A Close Look | Jet Editions of the Tata Safari, Harrier, Nexon & Nexon EV

A Close Look | Jet Editions of the Tata Safari, Harrier, Nexon & Nexon EV-dsc02509.jpg

Introduction

As a part of Tata's strategy to keep its products fresh in the market, they've launched another special edition range of the Safari, Harrier, Nexon and the Nexon EV called the "Jet edition". It is said to be inspired by 'Business Jets' and features cosmetic changes to the outside and the inside of these cars. Tata Motors is really pushing it with the new Jet Edition being the 5th special edition range following the Adventure Persona, Dark, Kaziranga and Gold Editions.

There are no mechanical changes to any of the models. The cars feature dual tone ‘STARLIGHT’ exterior colour i.e. Earthy Bronze with Platinum Silver Roof. You also get '#JET' badges on the fenders and black alloy wheels. Inside, you have a dual-tone Oyster White and Granite Black theme with Bronze accents.

The #JET edition (ridiculous name IMO) is available on XZ+ (P) / XZA+ (P) in both diesel and petrol versions in the Nexon ICE; XZ+ / XZA+ in Harrier and XZ+ / XZA+ (6 Seater & 7 Seater) trims of the Safari and XZ+ LUX trim of Nexon EV Max and Nexon EV Prime.

Tata Safari

The Jet edition of the Safari diesel manual XZ+ is priced at Rs 21.35 lakhs for the 7-seater variant & Rs 21.45 lakhs for the 6-seater variant. The automatics are priced at Rs 22.65 lakhs (7-seater) & Rs 22.75 lakhs (6-seater). The difference between the Jet edition and the standard car is about Rs 30,000. It's priced similarly to the Dark, Adventure and Kaziranga editions. The Gold edition is about Rs 81,000 more expensive than the Jet edition. Tata has also added a few features to the ESP like driver doze-off alert, after impact braking and panic brake alert.

You can download the Tata Safari brochure here: Safari Brochure.pdf

Up front, you have the piano black grille with the chrome humanity line:

Changes to the side are the 'Jet Black' alloy wheels and body-coloured door handle inserts:

Not much difference at the rear:

Tata Harrier

The Harrier Jet edition with manual transmission is priced at Rs 20.90 lakh and the automatic variant is priced at Rs 22.20 lakh. It's priced at about Rs 30,000 more than the standard XZ+ dual tone variant and for that amount you get quite a few features. Most importantly, you get all-wheel disc brakes and additional ESP features like in the Safari mentioned above (driver doze-off alert, after impact braking and panic brake alert).

Tata Nexon EV

The Jet edition is offered on 'XZ+ LUX' trim of Nexon EV Max (40.5 kWh) and Nexon EV Prime (30.2 kWh). Prices for the Jet edition of the Nexon EV haven't been revealed yet.

You can download the Tata Nexon EV Max brochure here: Nexon EV Max Brochure.pdf

There's nothing that differentiates the Jet edition Nexon EV distinctly from the standard IC engine variants. No blue accents or anything, except for the EV badge on the grille:

Even at the rear, the only differentiators are the 'Ziptron' and 'EV' badges:

Re: A Close Look | Jet Editions of the Tata Safari, Harrier, Nexon & Nexon EV

It is a minor update, but they are all usable features. More than the JET edition colorchanges, what interests me is the possibility of all these trickling down to normal variants or at least dark editions. At the very least Tata motors has learned product life cycle management now. Even if minor, they keep updating their products so that it stays relevant in the market.

How I wish Storme and Hexa had received such treatment back in the day. All they needed was proper infotainment and some features like these.

Better than the 2022 facelift circus of the MG Gloster.

Tata indeed has learnt the art of updating. But they remove several features too. Don't remember exactly (minor but usable ones), but when we test drive a Nexon in 2019 the SA pointed us some of the features in the demo car are not available anymore.

Ditto is with Mahindra. We did a Thar test drive last week; the car came with dual tone bumpers, 2 front USB ports. These are not available in the production version anymore.

The biggest miss on the Jet Editions is a larger and newer touchscreen and 360 degree cameras on atleast the Safari & Harrier twins .

A Close Look | Jet Editions of the Tata Safari, Harrier, Nexon & Nexon EV-303764876_305418868467656_7895968411029381895_n.jpg

Re: A Close Look | Jet Editions of the Tata Safari, Harrier, Nexon & Nexon EV

It’s good to see Tata Motors continuously add features every few months which eventually trickle down to the regular top-end versions.

Had made this observation back in Feb 2022:
Quote:
It's quite interesting to note that Tata has 5 different colours of leather upholstery and 6 variations just for the front seats of the Harrier/Safari

Harrier:
- Benecke Kaliko Oak Brown

Safari:
- Benecke Kaliko Oyster White
- Diamond-Quilted Benecke Kaliko Oyster White
- Benecke Kaliko Earthy Brown

Common to Both:
- Benecke Kaliko Dual-tone Earthy Beige and Granite Black with Rhino Mascot
- Benecke Kaliko Blackstone with Deep Blue Tri-arrow perforations
With this #Jet Edition there are 5 colours and 7 variations. Latest being: 'Benecke-Kaliko Oyster White' leatherette with tri-arrow perforations and Bronze Deco stitching with '#JET' embroidery on the headrests.

Having seen the manufacturing line from close, it’s a maze to identify which variant is which from the door trim colour, to dashboard colour, to door handle colour before the entire car is assembled. So kudos to Tata Motors to pull off so many colours and variations…

Am I personally a fan of the #Jet Edition? NO.

But like other such editions the additional features do trickle down to the regular top-end versions. The biggest benefiter is the Harrier!

Rear-disc brakes and EPB with auto-hold is a big upgrade. I had TD’ed the Harrier MT back in June 22’ and the biggest sore point apart from the weird clutch was the manual handbrake, it felt very unnatural to operate!

Re: A Close Look | Jet Editions of the Tata Safari, Harrier, Nexon & Nexon EV

First the dark, kaziranga and then the jet edition, Tata motors is absolutely doing a commendable job by adding new features every now and then, thus keeping all its products updated. In fact this is one of the reasons why Tata motors is in the top 3 manufacturers list.

Though Tata could have used this opportunity to update the infotainment system (competitors got much more superior systems with big screen sizes), especially in the nexon which kind of looks dated now.

I think only Harrier received significant feature additions.
Rest all cars received is cosmetic changes i.e. new colors inside out.
Would love to see the car in person.

Hope I will like it like previous special editions.

I wish these editions were not locked to a particular body colour. Also, I hope this was not the "facelift" that was in the news cause as many others said, there needs to be more significant changes to these cars.

Re: A Close Look | Jet Editions of the Tata Safari, Harrier, Nexon & Nexon EV

What does the (P) next to Nexon mean ?

I like the additions to the Harrier - very sensible ones and worth the premium. Good to see such functional updates in vehicles than mere stickers editions. That upholstery is going to be a NIGHTMARE!! My grey seats in Fiesta used to soil at the washing centre right after cleaning and this is going to be a serious problem.

Waiting to see these features trickling down to regular variants.

Re: A Close Look | Jet Editions of the Tata Safari, Harrier, Nexon & Nexon EV

I am totally against these minor additions every few months or so.
Yes you are doing it to stay relevant in the market. What about the people who have bought the car? The latest set of buyers would regret their purchase. When you are spending 20+L on a car a mere 10k or 20k upgrade to useful features is a no-brainer. If I had bought the Harrier Kaziranga edition and seen this I would have regretted my purchase. There should be a clear and transparent update schedule so that people can plan accordingly.
Example, the new iPhone comes out in September every year and accordingly people start making their minds for the new model or get the discounted outgoing model.

If I buy the Harrier Jet edition, who knows by December end or so they would release a new edition fixing the infotainment system. Then what !

Re: A Close Look | Jet Editions of the Tata Safari, Harrier, Nexon & Nexon EV

While the updates are great in their own right, I feel disappointed that Tata has not yet thought of adding an AWD update/option to their line up.
These are all SUVs (sort of) but all without that essential bit that complete the SUV owner's feel-good factor. I had felt that with Mahindra's launch of the BS6 Thar and XUV700 (both runaway hits at launch time) Tata would get the point and offer - at least as an option - an AWD feature.

In this regard, the Nexon EV stands out, considering the reduced mechanical complexity of the driveline/transmission in EVs. And since the EV commands a decent premium over the ICE-driven Nexon, adding an AWD option would, I felt, have added a feather to Tata's cap.
