Re: MG ZS EV | 5 Month Review

Visited MG today, and the salesman told me that the 6.5kw will come from a separate line and GREEN meter, as opposed to the 3kw charger- hence the former will work out cheaper in the long run despite an upfront 17k installation cost.
Has anyone done the math on the costs between the two options?

I do have a very specific doubt, few reviews point out that brake feel is probably the only issue with the overall driving experience, how has your experience been so far?

Thank you!

As I mentioned, we hardly use the brake pedal thanks to the regen function. One pedal driving is a-m-a-z-i-n-g! But even so, with discs on all 4 wheels, brakes are pretty good with sufficient stopping power.

As a ZS EV owner, I can assure you that the brakes are quite good. No issues at all.

Wow, that’s a big harassing story to read even. I completely sympathise with the owner.
Early days into EV adoption, companies need to be much much more supportive. And I was of the opinion of great customer service by MG, sigh

Update on the issue:

There was a discussion regarding the use of OBD2 reader such as OBDLink and an app to clear error codes. The information from MG UK forums is that it doesn't work every time and the car will need to be towed to the service station in such cases.

I’ve been wanting to buy a city car for a very long time. I finalised on the Kushaq and right when I wanted to pay the advance, the EPC issues came to light. Then I liked the Taigun and wanted to get the grey one. But it came with red interiors which is a big no for me personally. I wanted to compromise on the colour and get the white Kushaq/Taigun and now the rattling noises of the interiors has come up. I’ve given up on VAG. True VAG cars don’t have such petty issues.
Exactly! I'm completely baffled by the running costs of an EV. MG in its own website has declared that the average battery life in their current cars is 10 years which in reality will be 7-8 years.
In MG's own words in their UK website - https://www.mg.co.uk/electric-life/g...r-battery-life

A full battery replacement in 7-8 years will cost 8 lakh rupees(the inflation in 8 years and advancements in battery technology means the price will more or less remain the same).

Now lets assume a few things:
Car: MG ZS EV
Range: 300 - 320 km
Km's driven in a year: 10000 km / year

Running costs:
Service cost: Rs. 30000 for 8 years(negligible compared to ICE)
Cost of charging at home: (50 kWh * 6) = Rs. 300 for full charge (again, very negligible)

But the cost of replacing the battery in 8 years beats anything that could happen to an ICE engine in 8 years and costs 8 lakh rupees.

8 LAKH RUPEES FOR 8 YEARS. Hence....
Per Year:
BATTERY Replacement Cost - 1 lakh rupee
Km's driven - 10000 km
Effectively equates to 10 Rs./Km

Adding everything,
Per Km:
Battery replacement = Rs.10
Running cost = Rs.1
Miscellaneous cost = Rs.1

All this equates to Rs.12/km which is horrendously high for any vehicle. So all the talk about EV's saving money in the long run is nullified by the fact that the battery needs to be replaced every 8 years.

Or we can also interpret from the same MG website that the battery lasts for 20 years. If one uses the car for 50,000 kms every year, the batteries last for 10lakh kms.

Both your case and my case are extremes, the truth is in between. The batteries should last for more than 15 years(and 20 years with some range decrease) and 5 lakh kms.

Re: MG ZS EV | 5 Month Review

The last sentence of the article is and I'm quoting from the MG website "So, in answer to the question of how long do electric car batteries last, it is estimated that the batteries should last approximately 10 years." So an assumption of 7-8 years is not an extreme case like you said. Coming to your assumption that someone can drive 50000 km in a year, it just proves the fact that you have to recharge the battery (50000 / 300 km range) = 167 times in a year. And every time you discharge and recharge the battery, the life of the battery goes down and not remain the same.

How I arrived at 10000 km per year is purely based on my perspective of how much an office going person will drive in a day(approx 25-30 km) and the service interval of the car.

How I arrived at 7-8 years of battery life when MG claims and states 10 years. Well, they even claim the ZS EVs range is 461 km when in fact it is 300-320 km.

Attaching the image from their website:

The more relevant question is how they(MG) arrived at that figure of 10 years?
How many recharge cycles were assumed?
Will car manufacturers provide the latest and greatest technology available in 8 years when they replace the whole battery?

PS: I have nothing against MG. This just happens to be a thread on MG so I'm writing it here.
