Skoda plans to manufacture electric cars in India. However, the company is looking to bring in its first EV, the Enyaq, via the CBU route, prior to committing to local manufacturing.

According to Thomas Schaefer, CEO, Skoda Auto, India will be a key market for green vehicles. By the end of this decade, 30% of Skoda and Volkswagen's local portfolio would comprise of EVs. To achieve this, the company would have to focus on localization of parts and that would include setting up cell factories.

He added that the government should allow companies to test the market with global products and that can only be possible if import duties are reduced. Schaefer believes that EVs shouldn't be penalized until they are localized in India.

At present, Tata Motors is at the forefront of the EV race in India. The Nexon EV has been its best-selling model. MG, Hyundai and Mahindra also have plans to launch more affordable EVs in the future.

Seeing Enyaq reviews, it seems it would be a nice addition to the existing lineup. It will also solve the Skoda/VW group's DSG issues

Volkswagen and Skoda are looking to bring the ID.4 and Enyaq iV as full imports, possibly by next year.

It will take the CBU route and will have a premium positioning in the market, with mass-market models only expected to arrive much later.

Skoda Auto Volkswagen studying small car EV for India, considering an EV factory post 2025.

Skoda aims for a compact SUV, EV and new investments for India.

The Czech car brand is also looking to bring a small city-centric electric car to India that will be produced in India built using locally procured parts.

These new initiatives will be part of Volkswagen’s new investment cycle titled internally as India 2.5

To start with, Skoda will bring the Enyaq, an electric SUV, to India as a fully imported model. Though this model will be priced at a premium, it will be launched to test the waters, before the group plans to get more EVs to India but at a more affordable pricing.

Thomas Schaefer, chief executive of Skoda Auto: (who will take over as head of Volkswagen from April 1)

We need more models below the Enyaq; in the mass market. We are putting three more models below the Envaq. We are starting with Europe but if the demand picks up in India and there is any indication of it, then yes, we will bring them to India as well. There will be at least one small car based on the same platform. It will be slightly bigger than the ID Life concept showcased by VW. It could be the vehicle that could be used in India

Spotted an Enyaq iV with red plates charging at the public charger at MG's Goa showroom (very close to Skoda's) today. Couldn't get a photograph but it had metallic teal/turquoise-ish paint.
