Re: Scoop! Tata Sierra to return as an EV only

If I ever consider an electric car in India, this would be it. Brings back memories, if being able to sit in a Sierra - let alone own one.

Wow! Great to see the Seirra back. If they could do the flush sitting handles like the XUV700 for the rear door that will make it look cool and camaflouge the rear door.

Happy to see this from design perspective but with the more glass panels wouldnt it require more cooling aka more drain from battery?

Not if they engineer it well. Tesla's glass roof is well insulated for UV radiation and heat plus strong enough to take the weight of the car in case of a mishap.

Re: Scoop! Tata Sierra to return as an EV only

I believe Tata EVs should have different design language from rest of its fleet. They should stand apart in crowd. Great news to Sierra being considered in EV avatar. I hope it justifies the legend. Would love to see it as big as original with AWD. I think Tata should consider giving a 700-800km range in Sierra EV.

Re: Scoop! Tata Sierra to return as an EV only

While it is impressive in the dedicated EV platform front, Sierra, unlike all the other cars from tata, has the potential to be called a lifestyle vehicle that could compete against the Thar. Sierra has a stronger legacy than Thar. Like i had mentioned in some other thread, a 4x4 Sierra with the kryotec diesel from fiat in Harrier BS4 spec: 140bhp, 350Nm could make Thar run for its money. This is wasted opportunity.

You are talking about the same Tata who squandered away the more stronger Safari brand name?

They have abandoned the capable X2 platform, rather don't have any BoF platform in their PV division right now. So why would they bother. Am glad it is even coming back as an EV, thought they would have slapped the Sierra badge on the Creta rival Blackbird and called it a day.

And being a born BEV, it would be much easier to integrate an AWD system.

Re: Scoop! Tata Sierra to return as an EV only

Just heard a rumour that Tata is going to revive Sierra as an EV, and soon as per the article from Gaadiwaadi website. It says the range will be 590kms.

It was simply an Article for April Fool Day

No Concrete information on Sierra as of now. Tata will be unveiling a New SUV on 6th April. It could be a New Sierra or a Nexon Coupe. Let's see.

Companies need to be more agile and dynamic and work with a sense of urgency. Tata may be ahead of others in EV sales but that's because others are not even trying. Tata revealed at the time of the Nexon EV launch that they will release 4 EVs in 2 years and already has shown Altroz EV at the auto expo in Feb 2020. It's has been 2 years since that and the only EV that has been launched or upgraded is the Tigor EV with a slightly bigger battery.

The only saving grace for the companies operating in India is tensions with China. That is the reason why companies like MG, BYD are skeptical about expansion in the Indian market. The EV models that Chinese companies have in their home market are world-class and price competitive. If they come to India, they will take over the Indian passenger car market in a few years just like they did the Indian smartphone market. They are already expanding in European markets and seeing decent success.

Here are some examples of Chinese models and their price points:

Hozon NETA Vpro (78,900 rmb = Rs 9.2 lakhs): Almost the same battery capacity (38.53 kWh) as Hyundai Kona.

Attachment 2255934
Attachment 2255935

BYD Dolphin: (11 lakhs for 30 kWh capacity same as Nexon. Rs 12 lakhs for 44.5 kWh battery same as MG ZS EV)

Attachment 2255932
Attachment 2255933

These are just some basic models at very good prices. There are tens of models from both startups like Xpeng, Nio, and established companies like SAIC, BYD, Geely, etc... in the Rs 15 to 30 lakhs price bracket.

Such prices are possible in India only when local manufacturing of components starts. That is the reason why the government is eager to push the EV ecosystem and chip manufacture. Imports carry high duty tariff. Now one may ask why the duty cannot be reduced. Such an action encourages massive imports from China benefiting Chinese industry. Further it will cause disruptions where imports of such cars may take priority over import of essentials like food etc. which resulted in forex crisis situation like in Sri Lanka, Pakistan etc. Such an action will also kill the domestic industry. So we need to wait for the entire ecosystem to get localized before we see price any rationalization.

Indian automobile manufacturers are competent. Look how they dominate the two wheeler industry. The only other player in the game is Honda. All others sell in small numbers. Also note that automobile industry contributes significantly to our exports. Then why did we fall behind in electric vehicles? That is because the industry needs policy support and direction. Only after the current government came to power, they nudged the industry towards electric. On the back end all industry players continuously do their R&D which may or may not see light of the day. For example TVS produced and patented a hydrogen driven two wheeler. And Tata is already working on Hydrogen tech.

Re: Scoop! Tata Sierra to return as an EV only

Cars are looking more and more mass-market and rubbish. They’re banking on the “legendary” name tag and sentimental value to pitch this.

Re: Scoop! Tata Sierra to return as an EV only

Does this concept has openable boot from the back? Or tata are yet to think of adding that during production to make it 5 door. And they haven't sorted on mechanism of how to provide the 5 door.

Edit: Longer video of the car from Autocar

What an awesome video.
  • There will be frunk
  • From inside there is plenty of space in back seat. But it seems like there is no boot.
  • There was no mention of openable tail gate. I was certainly looking for a boot. Will be looking for more clarity for sure.
  • I haven't sit in Sierra but the thought of owning one now give goosebumps.
  • Interior space seem to really well thought out.
