MG plans to ramp up its manufacturing capacity from 75,000 to 1,20,000 units per annum in 2023 and has earmarked an investment of Rs. 2,000 crore for the same.

Currently, the brand offers the ZS EV in India. The electric SUV is priced from Rs. 21.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The carmaker also plans to introduce a second EV in the first quarter of the next year. It is expected to be positioned below the ZS EV.

According to the company, the fresh investment will also be used to improve the localization of the two EVs, which should bring down the prices.

That's a bold statement from MG and a call for war imo.
I think they and the TATA's will lead the EV race from the front till Maruti Suzuki/Hyundai enters the race more seriously.

Time for Mahindra to stop the wait and watch tactic.

Coincidentally, the news came out the same day I was watching this :-

The chinese manufacturers are best poised to dominate the EV market as many mainstream manufacturers are still busy planning their EV portfolio, doing low volume launches or simply kicking the can down the road.

The ones that do come out with EVs are simply pricing themselves out of the high volume segments, inorder to ensure their ICE models aren't impacted.

In India Maruti is 3-4 years behind the race, M&M has given up, Hyundai is planning a few premium launches..... if Tata doesn't up it's EV game, the Indian market is an open goal post for MG.

MG To Offer A Two-Door EV In Early 2023.

MG India: EVs could account for 25% of total sales in 2023-1.jpg

Quote:
As per the reports, this two-door electric vehicle would be a super small four-seater EV designed for local commute and would be called the MG E230. It is being developed to be sold globally, but would also find a place in the Indian Morris Garages EV portfolio.
Quote:
the brand has high aspirations with the E230 and would ensure for this EV to fall under the Rs. 10 lakh segment so as to top the sales volume figures. This EV would be based on SAIC - GM - Wuling's Global Small Electric Vehicle (GSEV) architecture platform which is robust enough and is currently in use in plenty of vehicles like the Baojun E100, E200, E300, E300 Plus and the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV which is one of the derivates for the Chinese markets.
Quote:
The MG E230 is suspected to retain the boxy design language of the vehicles based on the same platform, and thus is likely to be dimensionally smaller than the Datsun Redi - GO and Maruti Suzuki Alto, but would be featuring a longer wheelbase when compared to the Chinese derivate. This cute little two-door EV is expected to be powered by a 20 kW motor coupled with a 20 kWh battery and a driving range of 150 km.

My two paisa view is, while the price and the proposed range seems quite exciting, the two door version may not have many takers in India.

While the EV could be functional, the two door configuration may not appeal to psychological and emotional needs of Indian consumers in that price segment.

I hope I am proven wrong!
