now done 17,000 miles (27,000kms) in 18-months.

What it means is FL has 50% life, FR has 60% life, RR and RL has just 30% of life left.

Living in a land of rules does not help, Discount Tire do offer free rotations but, they refused to do it for tires at current tread level-3/32th tread wear.

Here is an explanation of the tread wear. When the car comes out of the factory it’s at 10/32.

They recommend that I replace them with new tires at the earliest as the rolling resistance and stopping distance will decrease. I test them and see the car stop pretty good both with REGEN and with BRAKES for now.

Looks like my hard accelerations and Red Light Drag racing has costed me dearly. But, heck being a positive person, I turned this situation into a positive one. While I have come to term that I need to replace them soon (Maybe in another 1k-2K miles) so until then the car will remain in “SPORTS” mode and will now increase those heavy acceleration runs so I can run the tires to ground.

When the time come for replacement which is around the corner, I have shortlisted these two tires :

1. Hankook Ventus S1 All Seasons
2. Continental Extreme Contact DSW+06

Hankooks are EV rated tires and very popular too and suggested by many on Tesla Forums. What does EV rated tires mean???

It means is they typically have stronger sidewalls to help with the weight of the battery shifting when turning, putting more stress on the sidewalls. Also, many have foam on the inside for lessening road noise.

Continentals are slightly more expensive and are not EV rated but, on its own they are one of the highest rated Performance All Season Tires.

Have this dilemma to wade through in the next few weeks. Any inputs from learned members or EV owners would be appreciated.

Perhaps, you could do a Cross(X) rotation of the tyres to bring the better ones to the front and run them till you change? From the numbers it looks that the rear have worn faster than the front. So this X pattern rotation might give you more life from the remaining tread!

I am sure there will be other shops who will do the rotation for a fee!

A couple of things. Highly recommend getting a second opinion or checking the tread depth yourself. I've had my Tesla M3 AWD checked at America's Tire (Discount Tire in California) and their fancy gizmo was about 2/32" off the actual reading (operator error?)

To your point about tires wearing out faster, I've had to change the tires on an AWD Model 3 after about 34000 miles. This was after regular tire rotations every 6000 miles or so.
The tires definitely didn't last me as long as a set of summer tires that I had on my Mazda RX8 which did about 40000 miles before needing to be changed.

Would also recommend looking into the Pirelli PZero Elect if you're looking at All seasons. I'm using them on my Model 3 and they have about 14000 miles on them and seem to be wearing pretty well. They are definitely much quieter and better handling than the stock Michelin MXMs. Slight hit on efficiency but nothing material.

Tire Rotations are usually done in the X-format only. (i.e) Rear Left goes on Front Right and Rear Right goes in Front Left.

I did think about this option of going to a smaller tire outlet and get them rotated but, generally here folks are careful and don’t take the risk of doing this at lower tread levels and might get denied again.

I decided to take this opportunity to change the tires soon and next time onwards be little more careful and do tire rotations for the Tesla judiciously every 6K-7K miles.

Let me for now continue my acceleration runs and burn more rubber.

I didn’t mention but, have already done it. I went to two different Discount Tire outlets and the results were same. Not sure if I go to a different one (e.g Costco), if the results would be any different.

My expectations were simple- 30,000 miles from a tire. And, this tire didn’t meet that expectation unlike my BMW. I'm thankful that there were no other issues with the tire except the overall low life of the tires.

Lessons learnt and will do tire rotations diligently here on.

Thanks for the recommendation. Never heard about the Elect. Will do some research on same. I’m sure any tire would be better than my current OEM (Pirelli P Zero Summer Performance which is designed for high performance) as All Seasons will be any day better than a summer which is designed more for track or high speeds with low life.

Where do you live? Because here we get lot of rains so I need a tire that has good rating for rain traction.

I have had good experiences with the DWS-06+ only my Alfa. It handles the wet/cold and warm Seattle weather just fine. The tread depth on mine after 12k miles is around 5-6mm in the rear, 8ish in the front.

If you want a more sporty tire, try the Pilot Sport All Season 4.

I'm in sunny California in the SF Bay Area, so I dont have to deal with as much rain as you do up north in the PNW.
That said, we did drive it up to Tahoe over the winter a few times during a snow storm or two and the tires handled fine without the need for additional traction devices in R1 conditions.

50% life in 12K miles means you are driving hard. Is that a Guilia quadrafoglio?

I know a friend with BMW X3M40i here has them and is happy too.

Have recently changed my BMW tires to Pilot Sport All Season 4 and I know they are awesome. They are rather expensive so was looking for cheaper but, good AS Performance tires.

Ah Ok! Yup, here we get lot of rain, plenty of twisty roads and snow too. It makes a lot of difference in what tires we choose.

Yes, it’s a Quad. You should have gotten the Conti’s on the X3 and the PS A/S4 on the Tesla to better suit the dynamics of both cars. Still try and find a deal on the PS A/S 4.
