Mercedes-Benz has taken the wraps off its new concept car, called Project Maybach.



The luxury concept model features an off-road coupe theme and has been designed from the ground up by Mercedes-Maybach in collaboration with the late American fashion designer, Virgil Abloh. Project Maybach takes inspiration from the 'great outdoors' and is said to "exemplify the possibilities of future design".



Mercedes describes Project Maybach as a 6-metre long 2-seat battery-electric off-road coupe. The concept comes with Grand Tourer like proportions, combined with chunky off-road tyres. This is said to allow the car to go anywhere, while still retaining the Maybach levels of refinement.



The company though hasn't revealed the powertrain details of the Project Maybach concept.

I was on the road to recovery from the left uppercut dealt by the BMW XM when, lo behold, the Project Maybach.

Just thinking aloud, the BLINGY-NESS in automotive design seems connected to China's rise as a major automotive market. The chrome and glitz that comes with the "need to show" is so symptomatic of sudden prosperity.

Will the era of elegance, of the W-126 S-Class, the Typ-4D Audi A8 ever return? :(

With all those auxiliary lamps on the tubular and their reflection on the shiny exterior makes me think like "Concert stage on wheels".

Will cost more to fix than the land on which it'll offroad.

"Sir your front left bumper has minor scratches from the dry bushes on the trail sir. We can repaint but the paint we use has gold flakes and only one man is allowed to the paint the car so he will have to flydown from Goodwood. It will cost around about 3 Creta's and some Celerio as change."

The timing of the reveal is significant. Virgil Abloh passed away just three days ago after a battle with cardiac angiosarcoma, a rare form of cancer. He was 41 and the Art Director for Louis Vuitton and other brands under LVMH, the first person of color to hold that position. RIP.

First announced in October, Project Maybach is a true concept vehicle unlikely to ever go into production.

I highly doubt the dynamics are practical to be put into production.
Is it just me or does the car seem to be a bit too 'Rolls-Roycy' ?

I kinda like this car. I like the old school square-shaped style of the G - Wagon, coupled with monoblock rims. The lowered stance and shade of white make it look odd, but in a better color with the SUV stance, this would be a looker

There were polarised opinions on the Tesla Cybertruck. And now this has rolled out! I believe future of pick-up trucks is this general design layout. Happy to see a design shift from the G Wagon layout. Let's see what the future holds.

Style and more particularly in this case fashion, as we all know is deeply subjective. But as someone on the thread correctly pointed out, this was announced on the heels of Virgil Abloh's passing. Mercedes were simply releasing his last collaboration or 'collab' (in the vernacular of the music and arts community), on the back of the news of the death of a big name in the fashion industry.

I mean for context this is a guy Kanye tapped up to essentially co-lead on his own fashion forays. If you've ever seen Yeezys and anything of that ilk you'd know where these car designs were coming from. They're deeply unconventional. At the end of the day, the cynical take is the pragmatic one, it keeps the Maybach brand in the conversation for the parent group, be that as it may on the back of a significant public figure passing.
