Tesla Model Y on track to become world's best-selling car: Will beat Toyota Corolla sales in 2023

According to a media report, Tesla has announced that its Model Y is on track to become the world's best-selling car in 2023.

Reports state that the Tesla Model Y will become the world's highest-selling car by revenue this year while becoming the best-selling car by volume in 2023. The Model Y is already the best-selling electric car in the world. However, Tesla expects sales to increase further once production at its Gigafactories in Texas and Berlin is ramped-up to full capacity.

Currently, the title of the world's highest-selling vehicle is held by the Toyota Corolla. The sedan from the Japanese carmaker managed to sell around 11,50,000 units globally last year. In comparison, Tesla as a whole managed 9,36,222 units of sales in 2021. However, the American EV maker is on track to register over 1.3 million car sales in 2022. With the planned increase in production, the EV maker could see it's Model Y sales numbers overtake that of the Corolla and take the world's best-selling car title.

The Tesla Model Y was introduced in 2020. Company CEO Elon Musk had then predicted that the Model Y would become the world's best-selling car with an annual demand ranging between 5 lakh to 10 lakh vehicles. Two years later, the prediction seems to be on track, with Tesla expected to be able to manufacture a million Model Y units annually by the end of the year.

Re: Tesla Model Y on track to become world's best-selling car: Will beat Toyota Corolla sales in 202

While I certainly commend Tesla for designing a very competent product that has attracted such attention from the consumers, I would be a bit cautious of statements such as these, which try to disguise a forecast as a certainty.

Statements like this, especially when made in the context of a shareholder meeting, tend to be over-optimistic by design, and discount the possibility of several factors such as increasing competition, supply chain issues and the weakening global economic situation. Most importantly, however, in this case, they are based on projections of manufacturing which, as Tesla should know better than anyone, are easier said than done.

Nonetheless, fact is that the company has managed to get their strategy on point, and is likely to get there eventually - an incredible feat considering the segment and price-point they operate in, as well as the fact that they are not one of the legacy OEMs. If the Model Y 'will beat Toyota Corolla in 2023' is something I would take with a generous dollop of salt.

Tesla Model Y was the world's best-selling car in Q1 2023.

Quote:
for 53 markets worldwide, plus information for other key markets and estimates for others, indicate that the Tesla Model Y was the world's best-selling car in the first quarter of this year

Quote:
Data collected for the first quarter shows the Tesla Model Y in the lead with 267,200 units sold. That's an increase of approximately 69 percent from the same period last year. The Model Y performed strongly in China, its core market, in the United States where it's up 68 percent, and in Europe, where it became the top-selling vehicle.

The Toyota Corolla is less despite sales figures including all available body types: sedan, wagon, and hatchback. The Corolla, which has been one of the most popular cars in the world for years, recorded downward-trending sales of 256,400 units. That includes a 29 percent drop in China and a 10 percent decline in the United States.

The current generation of the Corolla was presented in March 2018, while the Tesla Model Y debuted a year later in March 2019. The gap between the two is not that great, which means that anything can happen by the end of the year.
Quote:
the Corolla has the advantage of being a truly global product, being available in almost every country in the world. This makes it less vulnerable to any geopolitical clashes between China and the United States, for example.

The top 5 are filled out by three other Toyotas: Hilux, RAV4, and Camry. Both the RAV4 and Camry are designed for developed markets, while the Hilux continues to be the top choice in emerging economies. Presence in these markets, which account for a fifth of global vehicle sales, is the missing part of Tesla's expansion.

Tesla Model Y is the best-selling car in the world!

Nope, not a petrol, not a hybrid and NO, not a Corolla. The best selling car in the world for Q1 2023 is a pure EV, the Tesla Model Y

Quote:
Tesla Model Y was the best-selling car worldwide in the first quarter 2023.

The premium midsize SUV beat the Toyota Corolla for the title with 267,171 Model Ys sold in the first quarter. The Tesla Model Y outsold the Toyota Corolla in Q1, despite being almost double the price.

Tesla (TSLA) scored a huge milestone in the first quarter amid its crusade to ramp up global EV adoption — producing the best-selling car in the world.

A new report from data firm JATO Dynamics, along with automotive site Motor.1.com, found the Tesla Model Y was the No. 1 selling vehicle globally in the first quarter of the year, marking the first time an EV was the top-selling vehicle.

JATO said Tesla sold 267,200 Model Ys in Q1, up 69% from a year ago. The second-best-selling car was Toyota’s Corolla, with 256,400 vehicles sold globally. JATO’s data spanned 53 international markets, plus data and forecasts for 31 other markets and estimates for the balance of global markets.

For Tesla, it could be the beginning of a new sales trend for the Model Y, which might see it being the global leader in sales for 2023.

Musk has previously predicted that the Model Y would claim the top spot, telling investors in 2021: “We think Model Y will be the best selling car or vehicle of any kind in the world. Probably next year. I’m not 100 percent certain next year, but I think it’s quite likely... more likely than not, that 2022 Model Y is best selling car or truck... in the world.”

It didn’t achieve that goal, but it did place third in the overall global rankings for 2022, breaking into sixth place on America’s list of the top 10 bestselling cars, despite fierce competition from trucks and full-size SUVs. Last year, it also became the bestselling vehicle in both Europe and California and the fourth bestselling in China after jumping 15 places from the previous year. And that’s despite China’s crackdown on Tesla ownership and various recalls over safety concerns.

5 of the 10 best-selling electric cars in the world are from BYD. VW not in the list.

Eight of the 10 best-selling models are of Chinese origin, with BYD being the most prominent brand with five models on the list

Quote:
Analyzing the accumulated data from January to May 2023, it is observed that pure electric cars managed to reach the impressive figure of 3.26 million units, representing 10% of total sales in that period.

Plug-in hybrids, meanwhile, reached 1.3 million units, equivalent to 4% of the sales share. Together, these two technologies accounted for 14% of total car registrations, with an annual growth of 41%.
Quote:
When it comes to the best-selling models in May, the Tesla Model Y took the top spot with more than 90,000 registrations. What stands out, however, is the dominance of Chinese manufacturers on the list.

The BYD Qin Plus (with BEV and PHEV versions) ranked second with 42,895 units, followed by the Tesla Model 3 with 38,453 units. The BYD Song Plus family (BEV and PHEV) also performed remarkably with 38,056 units sold

Tesla Model Y is the World's best-selling vehicle for 2023.

But Toyota isn't far behind with the RAV4 and Corolla.
