Jeep has unveiled its new retro-styled EV concept, the CJ Surge, at this year's SEMA show in the USA.

The new Jeep CJ Surge concept SUV's design is inspired by the brand's CJ-Series from the 1980s while featuring a modern fully-electric drivetrain underneath.



The EV concept comes in the form of a doorless two-seater off-roader, significantly modified by Mopar components. The concept makes use of the retro Copper Canyon Orange with black accents all around. The off-roader also features Surf Blue graphics on the body and Matte Black 18-inch alloys that signify it is an EV.



The CJ Surge Concept SUV comes with a two-inch lift kit and runs on 35-inch all-terrain tyres. Other features on the CJ Surge include a two-inch thick windscreen, a winch, underbody protection, LED fog lights, Houndstooth seat accents, a bespoke steering wheel and a gauge on the instrument cluster specifying the battery charge left.



Jeep states that the CJ Surge off-roader concept is powered by a scalable 400-volt battery placed in a custom-built shell at the back. An electric motor producing 270 BHP provides power to all four wheels via a selectable 2-speed Jeep transfer case.



The CJ Surge has been built using Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) and can be replicated on any CJ model, depending on the parts availability. The CJ Surge showcased at SEMA is currently a one-off resto-mod EV concept based on the standard petrol-powered CJ-7. Jeep is yet to confirm whether it plans any more of such factory-EV conversions of existing older off-roader SUVs.

A great way to breathe life into this timeless classic. I'm sure the popularity of the Roxor, or atleast the comments on the youtube videos where Americans are longing for such a nofrills 4x4 must've pushed Jeep to do this. Definitely an idea that's can show the path to replication across the globe for other such products.

The autorikshaws that have been retrofitted to become EVs in India always got me thinking on why not something like this for the thousands of old but roadworthy icons. Yes, they wont be ICE anymore but will surely be enjoyed for another generation more.

This proves why the original CJ5 shape is timeless. It evokes the classic JEEP style which is etched from the early days. Modern day Wranglers and Thars are no match.
