Sony, Honda team up to develop and sell electric vehicles

Japan's Sony Corp and Honda Motor Co Ltd said on Friday they would pair up to develop and sell battery-powered electric vehicles, as the electronics maker furthers its ambitions to become a key player in next-generation automobiles.

The two companies said in a statement they would form a joint venture this year and aim to begin selling the first model in 2025.

Japanese giants Honda Motor Co. Ltd and Sony Corp. have announced that they will join hands to develop and sell battery-electric vehicles. Both companies recently held a joint conference stating that they will start a joint venture this year. They aim to launch their first electric car in 2025.



As per reports, Honda and Sony will design, develop and sell electric cars under the new joint venture. However, Honda will be responsible for manufacturing the vehicle at its own plant. On the other hand, Sony will develop the 'mobility service' platform for the car.

Kenichiro Yoshida, CEO of Sony had previously announced that they plan to create a new company, called Sony Mobility, to explore the commercial launch of electric vehicles. The tech giant also unveiled its Vision-S02 concept earlier this year.

Honda has also been working towards electrifying its lineup. The carmaker has already announced a shift to becoming an EV-only brand by 2040.

Great news from great companies.

One from automobile world and one from computing world pouring the experience and legendary knowledge. Looking forward for great products from this venture both on auto, tech and most importantly the usability of future mobility.

These days car (and electronics too) companies have identified releasing some or the other random news bytes is a very cheap way of staying in the minds of people. The 24 hr news portals just lap up literally any tidbit these car companies will put out, never mind the fact that most of these news pieces are totally pointless.

For example, completely EV by 2040. Nearly every company has claimed something in the same vein, and who is going to hold them to it? Its far enough into the future that the regulations will force them into it anyways. they are not the ones who are willingly doing it.

Rants aside, yet another fluff piece, pointless in objective, with no tangible information.

Sony And Honda Confirm Joint Venture Called Sony Honda Mobility Inc

The first EV born from this collaboration will debut in 2025 along with a mobility service.

The two companies will each own 50 percent of the joint venture, although their contribution to the project will be quite different.

Sony knows nothing about making cars, but it has decades of experience in tech and entertainment and in an era when driving is becoming increasingly automated, the need to keep passengers entertained will be increased.

The tech giant stayed tight-lipped until today, in spite of the fact that it showed off two electric vehicle concepts that seemed like they could go into production tomorrow.
We don’t actually know if either of the two Vision-S models will actually make it into production, since they were not created by or with input from Honda, but Austria’s Magna Steyr instead.

The Japanese automaker is also working with General Motors, which granted use of its Ultium platform and battery technology, to launch its first electric crossover, the kind of vehicle that all manufacturers nowadays want to cash in on.

how far fetched it would be to consider that the Sony EV might end up being built by Honda, but on a GM platform.

since Honda doesn’t actually have its own EV platform and GM is providing it, what’s stopping it being used in a Sony EV?

Mobility is in the joint venture’s name and aside from selling vehicles, it will also offer some form of ride sharing or hailing services.

Good for Honda too as they were far too behind the curve for this.

Afeela "One" to be launched in 2026 in Japan in the U.S.





Sony announced at a press conference in CES2025 that it will unveil the AFEELA 1, the latest model of Sony Honda Mobility's AFEELA battery EV, and will start accepting reservations on its dedicated website after the press conference$89,900 and $102,900 for Signature.

However, this pre-order is limited to residents of California, and the area will be expanded sequentially. There is also a $200 deposit for reservations (refundable).

This is Lucid Air price-bracket. At first looks it seems to me that Lucid Air is better on all fronts- Tech and styling. I'm struggling to find the USP of the Afeela 1.
