The fully electric Volvo EX30 SUV: a small car with big potential

Sometimes, first impressions can be misleading. Yes, the new Volvo EX30 is our smallest SUV to date. And yes, it comes at an attractive price. But it can have an oversized impact, representing one of our biggest business opportunities in the coming years.

The Volvo EX30, available to order now in selected markets*, is a cornerstone of the strategic transformation we are on as a company. Already by mid-decade, we aim for half of our global sales volumes to consist of fully electric cars and to reach an operating profit margin of 8-10 per cent. By 2030, we plan to sell only fully electric models.

We expect the EX30 to be one of our best-selling models in coming years as we work towards those ambitions, and it will significantly contribute to our growth and profitability objectives.

With the Volvo EX30, we enter a new and fast-growing segment for our brand. There is a growing demand from consumers globally for small, fully electric premium SUVs. For example, many people living in the city are looking for a car that brings convenience and allows them to commute to work and get around, while doing so in a way that reflects who they are.

The EX30 is also designed to be as safe as you’d expect from a Volvo car and aims to look after both you and others in hectic urban environments. For example, it includes a special safety feature for bikes that helps to prevent so-called ‘dooring’ accidents, by alerting you when you are about to open your door in front of a cyclist, scooter or runner. State-of-the-art protective safety tech further illustrates how we’ve applied our high safety standards to the EX30.

The EX30 provides drivers with a true and capable SUV, born electric and packed with all the smart tech that they need. Combined with an attractive starting price of around EUR 36,000, this means customers get a premium fully electric SUV for a similar price to combustion engine-powered equivalents.

And as if that wasn’t enough, data from our initial analysis in two markets shows the total cost of ownership to be currently lower than any other fully electric Volvo car – and well ahead of much of the competition in the electric, small SUV segment*.


The Volvo EX30 is available for order as of today across Europe and other selected markets. In the United States, customers can place pre-orders, while orderbooks will open in other markets at a later stage that will be communicated in due course.

272 or 428 horsepower, two battery sizes

In its entry-level "Single" version, the EX30 uses the same rear electric motor as the Smart #1 with its 272 horsepower. It then connects to a battery with a capacity of 51 kWh, a combination that makes it possible to shoot down the 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and reach "up to 344 km of maximum range" in the WLTP cycle, a value lower than the 400 km of Stellantis' urban electric SUVs.
The "Single Extended Range" version increases the battery capacity to 69 kWh. The power remains at 272 horsepower but the 0 to 100 km / h drops to 5.3 seconds and the autonomy climbs to 480 km in maximum value. The "Twin Performance" variant, finally, combines these large batteries with a dual engine of 428 horsepower (that of the Smart #1 Brabus) to arrive at a 0 to 100 km/h shipped in 3.6 seconds and a maximum range of 460 km. On the charging side, the "Single" version accepts a power of 11 kW in alternating current and 135 kW in direct current. With large batteries, the AC charging capacity rises to 22 kW and the DC to 155 kW. Theoretically enough to go from 10 to 80% charge in 26.5 minutes.

From 37 500€:

The EX30 plays the "affordable" models in its basic Single version with a first price at € 37,500 which beats the Smart #1 and its € 39,990, but the Swede then has smaller batteries. The model with large batteries starts at € 41,700 and the Twin Performance version at € 49,250.

Volvo design is just getting better and better, and all that without going overboard. Kudos to the Volvo engineering and design teams.

Good looking and futuristic. Not a fan of the way the speedo and all essential buttons including the hazard lights have been integrated into the touchscreen. Doing anything, even rolling the rear windows up/down in this car requires taking your eyes off the road, and looking at the capacitive buttons which have to be toggled on/off.

Touchscreens are not as intuitive as buttons unless you are looking straight at it and they really should only be used for media and other non-essential items.

Good to see a smaller EV option. I know crossovers are where the market is moving so this is a smart move on Volvo's part, but wish they'd bring back the C series and have an EV hatchback because at least in the European context, for the target demographic, I do think a hatchback is all you really need.
I guess the pricing is par for the course for such crossover EVs, it's not too far off the price of something like the VW iD4 so I guess that's reasonable.
Would be nice if they brought it to India and kept it around the 45L mark max (wishful thinking I know).

Also fully agreed with above commenters on the all touchscreen approach, I think this maximalist approach is user hostile for everyday use.

Stunning looks, fab interiors, rather squeezed rear seat space, typical European habit, and that safety disaster the touch screen. How can Volvo, the paragon of safety contemplate such a move. I consider any control which needs taking your eyes off the screen as a safety violation. Tactile controls are compliant with that need, touch screens are not. Not sure why a simple matter like this proven time and again in aircraft controls is missed by auto designers.

Available to order since June 7, 2023, this second 100% electric SUV signed Volvo is conquering a market hitherto deserted by the brand. Its call price of € 37,500, obtained in particular thanks to a manufacturing relocated to China, is the sign of an offensive approach, even if the Single Extended Range version (from € 41,700) is likely to represent the bulk of its sales. This newcomer is distinguished by its compactness (4.23 m long), its powerful engines and an already rich range for its launch scheduled for early 2024.

The first is rear-wheel drive, while the second has semi-permanent all-wheel drive thanks to the addition of an electric motor on the front axle. This version, called Twin Performance, boasts the 0 to 100 km/h in only 3.6 s, the best time at Volvo on this exercise.

The EX30 offers two different batteries to choose from. The smallest, lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) technology, has a nominal capacity of 51 kWh (49 kWh useful), while the second uses nickel, manganese and cobalt (NMC) to provide 69 kWh (64.9 kWh useful).
Both are able to go from 10 to 80% in less than 30 minutes at a fast charging station thanks to a charging power of 155 kW in direct current. The range is between 344 and 480 km in WLTP cycle depending on the battery chosen.

By combining these powertrains and batteries, Volvo has created three versions:

"Single" with 272 hp engine and 51 kWh battery for a range of 344 km;
"Single Extended Range" equipped with the 272 hp engine and 69 kWh battery for a range of 480 km;
"Twin Performance" featuring the two engines with a total power of 428 hp and the 69 kWh battery for a range of 460 km.

Three finishes and four interior themes are also on the program to customize this Volvo EX30, whose Single and Single Extended Range versions are eligible for the eco-bonus of € 5,000 (for individuals) with their prices starting at € 37,500 and € 41,700 respectively. Note that a "Cross Country" version, with a more adventurous spirit, will be launched in a second time during 2024
